One thing people should remember, is that this piece was written in 1788, and Mozart was hip to the currents of his time. There is the furious optimism and energy of the early Revolution in this piece. It was a key moment in history, a peak experience, a discovery of liberation and invention. No wonder it was also a peak in music history, with this piece.

Well put, Eric Meece. I love your expression, "furious optimism." 1788...twelve years after the American Revolution, and just 3 years before the French overthrew their monarchy. It must have been an exciting- and rather scary- time in European politics. Thanks for the observation.

I sampled a half dozen renditions of this movement available on KZbin, did it through my mid-level stereo (£$€ in four figures). This is technically the best, I mean the highest quality data stream, which has so much to do with being able to enjoy the music. It is truly amazing how baroque Mozart began and how Beethoven-like he exited.

Even though Mozart planned to go on and write more symphonies after this one, I can't help but feel like this is his last statement to the world. I have often wondered the same thing. The fact that this is his final symphony and that last movement just pulls out all the stops, it really does make you wonder if he knew he did not have much time left. Had Mozart lived, say, 21 more years, having the same lifespan as Beethoven's 56 years, what he would have achieved is unimaginable. On the other hand, there might not have been a Beethoven except as some backbench footnote, or a Beethoven even more eclipsed by Mozart as Schubert was by Beethoven.

scott, you are so right. I ijust can't even imagine. I always wish I could go back in time to just before he died, take a fake version of him that would convince everyone he did, but just before he got too sick, and putting the fake in the coffin, and bury it, get modern doctors to nurse him to health, which they probably could have done with today's medicine technology. and then introduce him to cinema score writing and other such things, and the computer where he could compose on the computer instead of paper and have access to all kinds of music, he would outdo john Williams, I say this, because in a sense this would be a sort of opera way of doing things, but he could still write symphonies, operas, everything. I can't aimainge what we would hear.

John Adams , "He would outdo John Williams"... hahahahaha.. it's hilarious, embarrassing ( and unfair ) to even start to compare.,, even the great John Williams would immediately recognise he's a midget next to Mozart. The earth is big but you can't compare it with the sun, let's put it like that.. Apart from maybe Bach or Beethoven no one comes close to Mozart.

When I am gone and become dust, enter what believers call Heaven there are two spirits I want to meet. Emily Dickinson and Mozart and give them thanks for making my earthly stay more comfortable.

Hey, Burt Collins, I just heard this music for the first time. I'm an old guy, a grandpa, and as I listened to this, the thought crossed my mind that I'd like this movement played at my funeral. Why? To show my children and grandchildren that life is a great adventure, something to be savored & enjoyed, and to show them that their grandpa gratefully- and respectfully- appreciated every moment of life that was granted to him.

Idk why people cant understand that classical music can be so complicated, majestic and epic like this genius and say its calming and boring like I was humming this in school and some girl is like what sounds do you make?(I'm the classical nerd of class)

Puto Mozart

Dumb comment here: though I've listening to Mozart since my teens more than 20 years by now, this could be the perfect theme for Luffy's Gear 5 transformation. Fuggato is the GOAT!
