Hope you all enjoy this review video - has anyone else tried Japanese watercolors? Do you think they feel different to western watercolors? Let me know:) Also who else likes to paint or draw outside?

I find that doing art outside is very refreshing, has nice natural lighting (obviously) and presents a lot of inspiration too.

I’ve tried a lot of different paints, and I’ve noticed there’s definitely a difference between how European watercolors and Asian watercolors work. I did a review of holbein watercolors a few months ago, and I think I may have mentioned that they remind me of my gansai and my mission Gold paints as well, and all of those are Asian brands. I think the reason is because they don’t seem to use ox gall in their formulas, so they don’t disperse in water very far but they also seem super highly pigmented. I think it’s super interesting seeing paint similarities within regions, and it makes me want to kind of experiment with different brands from across the globe to see how other countries formulate their paints!

A little tip -- if something says it's 'artist quality' then chances are there's a likelihood of some lightfastness in the materials. Maybe not as much as professional materials but there will be some level of it. It's when a material says 'student quality' (or grade) that there's little to no pigment or lightfastness. However, it is better to make sure and check if you sell original pieces to ensure lightfastness ratings. Also, these are sold out already! Lucky you got a set :) Beautiful work ^^
@WindyIris
@WindyIris 7 жыл бұрын
That's a good rule of thumb - I just wanted to mention the light fastness as I know its important to many artists and I would not want to say something is light fast if it wasn't. Some of the colors, like the purple and hot pinks, tend to be less light fast anyway. I'm checking with the company at the moment to see when they will be back in stock - they were when I posted the video so they went quickly:)

I was all set to buy Gansai Tambi, which has been my dream palette. Then I found this one and I love it, love the metallic which I'm very obsessed with so they wowed me. HELP please, straight up... Anyone chime in... This Komorebi or the Gansai Tambi? I asked and one person answered and said This was a superior palette overall so now I'm like daaang! I thought ok they confirmed it I want this one now and someday as a present I can hopefully get the other but I'm on a tight budget and a mixed media artist who loves playing with water color and loves the Japanese brands. I'm also indecisive especially when I'd really love to get both but that would be impossible and unjustifiable. Can you help me with your wisdom? I never would have been swayed but now I fear that I'd have FOMO and regret not having those metallics. I would need to buy a separate metallic palette because honestly I'm disappointed the Gansai doesn't have metallics. So ht me ND put me out of my misery so I can place my order and get a set here! 🙏🙏🙏 Thanks so much!

I was exactly the same. Planned on buying the Karetuke, but came across these as I was researching. I wound up getting this 40 set. One reason was the metallic and the NEONS. The other reason was price. I got this on Amazon for $23 with a 5% coupon they have, and free shipping. They should be here on Monday. I can't wait! I plan on ordering the Karetuke too, maybe next payday.

I am replying a year later so you probably already know but the Gansai Tambi ones now have a set with metallic paints in but it is super expensive! I was the same as you, looking at the Kuretake as my dream palette but so many people compared them favourably with the Gansai Tambi paints in reviews, plus the fact that I am a beginner made me go for these ones. That way if I don't get along with watercolours or get bored/prefer a different medium then I have only "wasted" £19.99 and not almost 3 times that amount. Just out of curiosity are you still painting? Do you still love these paints?

I went to there site did a search for them nothing came up. There was another set of another brand but they were sold out. Are they on Amazon or just through their site. Appreciate if you could let me know. Looks like a nice set depending on cost would like to order them. Thank you for your true reviews on the product's. Wish they would send a extra one's sometime being disabled have to save up just to get a $20 supply time I pay bills nothing left I haven't ever used watercolor paint since I was younger now a 60 year old lady who took up coloring after a botched surgery left me inside more than out. I had never heard of adult coloring until one of my daughters told me about them after a 7 month recovering was going stircrazy it's given me something to keep me occupied and even though I am not good at all it's fun to see each one I do just a teeny bit better than the last one. I would like to play with watercolor paint to get a cheap pad just continue watching your videos give it a shot. Thanks again dear truly enjoy hearing about different companies products even though I can't afford them.😃

Hello there! I hope you can help me with these questions about the watercolours. I'm a newbie to watercolours and well professional colors since I'd only used a small set of Faber Castell but they were very cheap and not good quality and I just got this set today. What numbers did you use to make that lovely skin tone? I remember you mentioned red and green I think but which ones specifically? And do these paints rub off on the other side of the paper if you use a sketchbook?
@happymeow7825
@happymeow7825 5 жыл бұрын
ummm so I don't know the first one but for your second question, I personally know that depending on the watercolour brand you own, the colours may or may not rub off but honestly in general, watercolours tend to stay and NOT rub off because of their specific form. WIth most paints that I've tried, none of them rubbed off. You can always test to see how your watercolours react though.

I wonder if the difference of the filling of the pans is a result of pigment weight? In other words, more pigment needed for black vs a pale neon? Is that too sciency?

Don't just "practice" you need more than just practice, you need to look up tutorials, references and also try different ways to draw, keep practicing by using references, using tutorials on KZbin, Instagram, pinterest etc etc, if you're having trouble drawing something like hands, bodies and such DONT ignore it and DONT stop drawing it, it'll just make it worse, look up tutorials and practice, also remember itll take more than months to be good at something, it can take years

You know when the watercolour dries and you run/rub your fingers over the work to feel it does the watercolour end up on your fingers like chalk. That's the main problem I have with watercolours. Edit: And basically if the watercolours end up on the paper against the watercolours in a sketchbook.
@flyred77
@flyred77 3 жыл бұрын
May I ask which watercolors you use? If the mix is chalky when dry it is lacking a binder. I thought it was fairly unusual to find paints lacking binders these days. I would love to know your Brands!
