He didn't compose the Requiem for himself. Why should he? He was only 36 years old. His Requiem was ordered by Graf (Earl) Franz von Walsegg for his late Wife Anna - and he planned to pass it off as his own. But Mozart's unexpected death threw a wrench in the works. Mozart left the Requiem unfinished. Only some framework existed. The major part of what we play today was composed by Mozart's scholar Franz Xaver Süßmayr.
@JNKJ_CiK3 ай бұрын
That’s not 100% true. He composed most of the work, aside from most of Lacrimosa, and all of Sanctus and Benedictus, which his student used his notes to write. The rumor he made this for his own funeral was started by his own widow who claimed that as he was writing it for his patron, he started to realize this would be for his own funeral. Whether or not this is true is not certain, but it’s where this belief comes from
@chayes652 ай бұрын
It is difficult to overstate the haunting and solemn beauty of this requiem. It has been said that although he was commissioned to write it, Mozart had some sense of his own approaching demise and it was as much a requiem to himself. Its sombre majesty invokes the shocking realisation of impending death, the heartbreak of leaving behind loved ones, their inconsolable grief but yet the optimism of everlasting life. For those of us who find no good reason to think an afterlife plausible, the requiem is even more profoundly moving

I stopped listening to this music six months ago. This amazing music makes me feel so bad, like life is going by so fast. It makes me think about my parents' eventual death, which will come one day, a feeling I don't want to experience. It also brings back everything bad that I had buried deep in my mind. We may not be lost, but we are still broken. Mozart had Jesus, but here in Requiem we see him pleading with God to receive him. Why? Jesus says "Not all who call me Lord Lord will enter the kingdom of heaven, but those who do the will of the Father." I listened to classical music before if I wanted something in the background, but never really paid attention to it. This year, though, I've made it a practice to actually *listen* to the music, sit down and pay attention to its orchestration, the notes, the rhythms, the timings, what the composers wanted to convey and try to find the story behind it and there's truly never going to be another time in human history where people make music like they did during this time. This music is in a league of its own, it's incredible we're still able to listen to essentially replica's of it that sound so clear and pristine, I wonder what it would've sounded like to be in a theatre with Mozart himself leading the charge

I am fairly certain that this was actually commissioned for, I think, the funeral of the wife of his benefactor, and it was unfinished due to his own death. Mozart's wife may have hired other composers to complete it, I think including Salieri, and she spread this famous rumor that this was written for his own death.

@@superegnum it strikes me as hilarious how atheists want to shove their non-beliefs down everyone's throats while accusing people of faith of doing that same thing. I may not be a "church mouse" (in the words of my beloved Uncle Chepe) and I am sure as Hell NOT a nun (that ship sailed 25 years ago) but I am a woman of faith. I do not attend Mass (haven't since I was a child) and it has been 28 years since my last confession (the Father would excommunicate my sinning butt when he hears that) but I do pray and I do believe God listens. Just because you claim atheism for likes on social media, do not think for a second that you set the rules for me. Good luck when the shit really hits the fan.
