Mr AMG on the New 8 Series! BMW’s Flagship Sports Car!

BMW’s New Flagship Sports GT!! Welcome back to RBR guys! It’s been a 1 month hiatus since we last presented some cars and magic to you, and ironically Mr AMG starts the year with Munich’s new Flagship Top Model, the revival of the 8 Series!
But I know what you’re thinking, this is just marketing speak right? Isn’t it a direct replacement of the previous 6 Series coupe? Well yes! And No. You see it’s a little more complicated than a Badge Change. Let’s explore with our usual VFX how the outgoing 6 Series compares to this 8 Series, in both shape and purpose.
Indeed if I said 8 series previously, you’d immediately think of the legendary E31 8 Series, a car we much also explore, along with it’s origins!
BMW refer to it as a Sports Car, rather than a GT. And their goal was “Thrilling driving dynamics” By putting their best technology and developments of Body, powertrain and suspension - and provide agility, precision and poise expected of a top-class sports car. On the full drive, we’ll explore whether it has the right to be called a sports car.
We’ll also see how the diesel fares, and where it sits in the line up vs the m850i and upcoming M8. And speaking of the M8, we have a tasty M8 render and some other surprises too. :)

There is no way this car can go up against the Aston's the Bentley's the S Coupe's or the 911's, it just does not have the street presents to me of those "and Others" available at that price range. I am a BMW enthusiast and this 8 series just looks too much like an upgraded 6 series. From a distance many people couldn't tell the difference, which you cant say about the previous ones i mentioned. It's just not UNIQUE enough... Shame.

I own a 6 series and honestly it looks the same. Sure different lights, diffusor and stuff but the body design is still 6. Looks damn good.

Omar H dude. This has nothing to do with Chinese screens. Just admit Mercedes engineers think outside the box. If I’m paying over 100k for a car in 2019, the interior better match the price tag. This interior looks like a corolla. I understand bmw focus more on driving and performance but Jesus their interiors just suck. They are like 2000 years behind everybody

You touched on one point that really appeals to me, and that is BMW have taken the bold decision not to make every successive model bigger than the last. Indeed many new models immediately rule themselves out for me because they are just ridiculously supersized and make the drivers look like Ronnie Corbett is behind the wheel... And although their design dept are currently getting a lot of stick I think this is a really attractive shape too, particularly in this colour.

I enjoy your thorough consideration of the cars. The Maserati GT is I believe in its last year of production, and gets little attention from the automotive press. Certainly a superior car in terms of beauty, and also practically well conceived. I would like you to turn your eye on the Gran Turismo as a performance/GT car, is it respectable, or does it fall short? If you contacted Maserati, I think they'd give you the assent.

The original 8 Series was a starship, with a striking design. Loved it and still do. Saw one yesterday and it still has the wow factor. This current incarnation is just vanilla to look at. It does nothing over and above a 6 series, and so for me, is a missed opportunity to make an impact as the original did.

As BMW owner I’m disappointed with the interior of this car, i think bmw have dropped the ball with their new interiors. They all look very similar and with the price tag of this vehicle is has hardly any wow factor internally. Exterior is very nice though. I hope the new m4 doesn’t end up like this.

I’m on my 8th bmw, I currently own the M4 be honest when you compare the interior of the m4 to rs4 or Audi it really looks dated. I remember my early 320ci e46 had better interior for at that point in time. Mercedes and Audi have overtaken bmw interior.

@@THTRT I think bmw f30 interior is very much on par with audi a4 b9. I hate these"sporty" flat bottom steering wheels that looks so tachy in audis, you used to put them in cars where you could not come out because of the leg room, now you can have one in A6.

DuBstep115 I had the 420D then brought the m4 if it wasn’t for the full leather upgrade option to wrap the dash. It would have looked exactly the same. I agree the circle steering wheel is better. Have a look at porches Cayenne interior it oozes luxury, Alcantara roof lining, chrome finish details analogue clock in the centre etc. very nicely done. There’s just something missing with these new beamers although I would be hard pressed to ever go to the dark side and buy a merc

Great and thorough review, and I love this channel but.. please be honest and give full disclosure. The reason you chose to review the M840D in stead of the M850i is because it wasn't for you to choose! Don't pretend it was you making that choice. BMW is giving this car to be reviewed by influencers before they give the M850i. I´ve seen a similar review by Matt Watson (Carwow) also reviewing the 840D because that´s what BMW gives. It´s decided by the Marketing department of BMW. (sidenote: it is surprising they focus on the Diesel since diesel is under a lot of negative press due to environmental concerns)

@Remove Before Race You mentioned that this car doesn’t have any competitors on the market. But I’d just like to say that you can get off with a Mercedes E400d 4matic+ Coupé, which has more HP than the 840d, gives you more interior space (which is very disappointing in the 8series) and saves you 35.000€ as well. Maybe it’s just me, but this is a 840d competitor through and through.

I delivered a 740D M and covered just under 200 miles. Obviously, it was a really nice car and supremely comfortable at cruising, but I seriously don’t think that it’s worth the money. Maybe this is because I couldn’t afford it, so I’m looking at the proposition from a different angle. Envious glances and nods of approval were plentiful and frequent

It’s disappointing we are not getting the M8 concept that everyone loved. What happened? I’ve been a strong BMW fan because of the driving experience but I’m slowly moving over to Mercedes, they’re setting the benchmark on interior and overall cohesion. I’ll take the AMGT - 4 63s over any bimmer
