I've been using MSB and LSB bank select and program change parameters to call patches from other external hardware synths and sound modules for years. This functionality is absolutely essential, and without it, an MPC wouldn't be a true MPC. Remember when MPC used to stand for "MIDI Production Center?" Thanks for discovering this issue and bringing it to Akai's attention. Hopefully, they are currently working on a fix for this issue.

I don't do live shows but I used to use the msb and lsb in the 90's. Today I would likely just sample the parts or print whole tracks only because I make music for me in my bedroom. Honestly hadn't given it much thought in a while but I can absolute appreciate its usefulness . Im shock general midi has remained universal for so long. Which is awesome.

Mutes also need to mute midi instead of audio so you don't cut tails

What’s weird is coming from a daw I didn’t like that the midi was the only thing muted and left the tail and now I can’t go back. But I guess if it’s more like a daw you need to use send and return. Would be nice to have the option of mute track vs mute midi.

I mainly use my MPC to sequence hardware. MSB and LSB are essential for recalling patches/program changes! Agree 100% this needs to be fixed. Thx for the video 🙏

When the MPC 2 software dropped I loved the ability to midi up multiple synths via traditional midi and USB. One major issue I discovered was when I use my Minimoog Voyager with the newer MPCs whenever I stopped my sequence and restarted it, it would turn the delay (switch) off on the Voyager's sound thus if I had a sound using delay I would have to repress the delay switch on the Voyager or I wouldn't have my desired delay effect. This behavior wasn't happening in older MPCs i.e. (2000xl, 3000le, 2500). The delay parameter seems to be sharing a parameter inside of the MPC software. I pointed it out to Andy & Akai Tech Support who all seemed baffled and for a couple years we still have no solution for that. Kinda sad in an otherwise very powerful piece of gear.

Just a few minutes ago I experienced this issue while using my MPC Live 2 with Beta 3 to sequence my Roland JD-990. Then I went to look it up on KZbin and your video popped up! I appreciate you highlighting this issue so maybe Akai can fix it soon.

Another issue I’ve encountered, that has been since 2, is recording audio tracks if the MPC is being synced to another device, does not work. It de-arms the track after a millisecond

Earlier this year, i watched one of your previous videos about MSB, LSB, and was stoked to learn that my X SE could completely control other instruments. I am still learning my MPC, but eventually expect to be able to control my Roland TR-8S and TB-3 with the MPC. One of the major appeals of MSB, LSB control is that if I know my way around my primary instrument (MPC), then i don't have to learn other midi instruments inside and out. Every drum machine, synth, ect is a technical world in itself. So, yes. The MPC needs to be able to do this. Otherwise, it's just a glorified groovebox. Although im not there yet,I understand your frustration.

I saved projects or individual sounds on the keybiards and synths. MSB/LSB doesn’t save things like filter cutoff, ASDR, LFO rates, etc. I tweak all my sounds so all that time will get lost if I were to shut the machine off without saving those adjustments to the sound modules themselves. It takes longer, but it is definitely a superior workflow (for me)

Yes I use it😇if I’m going to perform live and recording sound sometimes. You can do a complete concert with only the instruments being slave to the MPC with midi notes and not having one human physically playing on stage with you. Yes, this have to be fix

I actually found a way 2 work around this. If U start your 1st note a little bit behind the 1st beat, when the loop comes back around, it will play the note, or chord in sync afterwards. But a fix would be better. I'm having issues with my midi volume levels not being the way I saved them.

This also happens with internal instruments. A skip and missing notes but when it loops back around it plays as it should.

100% Agree! I use it all the time with my mpc one + and jupiter-xm and it works so good! The mpc 3 is unusable for me until they fix this and the and the pattern mutes. I downgraded to 2.5.

That’s a SUPER IMPORTANT part of my work flow. When using external gear. It is useless for my X SE to have the Beta on it so my Key61 is the machine for testing. Also importing midi files still creates a new sequence….. Why? How does that make sense? I know it beta but to carry that counterproductive functionality over baffles me to no end.😕

I found if you turn the loop off then it tends to not skip the first notes, so I've been having to use looper to turn my midi sounds into audio to make sure im not missing those first notes, hope that helps.... Shout to the channel 👊🏾

I’m old school 5 pin MIDI user from the 80s. I never knew that modern equipment could send MSB & LSB that quickly. I always had to include 1 measure at the start of each song in order to give all the external gear enough time to change patches, etc. was this issue you’ve described not an issue in 2.0?

My issue is when I’m recording my montage , I press play on my MPC it brings my sounds to a maximum 127 volume. I don’t like that.

I have that problem in 2.15 and it seems to be most noticeable in the Korg keyboards and Yamaha. I don't hear it in the Roland

Yea Bolo - I get you. But something has to give on that first data flow - like the MPC is super low latency, so if a prog change comes out of it at the first downbeat then you are limited with how fast the recieving synth can respond to that prog change at the same time as playing the first note (with the correct sound). At the moment, what's happening is the data being recieved by the outboard synth is saying 'hey up, prog change.... that's important, do it."... but at the same time it is responding promptly to the note info. It is not a 'mind reader' :) So, back in the day - probably when you was in diapers (LOL) we used to insert a bar at the start of a track. All that happened during that bar was the follwing: 1/ It allowed the clock to stabalize at the very top of the song. 2/ Any system exclusive info was transmitted (beyond what we are trying to do here) and finally 3/ LSB and MSB were sent for all enabled tracks. So that could be quite a lot of data.... After that 1 bar the song would start. Seamless.. Everytime. I still practice this habit when using prog change... and still do it when working with the modular, since it can be slow to pick up the clock (clock pulses need time to settle and be respnded to, even if it is just a couple of beats and a few milliseconds). So... TL;DR ..... insert 1 bar of silence for your prog change. It has the added benefit of making your song go on even bar numbers too (i.e. 2 to 4, instead of 1 to 3) which can make counting out stuctures easier for longer sections. All the best. Granpa Steve :) Edited to add...regarding the programe change between sequences.... yes... move the program change timing a few clicks earlier - you will need to experiment to make sure it falls on time. Adjust the click shift by say 4 clicks (1/96th subdivisions) and you should get a smooth change. PPS... the reason 2.x worked was probably because they added that 4 ticks of latency to the note outs, or moved the prog change back 4 ticks... in other words so the prog change and note trigger do not happen at the same time. Because it is 'built in' you do not see or notice this wizardry happening.... but it is, my guess.

Im thinking about a way to test this, in this example you used, can you copy the sequence to something like sequence 60 (for test purposes, and youll understand why I picked something so high in a second), copy sequence 60 to sequence 59, remove all of the MIDI notation in the piano roll in sequence 59, then set sequence 59 to 1 bar, 1 beat per measure, at the fastest tempo you can, but only for sequence 59. Jump into song mode and start with sequence 59 and switch to sequence 60 and see if it skips. As much of a pain in the ass as this is, it might be possible to insert a blank sequence that has your MSB / LSB change and the extremely short gap might not be noticeable, and it might avoid the skipping issue. I have a Motif XF8 (the predecessor to the Montage) and I never knew the MPC had this capability, I dont even know how to set MSB and LSB, a short video on how this is done would be something Id be interested in. Do one of these videos please, and, Id love to see how you sample your montage into the MPC, cause my God does Yamaha have really authentic natural percussion that Id love to sample. Oh, and let me just clue you in, if you have never looked at Yamaha's arps, umm, they are the best out of the workstations (Korg, Kurzweil, Roland, and ofc, Yamaha). The tens of thousands of arps in the Yamaha board are one of the main reasons I have my Motif, and the only other board Im in the market for right now is the Korg Kronos 2 (as much as I love the Jupiter, Im not into sound design enough to spend this kind of money).

@@BoloDaProducerthey haven’t sadly. Track mutes hard cut audio. If you have a long sample, normally it would play out if you muted after the sample was triggered. Now it’s cut immediately as you mute

Bolo I have noticed a similar problem but I don't use external instruments. Sometimes the very 1st note I play doesn't record correctly, I have turned quantize on off and everything else. It can be any sound or drum if I start with say a double hit It changes the timing, it's hard to explain but if this makes sense say a hi hat and it's like tic tic hold tic it will play like tic tic tic ,3 hits in a row with no hold in-between but after the 1st part it will record just like I hit the pad but that start stays off timing. It's the part right after the count in that is off .

Honestly I just use Ableton now and left my MPC on 2.15 and use it for a sketch pad and for building up ideas. I really wish they had went with MIDI clips for 3. Would have opened up so many possibilities in the Arranger view. Would have been even cooler if there were clips that could by choice be auto placed on other sequences, would make the MPC an amazing device for live performance if you like to do some of the recording of loops live. Have you tried placing the program changes on a separate track to avoid the skipping of notes? It’s good house keeping to do it this way anyways.

I be thinking it's my stuff, but I was not even about to unhook everything and play process of elimination. I feel like I'm always fighting for msb lsb even in the daws. Cubase 13 nope, Reason 13 nope and a few others. They only give us CH and program#. With MPC they got it, but geez don't let us down with that. Especially for Roland, Korg, and Yamaha.

@@BoloDaProducer I probably need to dig deeper then. I only got the channel numbers, bank selector, and program number. Unless its like bank 0 = 0 - 128, bank 2 = 129 - 256 and so on. I know that wouldnt be the correct numbering since they wont go no higher than 128 per bank. Idk ive searched YT cant figure it out.

I have 8 midi tracks to control a roland workstation, every time the tempo starts the mpc brings the volume of many tracks to maximum, and I always notice it too late... and I also lost the mute functions and only through external midi controllers, impossible to create a midi mapping for these 🤨

I gave up a long time ago of trying to use msb and lsp I know exactly what bolo talking about. I use to try to get those banks to control plugins inside of daws sometimes it would change the preset sometimes it wouldn't smh I gave up .there is another way I use if there is and link capability to change preset i use the midi map option to link to that. I use that instead of the bank lsp msb method. When it's dealing with hardware like my MicroFreak if I remember correctly my live 2 was able to change the MicroFreak Presets in 2.15 I haven't tried it in 3.0. So basically I do understand how important for that feature to work .still I gave up on it tho 😂😂😂

@@BoloDaProducerwell that’s what the issue you’re having is. It’s an old school thing I remember dealing with back in the days. Machines calling up sound banks with a bit of lag. But once it’s been called once it no longer lags. I recall that issue having to do with Latency. Correct if I’m wrong. I contemplate if the problem can be solved by going back to the old midi ports or using the usb. Truth is I haven’t experienced the usb for midi yet but I know it a reality.

Basically when u hit play it send msb and lsb and program change to mpc it make it freeze on first note…I had a problem like that with older mpcs and created a workaround it’s telling it to go to this sound and playing first note at same time and it cause a skip one time it actually made my beat different with the missing notes😂😂 😂😂
