I thought it was perfect to what the show portrayed Gilbert and the Mum as. Gilbert is self explanatory as he fancied Will's mum and hated Will and his Mum was, aside from the odd instance of actually being a good mum, one of the worst, most nasty characters to Will in the show, always paying him backhanded insults and humiliating him like he's a loser, making up lies as to why he had to leave private school because she couldn't afford it when the Dad left. I thought it was perfectly in character for her to be so obliviously cruel, even after Gilbert laughed his ass off about Will in the office, one of his mum's actual good moments.
