Any idea what happened to the Toro Rosso’s last Sunday? They both lost their rear brakes, I believe.
@F1Elvis6 жыл бұрын
They both overheated the fluid somehow and lost front brakes
@Phos96 жыл бұрын
Eduard van Raalte they lost front brakes and the rears locked as a result, IIRC I read an article that they each had stuck caliper pistons. Might have also had a hand in Gasly’s bad start.

Weren't the examples you gave (Canada 2014 and Monaco this year) failures of the MGU-K primarily? Though the effect on rear braking in those situations was as you described. I seem to recall in Canada 2014 that Hamilton's rear brakes overheated causing him to retire, whereas Rosberg was able to manage them and continue, albeit at a considerably slower pace (same with Ricciardo in Monaco this year). I'm interested to know what would happen if say the brake-by-wire control electronics (or the actuator controlled by them) failed, but the MGU-K was still operational. Is that a possible scenario or is the MGU-K intrinsically tied into the brake-by-wire system, so would fail anyway? If it is a possible scenario, how would it affect braking? Would it cause an inconsistency in rear braking because the MGU-K would be contributing differing amounts to rear braking at different points in the lap?
@F1Elvis6 жыл бұрын
Yes, it could happen, although far less likely due to the simplicity of the parts, but the effect would be exactly as you describe, with inconsistent amounts of rear retardation.

The way I have heard the hybrid BBW F1 system in the past is that the hydraulics are always directly connected to the rear wheels and what the BBW ECU does is control bleed-off to the rear hydraulics to reduce clamping force and allow more of the braking to be done by the MGU-K. Can you confirm that this is not the case and it works as you have described it in this video?

Can the teams use the actuator(s) to brake each rear wheel independently to torque the rear axle(a la McLaren's famous second brake pedal)? Awesome content, sir👍 Keep the vids coming!

Thank you for an interesting video about braking, and brake by wire. How does ABS (anti lock braking) fit into both the conventional baking system and the BBW systems? #AskElvis
@colin94186 жыл бұрын
In the event of a BBW failure is the switch to full hydraulic a fail safe automatic change or does the driver have to select a different braking mode?
@F1Elvis6 жыл бұрын
It defaults to the failsafe mode, but driver would have to then manage bias towards the front to protect rear brakes.

#askelvis What benefit do the drivers derive from checking the tyres of their own and other cars in parc ferme (as vettel and bottas did in Russia?) Thank you!

It's just a quick visual comparison reference, to see the condition of each, given they know the mileage done and conditions etc. "How did my tyres hold out compared to his" kind of thing.

Isn’t it true that in even in ‘conventional’ cars, braking is 70% or (much?) more assisted and therefore feels almost the same as drive by wire? I heard that F1 drivers have to push about 150kg when braking. So it is not assisted, just partly shared with the MGU-K. (As explained in the video)
@F1Elvis6 жыл бұрын
Yes, that's true, electro mechanical assistance is very common in modern cars and yes, 150-160kgs is pushing the pedal with everything you can muster.
@Conservator.6 жыл бұрын
Marc Priestley Image that 26 times per round for 1.5 hours in Singapore...
@Phos96 жыл бұрын
Marc Priestley non BBW in road cars typically has vacuum assist. At rest, a diaphragm has vacuum on both sides, pressing the brake pedal lets air pressure on one side of the diaphragm to assist in applying the brakes.
@Conservator.6 жыл бұрын
