For all the people who think this is too fast well it is not, this is the original tempo. Missae Breves means "Short Mass" So not only short in the whole mass but also in music.

+Gijs ziezi it is difficult to know the right tempo in Mozart's works. Apart from the Agnus Dei, I consider this version quite fast.

The reason why so many comments say "this is rushed" is that the recording has been sped up. Everything's a semitone higher because of that. It makes the choir sound like an enraged mob, and the trumpets like car horns. Try it out yourself, listen to the first bar and compare it to your piano or keyboard. It's in C#!

If you look at the score, the oboes were originally to play in D, while the rest of the performers were in C. This because it was performed in organ or church pitch. The tuning of insturments in the 18th century varied from place to place, but invariably the organ was tuned higher than chamber instruments. Since the usual chamber pitch was around a semitone lower than today, and the organ was a whole note higher than that, we have a semitone higher in modern tuning. It's complicated I know.

The whole recording is sped up, raising the pitch half a step. The Mass is now artificially in C#. Thank goodness this explains the hurried tempos, especially wild in the Benedictus at 8:12

Das Tempo der Aufnahme wurde technisch beschleunigt, deshalb auch die falsche Tonhöhe, nämlich Cis-Dur. Unabhängig davon ist die Aufnahme lebendig aber leider verhetzt. Das heißt im Klartext, die Phrasen schwingen nicht aus. Also gerne allegro, aber dann die Musik sprechen lassen und nicht nur Vollgas geben. (Mozart schrieb übrigens im Kyrie, um ein Beispiel zu nennen, Andante vor)!

It was beautifully sung, but I felt it was very rushed.... in fact, raced through. Like people who keep looking at their watch during the serviice because they have elsewhere to be ;-D This full mass is usually "brief/brevis" at 15:30-16:00 minutes. This version shaved off 2:30 minutes, at the least. My guess? There must have been strudel after mass for the choir ;-D

Reply to enilegnave21: Actually, you're not far wrong! Mozart wrote it for a mass which was on a day that was traditionally a holiday for the choir - so he wrote one that was fast and would not take too long, so the choir could get off and enjoy their party! So, the tempi are not too fast - they are what he intended!

Why is a 1/2 pitch higher than in the notes? Usually in baroque tuning it’s a half tone deeper 🤷🏼‍♀️
