After 13 years of shooting the D700 I just upgraded to the Z8. The Z8 is a beast - and there's no doubt it's a far more capable camera. But the 700 is so much more 'organic'. It's early days in my transition but right now it feels like I 'work' the Z8...but 'use' the 700. But I think what really says it all is that I have absolutely no plans to get rid of the 700. I pop the 70-200 on the Z8 and the 24-70 on the 700 and use them both as a working pair - the clarity of the Z8 complementing the lushness of the 700. It's a dream team...though rather a heavy one!

I'm not a photographer, not a camera artist or professional either but I have to take pictures for my wife because she loves ...I have 2 D700 with 85mm f/1.4 on one and 24-70 mm f/2.8 on second one I loved it. I have Nikon Z5, nikon d7000 they were lighter,more features than D700 but compared the pictures from their, I think D700 much better

D700 was my dream camera at the time but all I could afford was the D90, not bad at all, but now with those prices is tempting to get one D700 nowadays just to say that I finally got my dream camera (15 years later LOL).

Bought a cheap beat up one earlier this year. Peeling grips, worn away paint, 140,000 clicks. Still works flawlessly. Googled the name I found in the copyright info section of the menu which suggests it may have been owned by a multi global award winning wine photographer and journalist whose images are simply amazing. My images, not so much but the camera is a complete joy to use. So much so that I added a second one in near new condition to keep as a spare.

Shot with the D700 for 10+ years... great camera and great images... but it's batteries started to die too soon and those CF memory cards are now almost impossible to find... SO... I upgraded to a D810. It is now my go-to camera with outstanding dynamic range and huge megapizel files that I love... plus long lasting batteries and low-cost SD cards... and it uses the same lenses. Something not mentioned in the video is that when you add the MB-D10 battery grip and use either 8AA batteries or the D3's EN-EL4 battery (along with the BL-3 adapter cover) the D700 becomes a sort of mini-D3 giving it the ability to shoot a continuous frame rate of up to 8 frames per second (only one frame less than the D3's 9FPS).

I've been buying older DSLRs recently. The files are so much smaller, and easier to work. I have a D700, along with the D800, D300, D200, D7200, and D3300. Each of them have a special niche for my uses. The best part about the oldest of them, is the lenses I've been purchasing. The last being the excellent Nikkor AF 180mm f/2.8. At first, I tried it on my D800... but after shooting portraits of my wife with the D700, that's where it's been since. The combo is simply amazing, SOOC!

Cool, I had the D700 and now use the D750. A completely different beast it is. D700 = pro (like the D800(E)/810/850) and the D750 is 'midrange'. Build quality is less (still very good), but I prefer the D750 because of its size. Smaller, more easy to operate alongside my D7200, which has the same buttons on the same place.

I thought about getting one as it's really affordable now and as a Canon shooter I still want to be able to use some vintage Nikon glass I inherited. 12 megapixels might not be incredible by today's standards but still fine, considering even 4K monitors can only display 8 megapixels and you see how big 4K TVs have become - and they don't look bad either. You just don't want to crop the shots as much.
@mpbcom
@mpbcom Ай бұрын
Exactly, there is not much room for cropping but if you don't need that, 12MP is absolutely enough for most scenarios. And you don't watch a 4K monitor from 20 cm to actually see the pixels. Thank you for watching! - Jakub

The D700 was my first serious digital camera I had on hands in 2008. The first time I unloaded the CF Card I was blown away by the colors, the details, the professsional "look" of the pictures. This was a giant step after a first experience in the digital era with an old Canon EOS 30D and mixed results. This is also right 12 Mpixels is enough for big prints viewed from a human natural distance, more pixels can only be useful for croping.
@angelorenna
@angelorenna Ай бұрын
I had the D3 with the D700 in 2008. After years and after trying various Mirrorless cameras I realized that for the photography I do 12mp is enough for me. Modern cameras look more like PlayStations. A few months ago, thanks to mpb, I picked up two d700s again. It's a unique pleasure for me to shoot with that camera and I really like the results.I shoot at ceremonies and events and also print A3s without any problems. If you don't need to make video, if you don't need to shoot at very high ISO (I shoot up to ISO 6400 without problems), If you don't need exposure preview (can you read a light meter?), If you don't need to do big crops, then the D700 is a great deal. Do yourself a favor and at least give her a chance. ❤

I agree! I’ll go so far as to say proper exposure even at higher ISO yields excellent results. I ❤ my D700; while I don’t shoot a lot, when I want to go full frame it’s my go to girl. Otherwise it my X-T3. I recently picked up a D750, thinking it’s essentially a Nikon version of the X-T3. It’s not. And I truly think that megapixels aside, the D700 is the better body. It wasn’t overhyped in 2008, and it’s still a legend today.

Bought my 2nd D700 last september, because i've seen a good offer on MPB, as backup copy. 🙂 The D700 does all, i ever need from a DSLR. It's low MP count produces good tonality & rendition, besides, i never print bigger than 80x60cm, but have had made prints with 12-13MP (original 5D & D700) up to 120x80cm on Canvas, no pixel have been seen. My Pop passed away over ten years ago. I inherited his. At the time, he told me it would be a “camera for life”. In most aspects, he was correct. Unfortunately, parts for repairs are be becoming obsolete. Some of the D700s used a poor alloy for the hot shoe, of course mine went bad and I had to have it replaced. Along with his D300, and Fuji S5 Pro, plus all the pro glass he had, these three cameras have carried me and still do all these years later. Nothing but compliments on all the photos I’ve taken over the years. A handful of weddings, several events, mostly portrait shoots. Just did a family shoot a couple weeks ago. Matrix metering works beautifully. Pop-up flash enables Nikon CLS in a jam. High speed sync flash works superably. And just like a film camera, all the important options you need while shooting are at your fingertips - not buried in menus. Built like a tank. Feels awesome in the hands. Like the old Timex, it takes a licking and keeps on ticking. Hands down, it is still a very capable camera even today.

they dont even understand it , 9 out of 10 people will say , you get sharper images when you stop down the lens , when all lenses are sharpest wide open , in the center that is and when you stop the lens down , you sacrifice the middle center for gains in the corners , and for DOF ... they cant figure out that every part of glass works on every pixel at the same time , so more glass is always sharper , tho due to problems in the corners of the glass or edges , things improve stopped down but not in the center they dont . Center can only degrade .

And yes Refractor Telescope is a lens , bunch of people use it in Astrophotography just doesn't have Aperture , why , do they want it to be the sharpest it can be , so why don't they stop it down to get sharper image, because they aim for center sharpness that is best if you do nothing .

If you want to supercharge the AF. Grab a speedlight (SB-600, 700, or 800). Use the AF illuminator from the speedlite. An SU-800 Commander can do it too. The D700 also has access to dummy batteries too. If you can find one, you can have infinite battery life. The coolest thing about the D700 is having a pop-up flash. Not many if any full frame bodies regardless of era especially today comes with one.

@dct124
@dct124 14 күн бұрын
@pradeepkumar-sx1ty No. A speed light doesn't affect AF speed. In low light, if you have illuminator (tiny flashlight 🔦) on your camera it can help pick up focus in a dark area. You do gain access to freezing fast motion b/c of the bright light and flash speed. If you're thinking of the IR illuminator, that's just giving your camera something to visually focus on in the dark like an AF assist lamp (tiny flashlight 🔦). The D750 comes with an AF assist lamp. I don't own one, but try putting the camera in Single AF (selector bottom left of body). If that doesn't turn it on, it's probably in the AF menu. That or just use the one on the flash. Pretty sure an SB-800 has an IR assist.

It's honestly surprisingly capable, but you might lack cropping ability, or a very long lens. 12MP isn't much forgiving for wildlife. I found nyself reaching more for the APS-C D300 instead (which is basically the same thing as the D700 in APS-C form. It even uses the same vertical grip to get to 8fps, and uses the same AF system)

After owning 3 nikon d610, and 2 d800 over my last 8 pro years as a food photographer, i’ve landed on a almost new d700 and Love it! My d800s has a nice resolution but the simplicity and the power of the d700 is quite unique. Even a original batery grip was added and feels really nice. My ssd and hhd Love the low Mpx count!

I still enjoy my D700, I tried to sell it on facebook but nobody was interested. KInd of happy that it didn't sell !. The best things for me are that the most common settings are available from dedicated buttons, so you don't have to to go into menu to change things. for example, single shot AF to 3D tracking with one flick of a button 👍👍

One of the absolute greats. I think the “5d is greatest” crowd are emphasizing its video abilities. The build quality and ergonomics of 12mp on a full frame was a low light monster. For my money, the D700 was the greatest value for a DSLR photographer. We’ve only recently significantly improved on the D700 with the Z8.

The 5D doesn't do video.. the 5D mkii does. 5D is just a good camera for being so damn cheap, though I'd argue the 6D is the best value of the cannons.

I still use a D3 and D700 professionally because of the great sensors. Resting in my closet is a D300, D800, Z7. Some may complain that the D700 has 95% view. D3 is 100% with same sensor. Also some would complain about the single card slot. Neither issue bother me.

I still have my D700 from original buy,3500 exposures. Also two 4000 exposure count D3 and I can not separate the raw images. GREAT images. GAS gave me many newer ones up through the Z6 ll and Z7 ll. Better yes, bbut not that much especially when considering pixel count modification in photoshop now available.

Oh boy... I still shoot weddings with it :))) along with other newer cameras, of course, but surprisingly, I shoot a lot more shots with the D700 than with the other cameras. Somehow, I always choose this camera over the others, because of the look of the photos. I have the impression that the colors and character of D700 are very much reminiscent of photos taken by Steve McCurry. And I mean the raw files!

Ok, but why do you compare D700 with Canon 5D ? Because they have both 12 mp ? Nikon is from 2008 and the Canon from 2005. I understand that they are each considered "classic" , but 3 years in technological term , is quite a difference...
@mpbcom
@mpbcom Ай бұрын
It is and I am aware of that. I picked the original 5D as both the D700 and the 5D 'Classic' are often described as "Legendary" cameras and both are praised for similar things like the 'filmic' image quality or colour rendering. I feel the 5D Mark II which was released in 2008 doesn't have the same cult following as the original 5D, hence this comparison. I hope it explains my decision. Thank you for watching! - Jakub
@mikafoxx2717
@mikafoxx2717 Ай бұрын
@@mpbcomthe 5D 2 does have a bit of a cult, same with the 6D. It was after this point that they fell down for color, so they say. The D600 is often said to be good too and the others less good. Kind of interesting considering the discussion of the color filter array being better thanks to not chasing low light performance. Cameras like Arri heavily lean into very accurate color filter arrays for the most human color differentiation. The raw itself can never buy bright to be the same as we see it and the closer the filters match our eyes, the better it is. Certain teal green plastics totally mess with some cameras I've noticed.

D200 owner. On my second body. The first body was sold at 1mil clicks 12yrs ago. Haven't cracked 100k on this one. I say that to say if you're looking for reliability, these Nikon bodies are very tough and very reliable. Things didn't really change until the D4, D750, D800 era. The look from the D3/D3s, D300, D700, and D200 have that filmic look
@adamaufdencamp5080
@adamaufdencamp5080 Ай бұрын
The D700 was so good that I have to wonder if most image quality improvement since has come from better lens design and manufacturing. The newer Z lenses are a fair bit better than the equivalent f mount designs. A million clicks is a very solid number! That’s the sort of stat that supports my devotion to Nikon. In over twenty years of Nikon use I’ve dabbled with other brands and formats. None have had the build quality and solid feel of my Nikon bodies. My most recent body purchase is a Zf and the feel of it is soooo good. I’d say the lineage is quite obvious between the F100, F6, D200, D700, and Z8. I like that connection.

@adamaufdencamp5080 Yup, very durable cameras, inside and out. Our US military still uses Nikon for its durability and extremely High ISO. These cameras have stopped bullets, and grenades. The extreme ISO is used in pitch black conditions for recon. I haven't bought a new camera in a while. I think a ZF, Z8, or Z9 after prices drop more will be my next body. I'm still going to shoot jpeg. I've worked with the jpeg files from the Z9 and they act similar to my D200. Everything from the D300-Z6iii and Z7ii jpeg files falls apart before my near 30yr old CCD sensor. I now want video, b/c people want video and it's cost me jobs. The only Nikon series to avoid; D600 series (oil splatter), D3000 and D7000 series (terrible mounts). Only Nikon DSLR bodies worth buying. D40, D90 D200, D300, D300S, D500 D7500 D700, D750, D780 D800, D800E, D810, D850 D2HS, D2X, D3, D3S, D3X, D4, D4S, Df, D5, D6 Any Z body is worth buying. The D6 got a lot of hate, but it's one of the only Nikon DSLR I think still covered under warranty. I think the D780, D850 and maybe the D500 are still covered under warranty.

I was lucky enough to own the D700 brand new at the time. The release of the D300, D3 and the D700 was a monumental step for Nikon which Canon managed to close the gap only few years later technologically wise. My modern A7IV doesn't even come close to the feel and ergonomics this camera had. It really does feel like a toy compared to the D700.

Rumor was that the sensor was designed with, or by, Panasonic and has differences with the D3 sensor, possibly in the firmware. The images have great color and the noise seems to be more like film grain. The older Nikkor glass can still produce amazing images.
