When I began studying composition, I made a friend who described Mozart as a 'pretty-pretty' composer. Eager to prove her wrong, I played her the second movement of this. At the end of the movement, her cheeks were streaked with tears. 'I was very wrong', she admitted.

The second movement is beautiful beyond words. For those who think of Mozart as a lightweight composer, this movement matches the seriousness and intensity of anything Beethoven or the other great masters wrote.

The 2nd Movement doesn't sound like Mozart at all. I wonder what he was thinking when writing it. It's so beautiful so romantic!!!

I pity the people that have never heard or that can't appreciate this music.

When you discover this piece by Mozart you really think he outdid himself. The range and depth in this piece is maybe only rivalled by the Jeunehomme concerto (nr 9)

The dialogue between violin and viola...just like in Mozart's concerto for two pianos. And the orchestra didn't interfere too much with the duets on both pieces...

The two incredible soloists are as if they are having a private play off in front, and for, each other. It's mesmerisigly brilliant.

Are strongly influenced by the composer's visit to the court of Mannheim. Under the influence of the composer-conductor Christian Cannabich of the mighty Manchai Orchestra - the key of the work is E flat major - the original score for the viola is written in D major, which is a semitone lower. Since the viola is tuned a semitone higher (Accorda un mezzo tono più alto), this makes it possible to use “open strings” more frequently. It is this process that allowed Mozart at the time to give the viola a brighter sound, closer to that of the violin (and also facilitated, at the same time, the execution of the viola part) , in order to obtain a clearer, tighter, more vigorous sound. Nowadays, violists mostly play in E flat major, which gives the instrument a darker, sadder, more romantic sound. The complex orchestral dynamics of the composition reflect the growing technical proficiency of the European orchestra of that period and were strongly influenced by the cavalier de Saint-George whom he had met in Paris and whose Violin Concerto No. 5 Mozart quotes in the final movement.

Michelle Legrand got an Academy Award for "his" Windmills of Your Mind which was "inspired" by the beginning of the Second Movement of this Sinfonia Concertante. In other words, Mozart composed it, Legrand swiped it! No wonder it won the academy Award. Way to go, Mozart!

Been listening repeatedly to the second movement of this piece for 7 years in a row already... Always brings back memories infused with emotions, the sunny Saturday afternoons I spend biking to my French class. Can't listen to it without feeling inspired.

The way how the sounds of the violin and the viola mingles with each other while remaining distinct is just pure harmony
