How a high school ended up with Mr. Feeny is beyond me. You’d expect to find someone like him at an Ivy League college.
@gnirolnamlerf593
@gnirolnamlerf593 2 жыл бұрын
Except he wouldn't really be needed at an Ivy League College. He was needed, and teachers like him are needed at average high schools to teach the kids that they aren't average. They are all special and all have something special to contribute to the world, if they'd only believe in themselves and not be let down by adults. As a teacher who just retired after 48 years of teaching because I (obviously) reached retirement age, not because I had any desire to quit, I cry every time I watch the final scene of BMW. Feeny's final four pieces of advice are the best pieces of advice any teacher could give (brilliant writers). I used them on the last day of my last class. Shawn's "You never gave up on me. Not once," is the greatest compliment a student can give a teacher.

This man is so knowledgeable and wise. He knows things that some people never figure out in life. I've always wondered what he had to go through to learn such life lessons. Did he read it or experience it? Was it both? The fact that he married so late in life shows us some insight.

I firmly believe that there is so much value in having the same teacher for, at the very least, one for each level (1-5, 6-8, 9-12) but I think having the same teacher for all of your k-12 career could genuinely work incredibly well. I mean in the 4 main disciplines of math, science, history and English. Elective courses in middle and high school obviously would be taught by different people and advanced classes available for gifted students in a given subject if they require such to reach the full potential. Having a long term teacher would nurture strong mentor-pupil bond and having a good understanding of your students strengths and weaknesses would allow for more individualized schooling. Unfortunately, there's many teachers that aren't very good and thus, makes this a hard concept to implement.

We had a Mr Feeny. His name is Mr Tindall. He was our shop teacher in high school. He knew everyone and everyone knew him. My HS years were 2002-2006. Today we had a celebration of life for a fellow friend/old classmate who tragically took his own life at just 33 years old. Tindall was there. In his 90s now. He got himself up on stage, walker n all, and gave the most beautiful speech to us. This get together was like a HS reunion. It's been nearly 20 years since we all graduated. We live in a small town and we all see each other around sometimes or on social media...but coming together for our friend and loved one, and seeing Tindall stand up there and recognize all of us from nearly 2 decades ago as well as memories of Curtis and his friends and others that were there from all those years ago was incredible. He gave a fuck. He let people cry on his shoulder. He gave the tough love to people. This small town is a little bubble and the opioid epidemic hit our city so hard when we all hit HS. Tindall knew a lot of the students were going through hard shit at home or at school or in their overall personal life.....and he gave everyone a safe space to trust an adult who would actually help them through. He didn't coddle people. He gave love and kindness where necessary and he loved everybody like they were his own. It was absolutely amazing to see him today. He spoke so well. We cried with him and laughed with him. Everyone wanted to talk to him when mingling began. Showing off their babies, wives, husbands, etc. He was proud of everyone and so excited to see all of us grown up and doing our best. I told him he made an impact and he changed/saved a lot of lives during his career and we both smile-cried together. It was a beautiful moment. He said that's all he ever wanted. Well Mr T, you succeeded. Thank you to all the Tindalls and Feenys out there. We need more teachers like you. 🥺🤍

Feeny's perception lesson speaks to me. My boss belittled me because I'm a slow learner who _seems_ incompetent alone (I have a learning disability and have made mistakes at work). She said she didn’t think I could do a coffee service alone and was all "I've told you not to sign up for shifts by yourself, I've been very clear about that, I don't know how much clearer I can get for you to listen". And then she told me l need someone there to give me instructions and guide me. I want to prove her wrong so badly, and make her out to be an idiot. I'd rather be that one "loser" people don't believe in...than be a part of that shameless crowd. There's no shame in being wrong...unless you're wrong about someone's abilities.

When you're a teenager, that lesson about not letting other dictate who you are can be a very hard lesson to accept. I don't think it's a hard lesson to learn at that point in life, but it's hard to accept. When I was a teenager, I knew deep down that I shouldn't let others dictate who I was, but it was very hard to accept that and actually apply it to my life. I wanted to be accepted. I wanted to be liked. It can be hard to balance those wants with the wisdom of not letting others dictate who you are.
