As someone whose grandmother paints etegami and whose first paint experience was with gansai, I feel this is the most accurate video about gansai i have ever seen. Gansai is misunderstood by all these great watercolor artists on KZbin and I was so frustrated. Lol So I just wanted to say thank you :) love from Japan!

Omg thank you. I've been leaving comments on some of the more popular KZbin channels who have been giving out the wrong information about Gansai paints. Also, for anyone else reading this, the breakdown of the popular "Kurataki Gansai Tambi" paints are "Brand name" + "name of medium" + "brand specific naming designation for their Gansai line (such as "Cotman" or "Winton")." Your viewers might also like to know a bit more about Etegami painting with Gansai paints. I love that you used it in the traditional way of how Gansai paints were originally made to be used. This also brings me to something else I enjoyed about your video. Specifying "Western watercolors." While there are Asian companies who make watercolors in the Western style, they are heavily influenced by Eastern watercolors and eastern style of painting so there tends to be a few differences that come out in which a lot of people see as failures on the parts of the Asian companies. One of them is granulation. A lot of watercolorists love granulation and have staple colors they can depend on granulation. When they try out Asian companies such as Holbein or Mission Gold, they tend to complain that since their watercolors don't granulate as much, especially in colors they are used to expecting some type of granulation, they categorize the companies as "striving to be artists' grade but failing." This is because the tradition of Eastern painting is to paint without granulation in a more ink-like fashion. There are some other issues but that is the main one I see the most. This is also another reason they automatically put Gansai paints into the Eastern almost pro-watercolor school of thought when it's simply that they don't understand the medium and history of which they are working with. Thank you again for this video which I've been thinking of making as my first video if I ever make KZbin videos. (My channel hopefully will be dedicated to art materials and debunking some popular ideas that are spread quickly through KZbin on art materials). Also, on the mixing of the Gansai paints. I believe that historically, you don't mix Gansai paints much not because of muddying of the colors but because Etegami painting has a sense of immediacy (though not confused with urgency), so it was practiced to put paint straight onto the paper instead of spending time mixing and thinking. I'm so glad I subscribed to you. You need way more subscribers!!!

+My Panda Paints gansai comment Thank you so much for your comments! I really wanted to be informative and clarify some issues around gansai, so to see your commentary really makes me happy. These are a lot of points that are really important to keep in mind with gansai. Did you ever get around to making your first KZbin video? I would really love to see it when it's done! About etegami and gansai, while it's true that I did use the gansai to paint an etegami style picture, gansai was not created to paint etegami. Gansai is a pretty old form of paint, and while the general concept of letters with pictures has existed in Japan for a very long time, the thing that we understand to be etegami has only existed since the 1960s or 1970s. It's definitely true that in this style of painting it's more encouraged to put color directly to the paper instead of mixing paint, but in other styles where that is not encouraged, the concern was a worry about muddying colors. Thank you so much for subscribing! I hope that you like the videos that I'll be putting out in the future :-)

Thanks for the info. I have a set of Chinese watercolors that are in tubes and behave like Western watercolors and they have no granulation. I really like that, so maybe I should stick to Asian brands for my watercolor? I forgot the brand name but they're on the cheaper end.
@SadieSavestheDay6 жыл бұрын
It really depends. But it seems like Shinhan, Holbein , and Mijello all behave this way too.
@ThunderStruck156 жыл бұрын
Sadie Saves the Day good to know. I hate granulation- it seems like it was something that couldn't be avoided way back when, and then we pulled a whole sour grapes mentality and decided it was supposed to be that way. To me it just looks like a lack of control. I think I'll try some eastern watercolor. I was eyeing the mission gold pure pigments. As they're single pigment, there shouldn't be a problem mixing.

Sadie Saves the Day very good video yes :) i would only complain that most companies use gum arabic as a binder for example sennelier uses honey mijello contains honey you said that gansai contains a mixture of binders so you maybe should mention this for “normal“ watercolors as well but this is just you know a little tiny critique i have i would recommended this video to everyone who is interested in gansai best one out there :3
@SadieSavestheDay8 жыл бұрын
+Tales Of Color Yes I thought about that, but I just wanted to present the most basic information about western watercolors because the information about binders in watercolors is widely available and many people know that most commercial watercolors are not only gum Arabic and pigment. I am also going to do a watercolor 101 focusing more on western watercolor at some point. I mentioned that basically gansai is only pigment and hide glue in the voiceover, but I get that it seems a bit lopsided when you look at the information on the screen. Thank you for pointing it out though! I wouldn't want anyone who is just getting into watercolors to be confused. It's a good idea to make the balance clear!😄👍🏿 😊 I am super pleased you like my video. It means a lot!💛

Thanks for the great info! Have you ever used the Holbein Irodori colours? I was reminded of them while watching your video. Just to add to your great information - most western watercolours also have a sugar and glycerin added. Generally it's corn syrup and it acts as a humectant while the glycerin helps the gum arabic re-dissolve. M. Graham adds honey to their paints and uses it as a selling point. Another ingredient difference from Gansai is Ox Gall. Most western watercolours have ox gall added which acts as a dispersant and makes watercolours "plume and spread" into water other colours. Holbein doesn't add ox gall to their paints which makes them very slow to blend and mix with other colours. Sorry if that's too much - I like sharing art supply info!
@SadieSavestheDay8 жыл бұрын
+Lezley Davidson Hey! 👋 No such thing as too much art supply information! Lol I haven't used the Holbein Irodori set but it looks interesting and I would definitely want to try it out. It looks like they are Western watercolors done in a Japanese style ( if that makes sense) an interesting fusion! Thanks for pointing out the different additives in western watercolors. I thought about adding it, but I wanted to keep the video simple and focus more on the gansai. Also I'm planning to do a video that talks about all that stuff that just focuses on western watercolors in the future. Sennelier also uses honey , and the QoR brand doesn't even use gum arabic but another binder that is apparently used in restoring historical watercolors! So there is definitely a lot of variation out there. Just also want to point out that not all Japanese watercolors are gansai. Actually it's not nearly as popular as western style watercolors, even in Japan. If you were curious, gansai is written 顔彩 and watercolor is 水彩. Thanks again for injecting more info!😄 I would really love the comments of my videos to be full of cool discussions about art, and I know you know a lot about it!
@LezleyDavidson8 жыл бұрын
Sadie Saves the Day Ooh great! I'm looking forward to more videos about watercolour. Whatever information you can share about the QoR binder would be appreciated. I've researched it and even talked to the Golden rep and they were very closed mouthed about what exactly the binder is - they kept calling it a "polymer" and "like a synthetic gum arabic" which was not very helpful. I ended up falling down a rabbit hole into chemistry papers - which is where I called it quits. :D
@SadieSavestheDay8 жыл бұрын
+Lezley Davidson As far as I'm aware, the binder in QOR is the material called Aquazol, which is a water-soluble polymer. Synthetic polymers tend to be things that we would often associate with plastics. Acrylic polymer, for example, is a type of plastic. Other polymers include nylon, polypropylene, and PVC. Basically most of the stuff with poly- as a prefix. (Sorry if you already know all of this!) You can actually buy Aquazol at Kremer pigments (shop.kremerpigments.com/en/mediums--binders-und-glues/water-soluble-binders/mediums-und-natural-gums/aquazol-200-63902:.html) They have some more info about it here: www.justpaint.org/the-science-behind-qor/

PS - since watching your video, I've done some research into Japanese watercolors to see Gansai "in action" and, i must say, my mind is blown and I feel that I should say that my incorporating Gansai paints into my multi-media work, i hope, in no way suggests lack of respect for this particular art form. My intention is not to treat Gansai as simply a toolbox from which to cherry-pick tools for my work but, rather, a gesture of appreciation to its impressive abilities and qualities.

I love the editing, omg I subscribe! I don't like layering and mixing that much, so after a long time I choosed the gansai tambi for me!

This was great I absolutely loved how much you elaborated on this cause I honestly had no idea that gansai was a completely different medium you made an awesome video as usual 😄

+Inkiest Of Inks 😄Awesome! lol I think of you when I'm choosing the music for the videos, so I really hoped you'd like this one. I was a bit worried that no one might care about the topic, so I'm happy you liked it!

Sadie Saves the Day Where do you find your music? You always have really great background music. I've been running into copyright dispute problems even on music that's been listed as CC for commercial use. Thanks!

+Lezley Davidson I'm glad you like the music 🎶! I link my music in the descriptions of all my videos. I find most of them here: freemusicarchive.org I have had that problem too, and KZbin has a page where you can check to see if your music is in their system for copyright claims, and I normally use that to check to make sure that my music is OK before using it.

Sadie Saves the Day Thank you! I'll try that page in the future. Luckily all my videos got released with a problem - but I'd def. like to be more pro-active about it. Thanks for sharing!

I bought a warm tro of Gansai to try. I fell in love and had to know everything about it after a mixing session and painting a sketch! I am now buying a large set and have more Sumi brushes on the way as I have one large and I love it too. I suppose rice paper and a mat and ink will follow close behind. I love traditional Asian things for some reason and I am so glad you cleared he air. So many reviews of this product have really annoys me. Keep up the great work! I even saw a vid where this lady compared the flow of her Gansai to her Daniel Smith paints. I gave her accurate information as to why the would never behave similarly. I think I will cesae reviews now and just study the traditional arts ;-)

Thank you for this great video! Ive been curious about the difference, and been wanting to try them! They are pretty affordable, and I love both watercolor and gouache, so.....it needs to happen, haha.

Lots of great info. But I'm probably not the only sound-sensitive person that finds the background beeps too distracting.

This was very informative. I had no idea that this even existed! Very fascinating! Thanks for this video. I enjoyed it greatly. Although, I will say that the kind of beeping music in the background at times distracted from what you were saying.

What was the *bizarre* sound effect in this video like a beeping alarm clock?

Great video! 💖 Would you be able to make a video about the Japanese brushes to use with Gansai and Sumi? Or about Japanse brushes? Thanks
