After dislocating and subluxing my left knee numerous times throughout my life, I finally made the decision to pursue surgery. On 6/14/19, I got a Tibial Tubercle Transfer and a Medial Patellafemoral Ligament (MPFL) Reconstruction. This video shows my experiences during the initial three days after surgery.

WHAT’S EHLERS-DANLOS SYNDROME?
The Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes (EDS) are a group of more than 13 genetic connective tissue disorders that affect the joints and ligaments, blood vessels, gastrointestinal tract, and autonomic nervous system, among others. The most common type of EDS is hypermobile EDS (hEDS), which used to be known at type III. Some of the most common symptoms and co-morbidities of hEDS include chronic joint pain, joint instability and dislocations, dysautonomia, and GI tract dysmotility.

I'm glad to see you vlogging. I was very worried about you. That was a major surgical procedure. I understand about the pain med side effects I had breast cancer and had bilateral mastectomies ten years ago. They had me on a Dilaudid pump. The Dilaudid made me so sick that I insisted they disconnect the pump. I managed with no pain meds. It was better than the side effects of the Dilaudid. They did give me Tramadol which was somewhat better but still caused side effects. You look a lot better today than you did when you were in the hospital. I'm hoping that you'll improve day by day.

Tramadol works better with Tylenol.....so funny that tramadol makes you loopy! I take 100mg as my regular dose and it doesn’t affect me at all!! I don’t find it to be all that affective- but, like you, I’d rather take the tramadol over the oxycodone!! I hope recovery is quick!

I have to say, the bending is the worst part in my experience. I also took Tramadol, but also had a continuous nerve block that infused over 3 days. It gets better! I was told that it was okay to take tramadol, especially at night for a good amount of time with the guidance of my pain management doctor. Feel better! It is worth it! I have 0 regrets with this surgery.

Izzy regarding different meds. I was curious and decided to Google one of the meds you named. And this is what was presented. Mythbusters: Ketamine: not just for horses, also for badgers Ketamine is a short-acting general anaesthetic used for both human medical and veterinary purposes. It is termed a ‘dissociative’, because it impedes the brain’s sensory connection to the body. ........ Well I found it interesting that it was used for equine medicine,,, hmm

Not to scare you, but when my pupils are different sizes like that, for me it's a sign that my ICP is high. I have EDS, IIH, chiari, POTS, etc. Since I got my VP shunt, my pupil sizes aren't as off as they were. Opioids can raise ICP, at least in some people (not necessarily to a dangerous level or anything). Hope you heal well and quickly, for a zebra. :)

I hope you have a speedy recovery! I was wondering why they gave you an epidural if you were under general anesthesia? Was it for post surgical pain relief? I had open heart surgery last summer (aortic aneurysm from "hEDS"), and the majority of my pain was in my neck and back, even though my sternum had been sawed open and cranked apart. It was suggested later on that I had multiple subluxations from laying on a cold hard operating table for 8 hours. I was unable to lift my arms or head, and the physical therapists at the hospital refused to assist with anything but yanking me out of bed to walk a few steps. The pain seemed to build over my 10 day hospital stay. I'd beg anyone who came into the room to put a fist or balled up towel behind a trigger point. When they wouldn't, I'd beg to be knocked out so I could just sleep for a few hours and get a short break from the pain. I would cry until I vomited and sat in darkness due to a constant migraine they wouldn't treat either. I am terrified of going into surgery again because of pain I now know is not proportional to the surgeries I undergo, and the fact that I am unable to control EDS pain in a traditional hospital setting, especially after a major surgery that significantly limits my mobility. Do you think you were were you able to avoid a flare of "hEDS pain, because you generally had mobility of most joints afterward? Did they take any special precautions because of your EDS? Have you had other surgeries?
@IzzyKDNA
@IzzyKDNA 5 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry this all sounds so horrible. The precautions they took were to use a cadaver's tendon to replace my ligament, whereas most people use their own hamstring. They didn't use general anaesthesia - but I wasn't totally sure why they use an epdiural but it's pretty standard for this type of surgery

About a year after my TTT I had a partial knee replacement. Also my TTT was outpatient. (Which was horrible!) I hope you have great success!

This is the part that freaks me out!! Like, what does it feel like? How do they do it? What does it feel like when they put the stuff in, like do you get sleepy or is more like wide awake to instantly out? Could you have stayed awake if you would have tried or is it impossible? Haha. Basically whatever you remember about that part would be helpful. Thanks so much!

Are you allowed to ice your knee? After my knee surgery, icing helped to decrease the swelling, thus decreasing the pain. I was allowed to ice 20 minutes on then 20 minutes off as long as I wanted. If your dr didn’t mention it, maybe you could ask if it would be helpful in your case. The knee bending exercise is tough, but gets easier every day😁

I was awake for my epidural-I’ve had LP’s & was traumatised, but an anaesthetist doing it-MAGIC!!! I didn’t feel anything except for the local (tiny bee sting then it’s over!) They also put a nerve block in my leg after the epidural (didn’t feel that either!) I HIGHLY recommend it-if ur not offered it, ASK!!! I couldn’t feel my knee for 2 days, so by then, the absolute worst was over!!! Because of the epidural & nerve block, they were able to do my surgery with heavy sedation (I remember nothing, but they even let me listen to music!!!)-so I escaped all the post op nausea & vomiting-I had a tiny bit of nausea. The biggest issue was my blood pressure-it was in the 70’s & 80’s systolic-had a couple of emergency medical responses called (20 med professionals around u in seconds). I was REALLY dizzy lots of the time, close to fainting, but it did get a little better over the course of week 1. I’ve just started week 2-hopefully things will improve!!

I don't blame you for the Dilaudid. I HATE that drug with a passion. That's what they gave me after my tonsillectomy and I actually threw up so much the day of the surgery - which you are NOT supposed to do because it can break the scabs and cause bleeding which then needs to be cauterized. Thankfully, the scabs did not break, but the Dilaudid made me feel sh*tty and, in addition to vomiting, I had dizziness, nausea, lowered heart rate, and lowered BP. I put it on my list of allergies so I never get it again. I don't like Dilaudid or Demerol (I probably should put Demerol on my allergy list since my respiratory drive was severely depressed to the point that the alarm kept going off). Glad your doctors worked with you to find a medication that didn't make you so nauseous. I don't like narcotics at all, but I found that I did well with low dose Vicodin for surgeries (I had it after my first two laparoscopies and the liquid form after my tonsillectomy). I had oxycodone (Percocet) after my endometriosis surgery and I thought it was WAY too strong so I tried to switch to Advil and Tylenol as soon as I could. I tried to request Vicodin instead, but my surgeon said she was concerned that the surgery would cause too much pain and wanted to provide better pain control.

Yeah, this is nothing like that. Imagine nearly every ligament in your knee is shredded, your knee Is severely unstable, and your kneecap isn’t even sitting in the right area...that’s what we have. At least me. The only ligament in my knee that is intact is my tubercle tendon. Even my cartilage is shredded to non-existence. I’ve had this issue for 31 years, since I was ten. It’s like someone hits you in the side of the knee with a hammer, then sticking an ice pick in there and wiggling it around. Basically, horrible.

Do you think the epidural may have contributed to low oxygen, urinary retention, dizziness and nausea? I had quite a few surgeries where epidurals has left me in the ICU longer than expected due to medication administered this way. Heart valves may also be affected with hyper mobility and if toxins regurgitates back into the heart, then the oxygen levels drop. The blood circulation slows down and increase the toxins. Kidneys may malfunction. It happened to me a couple of times. I’m just wondering. Sending you blessings and gentle hugs 🤗

I know when they do surgeries that affect your lower body sometimes it sort of numbs your bladder and you just can't pee. As for pooping that can take days even with laxatives sadly. I think that is one of the worst things about narcotic pain meds. As for the pupil thing I had something similar happen after my neck surgery last year. Did they put a nausea patch behind your ear? They put one on me, and those actually contain an ingredient that is used by eye doctors to dilate your eyes. I was supposed to keep mine on for 3 days and take it off. When I took it off I managed to somehow I guess get some in my eye. So I had just one eye dilated for several days. Which made my vision blurred if I didn't wear sunglasses. It was a crazy freak thing.
