Have you had a race that didn't go to plan? How did you get over it??

Man, so many. What I find that, the more passionate you are about running, the more often you will DNF actually. Especially if we talked about ultras. Why is that ? Cause it doesn't freckin' ever worth it just to finish and then not to run for 6 weeks. I prefer to drop out and make sure that in 3 days I am back on the daily runs. I love racing, mountains, running, community, but I do that so every day or twice and even 3 or 4 times a day. The other thing about this passion is aesthetics. Finishing fast and strong with a sharp and focused mindset is not the same as pulling a limping left limb over the finish-line, hunched forward with no presence or ending up in the ER tent on an IVdrip. I like grace and vibration !

Sure. Großglockner Ultra Trail being the last one, also in Austria, quite technical and partly high altitude. Did not have a chance to acclimatize to the altitude, also had shoe issues, and the nuitrition strategy failed me. 40k went excellent (meaning: too fast), at halftime at 60k I was almost done with headaches, bloody toenails a nervous stomach, and crawled the fruther 50k like a slug to the finish after half of the field passed me. Ran a 100 miler several months later that year and took revenge. Just sign up for the next race. There are days like that.

My first marathon didn't exactly go to plan regarding my target time, but i'm cracking on with a second attempt this summer using your marathon plan which gives me more focus and guidance. I don't dwell on it, just plan to get better each and every day. No pressure, they'll always be more races and more opportunities to tackle challenges.

Yes - usually on reflection because I had been over-training and not resting enough. I got over it by reminding myself rest is as much a part of training as running and if I let my body recover more it will be happier and quicker in the long run!

This video is arguably more important than anything you've put out already. So much of running online is about the PBs and not the DNFs or injuries etc. Nothing but realness, may the comeback be massive mate

@@BenParkes I think as a coach as well, clients you're going to be working with are going to be experiencing set backs all the time, I think this race is quite humanising in a sense and will only strengthen your ability to navigate other runners through difficult patches

God Ben. Thanks for the honesty. I dont feel so bad about my bad run last year now. I'm definitely not an ultra runner but I do an annual 5 to 15K over the past almost 20 years. And last year I tried another 15K that I was so stoked for, but my knee gave out 5.5 miles into the run and had to walk/jog the rest. Was so disappointed. But I'm over it now. Training for this years 3rd 15K at 60 years old. I'm running slower than previous years, but I dont care. Just want to go out and have fun! Even though it wasnt one of your better runs, I sure appreciate you bringing us along for the ride. The views are one of a kind and spectacular! Watching your videos is probably the closest I will ever get to even knowing these places exist. Thank you!!! You and Sarah are so inspiring to me.

She's so strong and great ! No race goes like its perfect plan ! I have three things that throw my races. If my foot collapses (usually the front part of my right foot). If I forget to fuel properly during the race. If my sleep before the race sucks. I think that your sleep before the race has lacked quality.

That looks like a stunning race, but equally tough. I appreciate the documenting of the journey, highs and lows. Still a fantastic effort

Is gonna be alright Ben, professional runners from Mexico recommend to respect the process. For instance, after a full marathon is necessary to take one week rest in order to recover from the heavy impact competition, So I guest that there are other periods to recover from different distances. Good luck!!!!

Hi Ben, well done to both of you. I was so curious on Sunday evening so I checked the the mozart 100 results and I couldn't find your name anywhere. I thought something happened and waited your video today. Still fantastic achievement and next year I'm sure these comments will encourage you to try once more.

Great Video Ben! Even though it didn't end how you expected, your video achieved something big. It was real and it had a good message to spread. Well done both of you! Great job Sarah! You should definitely start your own channel!

Great effort again! Enjoy the journey you're on with all its ups and downs, it'll only make you stronger the more you experience. And yes Sarah should start her own channel because you said it yourself, the sport needs more female role models.

Tough luck but we learn from when we are down. You made the right decision to pull the plug. Further up the mountain it would have become worse. On wards and up wards to the next race.
