I started on a mpc2000 back in 2000, we did everything to try and isolate sounds. Wiggle the 1/4 inch cable in the back, phase cancel stereo sample, use karaoke machines to remove vocals. You really had to use your brain and make it work. But being wired from the 12 sec sampling time era is a blessing bc the possibilities open up crazy

Great stem shootout, they both sound good, with a characteristic to use each system algorithms as an another colour in your production. Let’s not get lazy with Hip hop production and keep the energy pushing in creation. Love your voice by the way, beautiful to literally have the Balance, life needs Excellent Women Producers / Tutors 👩🏻‍🏫. MPC got the weight and body to the sound with less fluffy artefacts.

Spot on breakdown. I use Serato studio, and just from listening to this tutorial on my phone, MPC seems to have more girth with the stems. Serato tends to have a digital white noise that can be irritating. Now, like you alluded to, I am from the era in which you have to figure out how to make it work regardless of what equipment or DAW you use. In the comment section, someone provided a solution that I never thought to do that may work. They mentioned that you could kill the eq to get rid of the background noise. Goes to show you that you can teach an old dog new tricks. Anyway, great video and your track is ⚡️🔥💯.

This is a great comparison! I too have tried a whole heap of these. I quite like the way the akai doesnt try to 100% eliminate the other elements and retains a slightly less phased artifacted sound. For my money the best one I have tried is Ultimate vocal remover and its free so double win!. LALAAi is also a good un.

Appreciate everything you do, And I Agree with you, we come from that era where you made it work. I remember talking to my cousin 13 years ago, and asking him is it possible isolate instruments on a finished song, And he replied yeah, and he said if you can get the right frequency. He’s a computer tech person and he lives in NY . I remember telling him, if I can do this I could be rich. Only because I can chop the hell out of records ……so the idea was always was in my head and over time I had stop believing it 😂. So we are hear now and it’s possible. It can only 🙀 get better. I’m original from Brooklyn NY, And I truly can’t relate to you, and working with limits. The possibilities are so endless with remixes.

I see that ambient music tend to blend more sonically so when using stem seperation you get more artifacts or I should say residual sound from other stems a lot. R&B\ Soul some rock or any music that use less ambient effects or sound tend to seperate a lot better. I pretty much know how its going to turn out when I hear the track. This was a excellent comparison. I absolutely loved the knowledgable commentary along with it. Keep doing what you do. Love to see more. Thank you. 🙏🏾

Thank you for uploading your video. I've just got the MPC stems and chopping them first then stemming them is a good shout. I think Serato processed the samples quicker. But you can't beat the MPC for the level of sound it puts out especially after normalising them.

As far as starting with nothing...I would have to go with the MPC stems because of the Price difference between the two (Hell I'm Old and still on a budget). One thing I can say without a doubt, Them Drums hit hard in the MPC. LOL, Thanks again for taking the time to lay it out like this and also thanks for the "Gem" on slicing prior to processing with the MPC Stems.

MPC does a better job to my ears. I use RipX too, which is more on par with MPC. They all leave artifacts in reality, just depends how clean or messy the song is. I've been testing both over the last week and to be honest there's really not that much difference depending on the source material. All have artefacts. Some tracks just sound awful, some great I think Serato is way, way more versatile though, it puts the sample straight into time with the DAW and gives the song Key there's also a lot more options for manipulating the audio. I'm not a fan of separated drum and/or bass stems with either to be honest but I have more drum samples than I'll even need and prefer to program my own. I prefer my bass ( especially sub ) to be super clean. If standalone comes along for MPC it might be a different story, but I think the onboard processing will be slow. Time will tell with that one. I still think that Lalal is by far the best quality though but you don't have any chopping.

@ around 23:00 the direct comparison am I crazy or does the Serato sound good on the surface but then in the background you can hear it actively killing the volume and creating what sounds like a reverb warble? Its present in the drum section too, its sounds like a flanger not a reverb though my mistake. Like a metallic flanger slowly oscillating.

If you are using your Akai mpc as your DA converter in Controller mode and in Serato the MPC is still the audio interface this is not a an equal playing field because the MPC has that "thud" and "Air" in its DA(which is artificial), there needs to be another converter which is the baseline, playback is everything. Just use test tone from your computer you will hear the difference. Cubase has had stem separation for over 5 years now, you can also emphasize which stem you want to be more focused on, it can do a whole 5 minutes song in less than what Akai does for one minute song. The converters in Akai is below industry standards is accenting many frequencies to make it sound like a pro machine. It is not one. Great Video and Thank you.

@@algernonfranklin yes it is but when you take it standalone the converters in the MPC will do the conversion and if in controller mode you are using another audio interface you will hear a difference.
