There probably are more, maybe even a way to move them manually at some point, but afaik you can only choose how many are played. Mostly by accounts of length of the video. I know TLDR News is against Brexit but their videos on average are fairly neutral, this one however was quite biased. You failed to mention that Johnson was forced to request an extension by Parliament, therefore tying his hands, whilst at the same time conveniently glossed over the fact that Corbyn changed his mind about the election because he knew the bill had the necessary support and was going to pass whether Labour liked it or not. It was a politically expedient change of heart on their part, the justification Corbyn gave doesn't hold up, just a few days earlier when the EU had already agreed to the January 31st extension he stated that in order for Labour to support an election "No Deal" had to be COMPLETELY off the table.

The Bill was going to pass whether Corbyn abstained or actively voted against it - He was left with a choice of going into an election having not voted for one, which would have been great election material for the Conservatives, or jumping before they were pushed and backing the election to save face.

The committee stage is overseen by the Chairman of Ways and Means aka the deputy speaker.
@cnocbride72565 жыл бұрын
All bills in the UK Parliament go through the committee stage. The Finance Bill and many important bills go through what is called a committee of the whole house. This is where the entire House is considered part of the committee instead of the usual select committees that are made up of selected MPs to scrutinize bills. This is often for important bills that will have a big effect on the country and as the early general election will it was put to the whole house. The committee of the whole is not chaired by the Speaker by convention but by the deputy speakers, mainly the Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee (Deputy Speaker). They do not sit in the chair and instead sit at the clerk table.

What I don't understand is ... if the FTPA requires a 2/3 majority of all MPs in order to call an early general election ... but the government (or opposition) can table a one-line bill that amends the FTPA in order to call an early general election, and which only needs a simple majority to pass ... does that make the FTPA the most pointless bit of legislation ever?
@johanneskarlsson38595 жыл бұрын
Not relly, but sort of, the one line bill can be amended so for exampel 16 year old can vote and so on. FTPA do not give that rom. Sorry for the bad english.

Why do you have to think for some else then? I'd hoped that - no matter on which side of the isle - we all could agree on high and informed voter turnout. And by combining this wish with your opinion on how to see the current situation, you change a universal accepted fact into a controversy, for no reason at all.

As a person who lives in Sweden, what was the "committee stage" and what was the pint of lowering the mace, (and what is so special about the mace and its position)
@itshitime5 жыл бұрын
The mace is the symbol of the monarch giving power to parliament Dont Sweden have royal traditions in parliament
@TheChewyApple5 жыл бұрын
The committee stage give MPs an opportunity to examine the bill line by line and debate the finer details of a bill. Committees are usually held in separate committee rooms, but for important bills it is held in the chamber and is referred to as the Committee of the Whole House. The mace is placed on the table when the House is sitting and represents the Queen’s authority for the House to sit. When the House is in committee, it technically isn’t sitting as the House of Commons, so the mace is lowered to signify this

So how did Corbyn rationalize being against the election on Monday but for it on Tuesday? The EU extension was agreed last week. Nothing has changed on that front.
@AaronOkeanos5 жыл бұрын
A general election via FTPA allows the prime minister to change the election date after the parliament has dissolved. And FTPA does not allow amending. Johnson could have moved the general election past Jan-31 the same trick he tried to use twice already. Johnson could use a normal motion he tabled after loosing the first try on monday evening for tuesday as well, but he was too cowardly to do so. He even tried to smuggle an amendment in which removes being able to add amendments. Johnson is an untrustworthy politician.

If you were to tactically vote to make sure the Tories don't have a majority and perhaps secure another referendum what would be the best party to vote for and would it even matter so long as it wasn't Tory? Could you maybe do a video on what would happen if there was surge in votes toward snp, green, lib dem eating into the main 2 parties share? Like what happens if the Tories have a majority, and what happens if the other parties team up, and if that's even possible to defeat a Tory majority? Or is a majority a clear win?
@bisaVCI5 жыл бұрын

@AnonEyeMouse5 жыл бұрын
@Aaron Giles If THAT were true, he wouldn't have won so convincingly and inspired such a surge in membership. Part of the genius of the Blairite take over was to bond with the press so heavily. It's both horrific and fascinating to watch how Corbyn has had his character sullied by supposedly left wing Blairite media. The rank and file have Corbyn's back. You can only ignore the urge for justice for so long before the people surge forth. Corbyn is portrayed as a 'crazy socialist' by the media. He's just the figurehead. The leader who speaks to the goals of the people. Get rid of him and we just get another socialist to lead OUR party. We've had almost four decades of push to the right, chasing capitalism to its extremes and complete neglect of anywhere in the country that isn't the South East. One of the problems of pushing the political discourse further and further to the right is to leave more and more people to the left of the Westminster group think. A correction is inevitable, are sorely needed.
