But I'm glad I did because I would listen to them over and over and they hold so many great memories for me now. They were my first introduction to songs you didn't hear on the radio. Seen this video here is bringing back a pretty good memory, that's for sure. Now this is probably going back early 80 sometime and when I was only in the 6th grade. I got three things for my birthday that day. 1. Was a Walkman, 2. Iron maiden somewhere in Time cassette tape and 3. Two packs of AA batteries for my Walkman cassette tape player. I've gotten more than that but these were like the main things. A lot of the other kids in school were surprised that my parents got me something like that, they weren't shocked about the cassette player tape. They were more shocked about the iron maiden somewhere in Time because a tape. But it was all good.

Some of the rarest cassette tapes I've seen on the market are the original Daniel Johnston Cassettes. They're so rare because he would hand make and package each and every one of them. They go for around 200 dollars each (depending on the album).

I’m seriously thinking about becoming a cassette collector. I was a CD collector up until 2 weeks ago and decided to shift to vinyl but I’m finding it way too expensive and it doesn’t bring me much joy tbh. I like the look of cassettes, I’m mainly into 90s music so it won’t be a problem collecting. What do you think? Should I do this??? Any tips and advice

I did this. I inadvertantly found a few dirt cheap good titles at a garage sale a few years ago in London a few years ago which ignited a slight interest in the format I thought was dead. Nowdays however they’ve become more expensive than I thought. Sellers know the value of the ones that are in demand. Another problem is superfans of bands want to own a copy of an album in all format as ornaments which also pushes up prices
@bottomendbliss2 жыл бұрын
Plus cassettes sound really nice on either high or low volume on a good deck. Get into it, theyre fun. You can sometimes find bulk deals really cheap. Iv got vinyl, cd, cassette and mini disk and its fun just picking any media anytime and hearing the difference. Its a tactile thing. Noveltys are very underrated.

@HunterMann4 жыл бұрын
Hi, this is the first I’ve seen of your videos. I really enjoyed this and it was so cool to see the variety of crazy stuff you have found. I’m not surprised about the values of them. Far too many people can’t get beyond thinking that “a cassette is only 50-cents worth of plastic,.” Luckily some of us know it’s the analog audio That is part of the value of the cassette, but also the total presentation of it... from flashy graphics, well-designed packaging, or just some really funky simple packaging: some of them are just so plain and simple, with the Xerox labels of black ink on white, probably printed late at night in a Kinko’s. I used to produce free indie movie nights and we’d print posters at a big 24-hour printing place in a college town. We would come in after midnight and bring the workers a few good coffee drinks. In exchange they would give us a few hundred dollars worth of printing for free, oh hell yeah! What I like about some of your tapes that are very plain artwork and probably noisy irritating music, is that they almost look like a ‘zine in cassette form. By the way, curious if you were a collector of indie zine magazines back in the 80s or 90s? There were some of them that included a cassette tape every month. And then there was one that came with a free CD, I think it was called “cool beans”. Getting back to you and your most admirable collecting of offbeat, rare cassette tapes: I’m curious if you collect “incredibly strange music”, you probably know that genre. There are a few really great books about that type of music. I collect a lot of that on vinyl, I have collected since the early 80s. I was collecting bossa nova & tiki lounge music easily 20 years before anyone realized how cool it was. Perhaps you know of ambient music, geniuses like Brian Eno? His most famous recording is “music for airports”. And then there are records like the moog records, theremin records , hypnotic mood music by the greats like Korla Pandit, Yma Sumac... I think that genre is collected probably a lot more on vinyl than it is on cassettes. Sometimes the music is just OK but the album cover art is out of this world! If nothing else I hope you will check out the amazing music of Esquivel and Martin Denny. And finally, I am a part-time eBay seller and never really paid attention to cassettes much until just yesterday. At a big thrift store I saw that the cassettes were 10-cents each, so I did about an hour of crate digging I and found some real gems. Obscure unknown surf band, a few really bizarre Christian country cassettes from the early 70s, and one of them was a very rare Tijuana Brass cassette worth $28-$58 ! Not bad for 10 cents!!
@MichaelPilmer4 жыл бұрын
Glad to hear from someone else who loves cassettes. Yes I have some Eno and other ambient/strange listening. Love that stuff....Just found Ima Sumac on CD a few days ago for 50 cents at a local thrift. I love the album she released where she covers rock music songs. And yes, I have a great collection of old 80s zines, somewhere in my attic...but not the ones you mentioned. I think I only came across one or two of the cassette zine style mags..but can't remember the details. Anyway, thanks a ton for watching my videos!

I remember a few years ago my father was working at a house in Yucaipa,California. The owner had moved out and there were some stuff left. In I think the attic, there was a box full of a ton of cassettes. My dad volunteered to take it home and he gave them to me. Inside the box of cassettes I found 2 very strange cassettes, one blank and the other one titled: JOHN LONGLEY From: San Bernardino, Ca AT: MENTONE SPEAKERS MEETING 8-20-88. I still have yet to listen to it as I'm trying to get a cassette player to listen to them EDIT: I counted them today and there is 103 cassettes in a aerosol can box

Flaunt It by Sigue Sigue Sputnik was pure, sexual escapism for the teenage mind. No wonder the cover read "Do not play if accompanied by an adult". It was a big favourite with friends at high school in 1986 on cassette. I bought a copy of it in 1988 on CD, which I still have (with a small amount of disc rot but still playable). Amazing that it really was a digital recording as stated at the end.

Hi Michael. Very interesting, you've got me wanting to dig through my old boxes and pull out my DEVO cassettes. I've got some Are We Not and Duty Now... cassettes from the UK and some other mainland European territories that I've not played in decades. I've also got a few of those long pack things, the ones where the cassette was inside a nice presentation box, I think it's Baby Doll or Disco Dancer, can't remember what territory though. There's also a few weird ones that are around Freedom of Choice but have got some odd mixed track lists, I don't think these are official releases and maybe some kind of bootlegs, if I remember correctly one of these was from Saudi Arabia. If there's anything interesting in there I'll let you know once I find them. Cheers, Dave.
