HBD I think the core of it is whenever someone takes a left turn with their music, there’s a risk for a dip in “quality” and if you’re in a weekly schedule it’s not the best environment to encourage experimentation. If you have to deliver a consistent schedule you’ll want to use consistent techniques. Soon as you let go of the fact that your quality might dip temporarily, you open yourself up to the quality reaching new heights. This is true for KZbin as well. This environment rewards consistency but sometimes you have to say fk everybody and just see where it takes you.
@mpcheadАй бұрын
Couldn't agree more. But I think I exposed my habits when I tried making a beat per week. I realized how robotic some things had become for me. You definitely need to say fk youtube now and again, I do.

Printing and committing can create a lot of momentum. Also, early in the process I ask myself “Do I care to ever hear this again? Does it have a mood I’ll care to evoke again? Should it exist?” This always prevents wasting time. It forces my attention onto the merit of what I’m doing, and interrupts the inclination to just build things mechanically.

Just like in business: there is efficiency and there is innovation, and the hard truth is that one cancels out the other. In the case of efficiency you want to get something done fast as possible with the least amt of effort, but when we want to be innovative there has to be a lot of room for errors and a lot of time to be killed just to come up with something great 🎉 Happy Birthday!!

Man, I needed this video. I've gotten so sick of making beats. I'm going to chill out for a bit and let go of the bullshit and processes. When I am ready, it is going to be fun
@David_ruffinАй бұрын
I just finished reading 3 shades of blue about Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and Bill Evans… Miles said “Man, sometimes it takes you a long time to sound like yourself”. Take all that you’ve self learned and forget about it. Break out that tascam four track you were talking about and track everything in and make that beat tape. As sample based artists it does get boring doing the same stuff over and over. That’s usually when I break out a different sampler and get different results/sound. Whatever draws inspiration, I’m all for it. Peace and blessings to you and yours. 🫡
@darumabeatsАй бұрын
there's an overload of this sound, and we need to create different stuff, we must don't do it for others but for us. Without thinking that nobody will like it or something like that. I'm feeling the same man, the exploration process is long and hard, we have just to dig more, or dig in another piece of terrain. keep going, but at the same time, take ur time man

It's been really hard to sit down in the studio and do anything at all this last year (became a dad). There's hardly any mental capacity to create anything, sitting down and throwing on a record and sampling the same way I've always done, throw some drums on it, try and make 12 sections out of a 30 second sample, add other sounds, and so on and so on. It's just gotten very monotonous for me, robotic like you mention. I write other kinds of music and play in other bands as well so I'm lucky and happy to have that outlet but even then, you have to rely on others to get together and be there. A whole other set of challenges. Not sure what I'm rambling about here but I'm with you Marlow, sometimes you gotta step back and do something else. It'll take the time it takes to get back to freshness and creativity or a new way of doing things.

And I've used that to just do things completely differently. I'm loving it now. Not even worried about the tempo or the genre. Just whatever sounds good and makes me smile.

Happy birthday Marlow! As a beat-maker, I just want to make music for people to rock to. Whether you're studying, working out, cleaning, etc. I want to make beats relating to people. I'm not trying to get famous off music of sort, if it happens good, if it doesn't that's good too. This journey is more therapeutic than creative.
@lrgstmrgАй бұрын
This is about more than your workflow. It's another version of self expression - these feelings of discontent and the desire to break out of old patterns are coming from somewhere deeper, and they're manifesting through your music. You already know that music channels emotions. By honing that ability, you've created a pathway that your subconscious is using to communicate with you now, to try to push you in the right direction, and to bring things to your attention that you're not consciously addressing. You're not the only one, brother. It's a good sign, but you need to try to figure out what it's saying, and what it wants, because whatever it is, it's what you really want, too.

Happy born day, brother. To many more. I feel the EXACT SAME WAY, fam. I vacillate back and forth between creating to create and finding fulfillment there and getting pulled into the machine, content creation, fast media, social media - I don’t really FEEL that part of it. I don’t want to loathe what I do. But the PROCESS of creativity, the journey, means so much to me and is so inherently a part of who I am, I always come back to just creating to create. And also being a designer, photographer, filmmaker…I have to tap into other parts of who I am, not just as a beatmaker, but as a creator and to not get bored or become uninspired. Forward always. And I’ve found myself more and more, starting to mesh all the aspects of who I am, and finally feel that I’m tapping into something special. This reminded me of that, and propels me to always remember it. No borders. No boundaries. Just be dope and put out stuff you love - and if it taps your soul, brings joy and touches others - that’s winning. 🙌🏻

Collaborate with somebody who is not as skilled as you and you will find that you may learn some new value in their workarounds and things like that. I would also recommend learning new parts of the machine when you get stuck. I used to hate the step sequencer within the MPC and I picked it up when I hit an Interest Plateau. It's important to distinguish this from a quality plateau, though they are both the only two dissatisfactions that the producer faces internally. I hope you enjoy the new challenge. For now, interest is your greatest difficulty and that can birth a new skill too. Happy Birthday, Marlow.

Happy Birthday, Marlow🎉 And yes, I watched a video yesterday about how to chop samples according to progressions much like 9th Wonder. I instantly checked out. Not that I don't see the value of the technique. But it felt monolithic. Like we have to start following someone's bulletprint. Ironically, I just make beats in the spirit of Dilla and Madlib. I’ve gone back to DJ Krush, one of my idols, and just listened to one of his live sets on youtube the other day. It was the most inspiring thing I’ve heard in a while, it reminded me that he really found his own lane. My goal now (after I’ve finished the EP i’m working on) is to play live and make beats with live performance in mind. Not feeling like a beat has to be ”finished”. Every performance should be unique in some way - that’s what I’m striving for. I want there to be mistakes- at least that tension of mistakes being possible.

Hip-hop has a mold. That mold can be confiding. A straight jacket around you. In the 90th European musicians (Bristol was the epicenter) grabbed hip-hop, sampling, and expanded its range by adding ellements of drum and bass and jungle while reducing the BPM by slowing down samples to the extreme. Trip-hop was born. Then Indy Rock was added to the party, and the Sneaker Pimps were born. Then, the degrading of signal quality was discovered, and Lofi erupted. Neo Soul (sorry Philadelphia, I know, I know) followed suit. A friend of the family was an artist, his etchings were second to none, but they didn't sell, and he was bored with the laborious process. So he started painting instead. But in painting, he never found his style. So on my wall are three paintings, one inspired by Braque, on inspired by Van Gogh, and one inspired by Vermeer. The thing is, at the Rembrandt museum, I mentioned his name to the curator. His answer, "He was the best etch artist since Rembrandt. Why on earth did he stop?". I explained his problem, and he laughed sadly when I told him he became an art teacher at a local college. He inspired countless students to become artists, graphic designers, and even photographers. Lesson to learn: if you are really good at making hip-hop, you have two options. One is to become a great hip-hop producer with its own recognisable style. The second is to break the mold of the genre and expand its vocabulary. Both take courage and persistence. The first option can lead to boredom and imposter syndrome. The second can lead to not being recognized by the flok and thus to isolation. A third option is to drop down the rabbit hole of never finding your own style and wind-up teaching. That seems to be your choice (or Howie B's, or Thomas Dolby's), as I learned from watching your channel. All choices are valid, as you can be great at all of them.

Happy birthday! I'm still quite new to beat making (my background is in heavy metal, go figure), so I have a "beginners mind". I basically do "everything wrong" because I simply do not know the "rules", but I love what I create on the MPC. The same thing happens in the metal scene by the way: lots of "proper ways" to do things. I cultivated a beginners mind in that scene by simply not caring about its rules and generally be a little ignorant of the trends.

This is a very nice video to see, someone going through a creative struggle within creative process. i too tend to find something and stray away from it for awhile. i think its healthy to want to be able to grow and have change, its important to understand that these tools still have use too. a few ways of creating can sometimes cause me to get confused but its important to just have fun and as the title states, "let go of control." just let your mind do what it wants to do, and trust your intuition rather than your doubts.

Happy Birthday 🎉 May it be blessed. I'm still a beginner with production, but I can speak from a deejay perspective. When I'm looking for a breakthrough or something fresh, I turn to genres that are way out of my comfort zone. I was on a Neo-Swing kick for a while. Lately, I've been playing around with Italian folk music. The difference in composition usually challenges me and sparks new ideas. Then, I just tinker around with the equipment until I can make the sounds I'm looking for. Idk if that helps. Like I said, I'm still a beginner with this, but it's definitely fun when it comes to mixing.

We “Master” the flow & Therefore it may become mundane. I feel like, maybe we should consider trying different avenues with our crafts & “masteries”.. In your situation, what other passions or creative interests do you have? Then apply your music to that. Create a new lane for yourself, even if it doesn’t exist, yet. What you have is something special, and you’ve “mastered” it. I believe in you, and I hope you take what you have, further. 💎
