The answer is zero. They've both already washed the car once each. It doesn't need to be washed again for a third time.

They divide the car in half. Fred washes his half in 4 minutes. Al finishes his half in 3 minutes and then goes buy an ice cream and poke fun at Fred for the remaining one minute
@nathanieljefferies549110 ай бұрын
I honestly wish they chose something more philosophical rather than an Algebra work problem cause those only have one answer or in the way they complicatedly explained it, a quadratic or even cubic equation since those actually have more than one answer.
@johnnybravado71412 ай бұрын
It's the theory of everything. The results are determined by the choices you make and because there are so many choices the results are not necessarily predictable because they're not always the same.
@TimpossibleOne4 жыл бұрын
Approximately 3-1/2 minutes If one can wash it in 8 minutes and the other in 6 minutes then the average per car is 7 minutes but with 2 of them together that time is halved.
@notmakingcontent4 жыл бұрын
Wrong. The correct answer is that there isn't one.
@opiet80814 жыл бұрын
Correct. And even more specifically it's about 3 minutes and 26 seconds.
@presidentskroob Жыл бұрын
@@opiet8081 not necessarily. The problem just said they wash the car together. How they split the work up will cause the time to vary. This problem has no solution because there’s not enough information to derive an answer.
@manifestman13210 ай бұрын
In the real world 6 min guy will pick up the pace because he is working with 8 minutes guy and 8 may or may not slow down might even speed up to prove himself.

If it's a math problem, there is one and only one right answer. 3 and 3/7 min as others have pointed out. The only way to have multiple answers is to make it a social or behavioral question instead of a math one.
@Claire-tz8yl Жыл бұрын
The way its phrased makes it more of a social question in my opinion. There's no details to get a correct mathematic answer. It's just easy to assume work is split evenly. The maths answer can change depending on if they split the work evenly or if one did more work than the other. If we assume work split evenly then it would take 4 minutes. Since one person cleans half in 3 minutes but it takes 4 for the other person. So 4 minutes total. It would take less than 4 minutes though if the Al helps Fred after completing his half.
@mrfeenysfence Жыл бұрын
@@Claire-tz8yl Maybe they drive through a car wash?
@thefighter5182 Жыл бұрын
Maybe they both were washing the car and the correct answer is 3.43 minutes.
@hydrelisk5 ай бұрын
The truth is the way the problem is stated there is not enough information to give one definitive answer. It is not stated that their speed for cleaning the car is homogeneus or, as a weaker hypothesis, that their relative speed ratio is the same across all parts of the car cleaning.

@davidhughes468910 ай бұрын
you still don't get the point of what he was trying to teach them Corey was right based on the law of averages (8+6) /2 =7 2 being the number of people assuming that they washed the car together? But what the teacher wanted them to understand was that there is not always one right answer there is always another way to see a situation in the world of education they teach you to find an answer to what ever question your asked but in the real world there can be more than one way to do things or no way to do that thing at all.
@miw14programmer1110 ай бұрын
Assuming both wash the same car and start at the time. Al washes 1/6 of the car is washed per minute. Fred washes 1/8 of the car is washed per minute. So it would be 1/6(x)+1/8(x) = 1 car. Where we would find x which equals time. x = 24/7 or about 3.43 minutes. I think this is it.

14 minutes. Al washed the car in six minutes, Fred washed the ‘same’ car in eight, that’s fourteen minutes total. They were already washing it ‘together’. He never said how much of the car they each washed in those minutes. It may have not been at the same time, but they were already working together. This isn’t just a math story problem, it’s a math riddle with the wordplay. The words come before the numbers.

Al washes the car at 1/6th of the car per minute. Fred washes the car at 1/8th of the car per minute. Al and Fred working together must take the same amount of time to wash the car. Let's denote this time as t. So t times Al's time plus t times Fred's time = 1 whole car washed. So t(1/6) + t(1/8) = t(1/6 +1/8) = t(8/48 + 6/48) = t(14/48) = t(7/24) = 1. Therefore t = 24/7 or little under 3.5 minutes. I think that's the actual answer.

There is a right answer, and the easiest way to work it out is to let each of them wash half the car and go with the time it takes for the one who takes longer so 4minutes and the other one can sit around for 30 seconds. Also 8min to wash a car is ridiculously quick and either of these guys could with the olympics or car washing. They're faster than a robotic car was and at the going average rate here in NZ of $15 per robotic wash could be earning $112.50/hr washing cars.
