RS-485 was the standard for inverters in 1998. But to still be using this legacy tech in a "new" inverter (a quarter century later) says a lot about how much the companies engineering has really advanced.

I had the same round and round never ending experience with MPP solar engineers with the ground bonding issue when I commissioned my inverters a couple of years ago to the point I gave up and figured it out myself. The idle wattage was already something that disturbed me even on the old version which I have, So that's an awesome find on the new version and wow, terrible! I totally agree with the maximum open circuit voltage being another problem with the older version too. Thanks for the side by side comparison here! Keep up the good work!

My EG4 6500 has a 90W draw at idle. That is inefficient for me but I live with it since I only use it’s for a 120V setup. I just had to add a couple extra panels to the string. Fortunately it’s a 500V MPPT so I can get into the 350-400V range and feel comfortable it’s won’t overload the MPPT input even in colder New England.

I tend to agree if using only 1 inverter. It's when two are used that I think it becomes problematic. I also agree that it doesn't take much to just add a few more panels. If only I wasn't so darn tight on space... My property is angled and tree-ed in a solar-unfortunate way lol.

Thanks for sharing! Yeah, that high consumption is just way too high. I thought the EG4 6500 was bad... Seems like it has to be more than just the fan differences causing the higher consumption. Appreciate you digging into the guts of the units to see what's different. I wonder, can the LV6548 and the LV6548V be run together in split phase? Then you could use 1 inverter to utilize the higher MPPT voltage.

I suspect it has to do with the choice of FETs used. I didn't take it apart far enough to grab the part numbers for comparison; however, that would have to be where the power is being consumed in my non-engineer opinion. The higher CFM fans seem to suggest the same as well.

@@LithiumSolar It would be nice if the fans only came on when the temp got too high or when you draw past a certain load threshold. The higher voltage rating on HV DC capacitor is primarily for margin. They may run the HV DC voltage slightly greater to allow more ripple voltage on HV DC bus. The ripple voltage dip cannot drop below about 200 vdc or it will clip peaks of sinewave AC output. Terrible idle power consumption. You are correct in the greater the inverter's HV DC bus is run, the worse the idle current and worse the inverter efficiency under load will be. It looks like exactly same board used in EG4 6500 inverter. The board below this board with the two toroid coils at the end peeking out from below is the dual MPPT SCC controller. So it looks like MPP Solar LV6548V is same as EG4 6500 unit.

In practise, you don't need to allow for extreme cold and the voltage for unloaded panels. The panel voltages should be under load. Just remember that if you switch off the panels, not to switch the panel feed back on during peak solar hours on a cold day. You can use a voltmeter to verify the total string voltage first. In my opinion, it is better to do this than have maybe one fewer panel in each string.
@LithiumSolar
@LithiumSolar 8 ай бұрын
That is very bad advice. Your system will see open circuit voltage every single morning when the sun is first rising before the controllers kick on and become a load.
@krslavin
@krslavin 7 ай бұрын
@@LithiumSolar I have never seen anywhere near peak open circuit voltages at sunrise, as the sun's rays are nowhere near perpendicular to the panel surface, and sunlight travels through more atmosphere at the start of the day. The variation of the open circuit voltage Voc depends on the logarithm of the light intensity, and for typical silicon cells is from 0.565V for 160 W/m^2 irradiation (typical sunrise) to 0.616V for an irradiation of 1000 W/m^2 (midday). Even before sunrise, the logarithmic Voc of the panels is high enough to start the inverters and put the panels under load. I think you just have to be careful in crunching the numbers to get the maximum out of your system.

OK, I get the idle draw. However, I currently have 24 450W panels, 45V @ 11 amps ea. I have them currently wired in series-parallel (to reduce PV under 250), which hits the LV6548 power limit of 130V X 18 amps per input or 2,340 X 4 or 9,360W theoretical max. To get more power input (with current panels), I would need to add more of the old LV6548=more idle draw. With the LV6548V I can rewire my current panels to straight series and get the full 270V PV at 11 amps or 11,800W input. Better yet I can add 8 more panels for 360V X 11 at 3960 X 4 for 15,840 watts input without rewiring anything. That's 6,480W more input that is way more beneficial to me than battery draw. I live in Central Florida. So what am I missing? This seems like a massive win?

I loved the side by side comparison. That’s a shame about the idle consumption. That is just way too high in my opinion. If in need of more pv, people would be better off using the original models coupled with a quality charge controller. As far as communications, it just doesn’t really seem to matter. More crap to go wrong with those. Go for lf inverter. There can be very reliable modular setups for everyday power needs and high demand applications. Just requires a large low voltage to 120 240v transformer. egs002 work well, use or make a choke with thiick wire, and less turs. get a toroidal core to fit about 10 turns of thick wire going to the transformer. egsoo2 boards work well. And buy them without mosfets, to then put your own high quality mosfets in. Companies should sell modular modified improved kits.

@@LithiumSolar I wish I knew. One 48v system couldn’t make the absorb voltage required (when you included the temp compensation). Another system would go straight to float when it reached adsorb voltage. The absorb time, according to the manual, is calculated as 10x the CC period so if it took 2 hours to get to absorb, the absorb period would be 20 hours so the batteries would never go to float. From what I’ve seen, I would never use them on a FLA battery. If this charging algorithm is used on LFP batteries, I can’t imagine it being very good for them either.

I have a lv 6548 and you know what? I hate it it works great but it is soooo loud it makes an awful noise all the time. Unless your systems room is a mile away you will hear this pos screaming all night.
