I bought a 2023 Silverado Trail Boss with the Duramax for 60k. It’s an LT but it has everything I want. I can get about 495 miles per tank. Best trip thus far was 31 mpg. Average around town 24-26 mpg with a pretty aggressive tire! Love that inline 6. Great for mileage and torque is impressive! I’m a sucker for Diesel. Have a motor home with a Cummins inline 6 and previously owned a DRW Ram with a Cummins! Great vehicles but I don’t need the large towing capacity anymore so this small Duramax is great around town!

I bought a 6.2 23 Denali. I was originally going for a Trail Boss or AT4 with the duramax but really liked the 6.2 when I drove it. Fuel economy is definitely worse but diesel is over $0.40/L more than gas right now.

What really sucks with truck prices continuously climbing is how much it’s going to affect the people who actually NEED a truck rather than those who buy them as status symbols. The ones who use them for work or their farm or live in a rural area and need the capability of a truck, are going to be soon priced out of a necessity.

Keep in mind that the average salary has increased almost 30% over the last 15 years. That means the cost of everything will go up simultaneously. The trucks come with much much more than they did 15 years ago too. Look at what you got with a 2005-2007 truck from any manufacturer. The difference is huge and the cost for sure is too.

You don't get an at4x for the towing capability. You get it for the off road capability, and luxury features. At4x has suede headliner, nicer leather on seats with messaging feature, front and rear electronic lockers, multimatic dssv shocks, and the steel bumper. AEV get a few more things on top of that. Its essentially a non-chrome denali ultimate, with a lift and lockers rather than chrome, and street wheels and tires. Im not a chrome fan so i like the AT4X better than denali ultimate. However there are things on both i dont need or want really. No one will build a truck the way you want it. Its all packages that have crap tied together.

Always enjoy your videos Andre. I have a 2021 GMC Sierra SLT truck with the 3.0 diesel and love it. I bought it used and it’s in perfect condition. I liked so much we bought a 2023 Tahoe with a 3.0 diesel engine. They 23 Tahoe still had the older version engine but both are awesome vehicles. We get high 20’s for mileage and sometimes over 30 It’s got plenty of power to pass and it’s extremely quiet for a diesel. I they GM really did an excellent job pairing it to the 10 speed transmission. I made my decision on buying the vehicles based on your TFL testing. You and Mr. Truck seem to really like the 3.0. Also GM had a issue with gas engines in half ton segment with lifter issues and 8 speed transmission. Thanks Andre for doing alot of videos on trucks to inform the buyers about trucks. I value your opinion and Mr.Trucks. I also value Nathan’s review when he drove the 3.0 distance review in the Yukon

I have an AT4 with the diesel engine and topper. Average fuel economy is 26 mpg. That's in town, out of town and on the freeway @ 80mph. 31,000 miles on truck. I also have a full size Duramax (2006) both are rock star engines. The 3 liter with 10 speed is excellent combination and have towed with both. 3.0 tows great (6000 lbs max). High marks for that 3.0. I tow 10k to 12k with my 2006 Duramax but find it a rough ride and low mpg for a daily driver.
@shitloveaduck
@shitloveaduck Жыл бұрын
There was a time 80 mph in a 4x4 pickup truck was insane. Still is if you have to make emergency maneuvers. I have responded to many accidents at that estimated speed. Many fatal. Once you loose traction you are in a 6500 lb odd shaped Boulder bouncing rolling down the road. Many fatalities were still buckled in, but the G-forces generated in the end for end flips can be fatal in themselves. For those that say the seatbelts killed them, the accident where people were thrown clear at those speeds were always fatalities in my 30 years. You would have to search for bodies they would fly that far!! This is on east rolling prairies!! If you are in mountain passes?? Well,,,, stupid is as stupid does.

I have 2020 GMC Denali 1500 Ultimate trim 22” wheels with 3.0 with 40k miles and get over 650 miles a tank on road trips. Now that is with a 24 gal tank doing 5 over speed limit. And the best mileage at 50 mile intervals was 36.4 miles per gallon through NC where the speed limit was 65mph. Towing a 1999 accord sedan on a U-Haul car trailer (approximately 5k lbs) I got 17 mpg after 260 miles and towing my GSX-R 1000 on a 5x7 trailer (approximately 1k lbs) I got 22 mpg after 250 miles. I am up and down I95 from FL to VA so flat lands and sea level. Also I refill my def tank once an oil change (around 7500 miles) usually from truck stops. I have my oil changed at 2-0% with factory oil and filter. I have had samples for last three oil changes analyzed by Blackstone oil testing company and they all showed I still had at lest 1500 miles of oil protection left with engine problem indicator. I will continue to randomly get them checked as she gets more miles on her. So when you say your gas truck get 600 miles per tank could you include information above so everyone can compare more evenly. Tank size, truck weight, activity and speed actually matters when someone is thinking of what to buy. We are here to help others not our egos. Example: 600 miles with a 36 gallon tank is approximately 16.7 mpg vs 650 miles from 24 gallons is approximately 27 mpg.

The Trail Boss diesel has a decent payload. You have to learn how to drive with the Eaton Automatic Locking Rear differential, but it’s very effective once you learn the technique. Hint: don’t learn from Andrey. He is too tentative. Nathan runs off-road well with the set up, Tommy is really smooth in his most recent videos where he has learned driving with it, and Kase is getting there. Roman & Alex are also not the best to learn from. The big benefit of it is that you learn steady, constant throttle control to keep it engaged and as a result get pretty darn smooth as far as off-road driving goes.
@killercan10
@killercan10 Жыл бұрын
If you can forgive the lack of the e-lockers but want the diesel, the Custom Trail Boss with the 3.0 Duramax is a much more affordable starting platform. GM sells the DSSVs as a direct upgrade kit for the Trail Boss (and AT4) so you can add those to it. Custom TB should have the highest payload of the off road spec trucks (TB, AT4, ZR2 and AT4X) as it has the least amount of equipment on it so to speak (off road bumpers, lighter tires, less interior options). A Custom TB with the 3.0 Duramax starts at $56,635. The DSSVs and rear spring kit through the accessories catalog is $4495. You get the DSSVs, rear springs and will gain 2 inches of front travel and 1 inch rear travel to a stock Trail Boss or AT4. You can always add bumpers and the extra skids and still will come out much cheaper than the AT4X or ZR2 Bison.

We bought a 2023 Sierra SLT X31 4 wheel drive with the 3.0liter Duramax this past June. We just took it on a road trip from Fort Worth out to Big Bend National Park. The trip computer said that over 1500 miles we averaged 27mpg. That mileage included highway speeds as well as park speeds on flat roads as well as some climbing and descending in the Chisos Mountains. At that MPG, the range of the truck is over 600 miles. Driving in our small town and on highways to and in the Metroplex, I can get an average of 26mpg. This engine, is so quiet, torquey, and mated to the 10 speed transmission, it shifts quickly and effortlessly. Since we don’t tow, I have noted no excessive oil consumption and the 5 gallon DEF tank lasts about 5000 miles. It is a great vehicle for our needs.

Its nice, but any other brand of half ton has a much larger optional tank and so 500 miles is only mediocre. This is doubly true when towing where you can cut that in half or less. I've seen as low as 6.7 mpg towing my travel trailer in my truck, which would probably only be about 8.5 in this thing.

@@Jay-me7gw keep in mind this is a top spec 'off roader'. Given how heavy the truck is compared tp other 1/2 tons, and the big hit in aerodynamics, getting close to 500 miles without towing or hauling on a 24 gal tank is pretty good imo.

The ecoboost I'm my truck gets over 22 mpg highway if i take it easy and with 305 55 20 tires. And even if I run premium gas in it it's still over 50 cents cheaper than diesel. We have a Powerboost F150, so lot of payload is consumed by the battery/motor. We get good mileage thanks to it, but our 1538 payload is already lower than we'd like from a ranch truck/daily driver that tows a lot. South of 1050 for payload is kind of laughable for 1/2 ton. Wouldn't you get a legit offroader for actually going off road? I feel like if you put 4 burly dudes in the truck it's over payload seems nuts.

I see comments on mpg here and just gotta wonder... 40 years of owning trucks,20mpg(US gal) is a pipe dream to me no matter the brand of truck ive owned. Fords,Chevys,Rams it doesnt matter. 17mpg is pretty much as good as it gets. 10mpg towing Wind n hills play its part here but im not hitting 20 over a long average. Anything over 60mph and mpg is definitely toast. And it gets worse if i actually hand calculate as opposed to the lie o meter.

Considered this engine, but I hear you have to use Top Tier fuel, which is not exactly close to me. The additive GM says to use costs $22 for 30 gallons. Seems like that would wipe out any benefit in gas mileage.

It probably just comes down to space. Just don't forget the shocks are tunned to be in that location. If the shocks were moved to the outside of the springs they would not have to work as hard and would be tunned differently.

Neat truck but I really like my '23 F-150 with V8. Easy to get 21mpg on highway and with 36 gallon fuel tank that gives me 756 miles of range. I just run 87 gas and that is a lot cheaper then diesel, in my area. I've also been towing at max 13000 (weight distribution hitch and trailer breaks) and it handles it like a champ. I get 10 or 11 when towing at max tow. My payload is 2507lb. I really do like diesel but I can't justify it with the numbers on this GMC and we didn't even talk about DEF. I suppose the GMC Sierra is better at off road.
