This is how Lacrimosa should sound! The cry of humanity for her sins and destiny, the cry of a mother for her dead child, the cry of God for His creation. 7minutes of pure sadness. Now, the world may end.

Even with how overdone the Lacrimosa is, Bernstein is able to capture something very different from other interpretations I have heard. True beauty right there.
@cmelodynick9 ай бұрын
Bernstein has the skill, courage and experience to take this at such a tempo. The modern world has conditioned us to 'consume' food, drink, music, visits to art galleries, etc. at pace, and to really fail to savour the finer tastes, flavours and the details of the delicacies on offer. This rendition allows one to thoroughly appreciate the depth of emotion encapsulated in this piece, as well as Mozart's unparalleled skill. It may have been written for someone else, but it is truly Mozart's own requiem.

Incredible version. And best tempo. Bernstein was the best conductor for me. He could realy bring the best and the most emotional feelings out of any piece he touched. Genius musician and conductor. This tempo is crying out the greef and sadnes in this movement. And difficult and daring to do. Masterful. Mozart at his best compositionvise. *******

From 5:50 onwards, Bernstein's account grinds to a halt. An intersting version since the words are a plea for eternal rest. Also intriguing is that Bernstein never recorded this piece before, and yet he is conducting this without looking at the score.

I don't know how to react to this interpretation. I love Lenny and his artistic sensibility... but...I gotta say this is a bit slow for me. Maybe I'm used to other versions. The good thing is that I can hear each wonderful note and harmony individually. The bad thing is that I lose the flow. To me, Lacrmosa is 'the cry of humanity. I'm just not getting that tingly feeling of the whole of humanity crying out. But I will always be a fan of Lenny.
@Miro.Collas9 жыл бұрын
The22on I think he plays it at the right speed - for what it is.
@danieljoseph2558 жыл бұрын
You're used to the average, and therefore most common, tempo. I know the feeling. Your mind is conditioned to anticipate the phrases in their usual tempo, so with this slower speed your mind is working critically as it anticipates what will come next. With Bernstein (who was the definitive source for Mozart's work), this piece (movements 1 and 8) comes alive with this tempo---it optimized the expression of this funeral requiem written for Mozart's father who he worshiped. I recommend listening to it first by concentrating on individual elements or section, such as the male singers or the strings or the percussion, and just forget the overall structure. Feel it. Hopefully you'll see what I mean.
@danieljoseph2558 жыл бұрын
BTW, some pieces are truly ruined by a tempo that is too slow. Glenn Gould butchers Bach's "Variations" for instance, by aimlessly yawning through melodies at a painfully slow tempo, which Bach very deliberately sought to avoid by annotating precise tempos on the sheet music itself. So I'm not saying that "slower is better"", merely that each piece has an optimal tempo.

This is music, not religion, despite the text of this piece. I am an atheist and I fully appreciate art, don’t worry for my “dull inner mind”...and, to be honest, needing to believe in a superior power to appreciate humankind best expression of itself seems a bit dull, too ;)
