We remodeled our truck camper and pulled out every bit of propane. Replaced with reasonable solar and ability to charge while driving. We went with a chinese diesel heater. Spent a winter out west exploring with it. Zero problems and we will never, ever go back to propane.

🤔 availability and ease of getting your fuel. I can get diesel anywhere but not propane. Small towns don’t have propane for filling tanks. Propane is explosive! Diesel is not. 10 hours of use only used approximately a half a gallon of diesel. Battery consumption on 5KW diesel heater over 10 hours was 200 watts. Only maintenance needed is to turn the heater on high before turning it off for a few minutes. No soot issues. Diesel heater $150 propane hheater like you’re talking about was $1000. In a moving vehicle or rig there’s a lot of twisting and bumps and if you get a leak of propane 😱… Use at your own risk.😉

Thanks for your comments. For some diesel makes perfect sense. In my case I have a tiny trailer and already have propane for the stove. I did not want to add a second fuel type to the rig especially liquid. I agree you can get propane or diesel heater for less money. At those price points quality is pretty poor. There are plenty of videos around showing problems and failures with cheap heaters. The high quality diesel heaters cost as much or more than my heater. My heater is essentially maintenance free. If you watch the diesel maintenance videos you will get an idea of the care a diesel needs. My energy consumption numbers for running the glow plug show a much higher energy consumption for diesels when the glow plug is running. You can find this data too on line. There are about as many diesel fires as propane fires. Both need common sense care. I have yet to visit an area of the USA that does not carry propane. It is a VERY common home heating fuel especially in remote places. I agree - do your research and pick what meets your needs best. We have 2 diesel heaters, love them, no smoke, but you do have to use them properly. 180 degrees of dry heat. Draws heavy on start up but then goes down to an amp or two when full run mode. One we have kept outside all winter so far with a cement mixer plastic thing for a cover lol but worked great for what we needed. Living in a camper while we finish the cabin and we put the heater hose into the 'skirting'' I made from foam board, heats the under tanks and pipes so I can drain them daily to sewer tank. We use electric heater in living room of camper to help it not be fully moistened by the propane heat. Electric assist helping a lot with keeping sweat down on windows and walls, and keeps dogs warmer out there to sleep, wind just still slides right thru the slider edges out there.

I use a Little Buddy in my add-a-room attached to my Mini Mate tent trailer. Usually I'll only run it for an hour or so before bed and again for a couple of hours in the morning. Yes, they are expensive to run and condensation is a real nuisance. But for size and convenience, it's really my only option I think.

The trouble with diesel heaters compared to propane heaters is less about heater construction and more about an innate property of the respective fuels. Propane is proportionally more hydrogen and less carbon, which is why it boils at a much colder temperature and also why it burns cleaner, particularly in thermostatic applications that require cycling. Diesel has a lot more carbon in it, which is why it's less volatile and less of a fire hazard, but also why it has a higher propensity to release soot (unoxidized carbon,) particularly when it is run intermittently rather than full time as it would be in either a diesel or jet engine. My vote is to keep diesel in the tow vehicle as the most efficient provider of torque, and propane in the trailer where it produces clean heat without a fuss.

Very useful chat about heat . I don't have experience with diesel heaters but conversations with a boat system dealer indicated that dusty conditions would be problematic. Personally I do travel on dusty desert roads in my travels.

Love your heater comparison, you are good with your numbers! Once I get such nice date I can't keep my legs still... So we... did just put some math/ facts together after 2 weeks of Boondocking in the alps at 1800 m above sea level, partially snow fall, but over all sunny, day temps 1-- (-) 3 Degree Celesius,( 30 f) night temps av. - 10 degree C and colder (- 18 max) We had 4 Riggs up there: Rigg 1 Alde propane heating sysrem 6 kw on gas plus 3 kw when hooked up or via inverter, Rigg is 8 m long and has a cab chassis Class C types ( insulated, by outside insulation mattes) Fuel supply by 2 x 11 kg Propane bottles ( 3 carried in spare) 50 pounds 2 botts. Day heater via solar and Lipfos and 500 watt El heater plus sun Rigg 2 Alde propane heating system as above 3020 hp plus with a 33 kg Propane tank and 2 x 11 bottles to switch, Rigg is 9 m long class A RIigg 3 Alde heating system, plus diesel warm water heater in Alde loop ( these Aldes work with convectors and glycol)..33 kg Gastank, plus spare 11 kg bottles and 140 L Dieseltank. For rapid heating this Rigg has an Webasto ( Ce sign) Diesel heater as well 2 kw. ( 9m long, Class A) Rigg 4 Class C with Truma propane heater ( like Propex but 4 kw) amp draw 1,4 amp when steady state heating plus Propane per hour Rigg is 6 m long. Data review ( Feb/March 2020, 14 days at Livignp) The 7 m Rigg1) used 25 kg Propane for 2 weeks ( Fri - Fri) due to solar the batt was always full mid day..amp used was about 1 amp steady state 45!.- Euros 14 days Heat ( ser at 20 C Inside) plus large refrigerator ( 74 g/h) Rigg 2 used 44 kg (72 Euros) of Propane for the same due to the lenght its more, Batts on 80 % since they are Agm he has solar 130g/h propane Rigg 3 used 22 kg of Propane and about 10 L ( 46 Euro) Diesel it is 9 m long means incl refrigerator and set to 22 C inside Amp draw 1 amp Alde, and 0,8 amp Webasto diesel heater when running. Webasto takes 0,1 L Diesel per hour ( and yes sometimes you can smell it but No smoke, he used it about 30 % of the time) Batts no issue he has 400 Ah installed and solare Rigg4 Gas heater 4 kW used 33 kg Propane ( 54 bucks) and needed to go on grid every second day ( batt is 85 Amp Gel) 1,4 Amp/ h * 40 is already critical since he can only consume 50 % of his batt cap. ( the small propane heater needs to run at low all time) ( 98 g/h)" Here my 2 cents: The smaller the Rigg it may be best to use a small propane blower heater like a Propex,,Truma, Dometic or others, cheap price around 400 -800 bucks, low amp 1,4 and super low gas consumptionm ( specially trailers) Medium Riggs should have a water heating system ( winter) or a gas propane blower heater such as a Truma combi best combined with a 12 - 230 V thinfilm floor heater, such combination allows a 7 m Rigg 10 days with 7 kg Propane ( tested in the same area / my previous Rv) Larger Riggs should have a combination of warm water propane heating system plus a 2-4 kw diesel heater ( homologated ones with Ce logo, no Far East ones if safety is a concern to the owners) tapped from the fuel tank ( cost is 500-1000 Euros) Alde heating system is about 10 k Euros (6-10 kW) ( including hotwater and convectors and motor pre heat or heat cabin with engine heat while driving down the road Truma Combi 3 k Euros (4-6 kW incl hot water) Truma and others simple airheater 800-1000 Euros (1-2,8 kW) Diesel air heaters good / approved ones 500-1000 Euro or more ( 0,8 -1,8 kW or 0,8-4 kW).. Prefer a 1,8 kW heater which runs on low 24/7.. Diesel water heaters around 500 bucks ( only suitable if you have convectors in your Rv Electrric heaters 2 -3 Amps abour 50 -300 bucks Some idea. - Max amp draw 1 amp is OK or you need bigger batteries ( I do have a 160 Ah Lipfos whith quick charge option with 60 Amps) - Winter heating system need to run 24/7 on low to keep the sanitary system protected - All tanks and plumbing is in a double floor construction heated - Hourly conumption of fuel 0,1 L ( or kg in case) max about 0,4 L - Solar recommended 1:1 or 1:2 ( batt to pv) - Power back up like generator ( 1 for all Riggs) or hydrogen fuell cell ( efoy comfort or others) for 3-4 days no sun - For extrem situations a big buddy or similar Summary propane heating systems are very efficient and are small and light draw little power even on larger Riggs 1 amps/h plus power consumption!! ... but the more energy would be needed a supplemental diesel heater makes sense when you have a fuel tank.( or install a 4 gal steeltank underbelly in a Trailer or on the hitch) In warm weather like spring and fall a diesel heaters can produce all warmth by a minimal amount of fuel without maintenance Good heaters are as reliable as any propane or other Rv heaters. Diesel cost is In euro about 1,20 / Liter where as Propane is 11 kg 18- 20 Euros Heat values like 12 kw/ kg is pretty similar. Some people do not like diesel smell on one hand ( my rigg is a diesel anyhow) and others want to camp on higher altitude Here you neee an elevation conversion kit on many heaters..or they don't run properly..well we learned it the hard way.. All systems reviewed where running trouble free for years, the water pump thermostat on Rigg 2 failed and the heater did not forward the warmth, so we needed to cut the 12 v supply to the pump and made a spare wire from a 12 v point then heater did run thru out Regards from a non responsible diesel heater fan and his camping friends recently camped in the snow and all watch Cosmo.. ( I may refurbish my rigg with a 2 kw planar 2 D expedition heater after I saw and we learned how this works..in our case helpful) Forgive us our findings!? The 4 Riggs you can see on one of my last vacation vids..

Update for the records, I mutated from a non responsible diesel heater fan to a diesel heater owner..and installed a Diesel heater 2 kW from Russia " planar 2 D expedition heater with elevation kit and 7,5 L diesel tank into my Rv...........now 2 weeks of tests showed: low setting is good for heating a 7,7 m Class C rigg ( its a 2 Kw version) and keep it toasty all day long.. DATA: 1) it takes from 0,5 amps low to 1,1 amps on high setting. ( times working hours = Ah used) 2) it works at 30 dB low to 37 dB high noise level 3) it has a temp sensor " in the cabin" so it will not heat all time since automatic heats to a set value which I set on 22 C ( super cozy) 4) it burns average a 90 -100 ml Diesel per hour ( my 24 h test was little under 2 L 5) it burns smoke and odor less ( only when start up you may notice some smell out side for a max of 5 min) 6) my solar charger will detect the dieselheater draw and feed amps accordingly so no ah draw during day light ( 10 hour night draws literally about 5 -6 Ah, depending upon outside temp, system was tested at 2 degree C last 2 weeks) 7) its a simple solution with 2 knobs..and a setting dial for temp and fan speed 8) its a quick dismantle type of heater and glow plug, burn chamber or other items can be exchanged in minutes 9) maintenance: let it run 1 hour fully crancked per week when you operated it 24/7 Summary: with the installed 7,5 L Tank and a small solar 190 wp Mt Cis pv panels and 160 Ah Lifephos set up, you can boondock and heat all week, that allows to use my propane for the refrigerator and cooking, hot water for a long stretch..means 11 kg of propane will last all spring at least and for weekend trips I may need to refuel the diesel tank once per now and then..I think a great add for freedom and independence! But the Alde Propane hot water radiation and floor heating system is still greatly appreciated for winter camping, but now with much lower consumption..the diesel helps to save propane greatly!

I guess the old saying is true, you get what you pay for.Enjoyed video. i have a palamino truck camper with factory forced air heater/thermostat i added a wave 3 and use it when i have no hook up, low on or need to conserve 12 volt. the wave heater dose generate some moisture but its better than being cold when u have low power. with smaller rv s you cant add a lot of batteries due to weight .and as im sure you will agree that us folks with small rv ,s are always mindful of conserving our 12 volt power.

Regarding humidity, on boats I have used products such as a "GoldenRod®" which generates less than 150° F if you use shore power, they require 110 volt power (8 watts or more depending on length), or Dri-Z-Air dehumidifying crystals - no power needed (Calcium Chloride anhydrous, which you can also buy from a chemical warehouse/supplier). Anyone ever use them in campers/trailers? Regarding diesel heaters, I like that the unit can be housed/mounted outside, and they the air intake and exhaust (for the heater), can also be routed or mounted outside, with only the heated air being recirculated inside. Some folks do install them with the heated air intake outside to constantly draw in fresh air. Depending on where you are that could draw in moist air as well. If you are handy (and careful) there are 12 volt incandescent light bulbs, you could build a small container/holder, a super low wattage one might be ideal if "some" light doesn't bother you, if it does, perhaps a 12 volt resistor with? It It's a balancing act.

Hi Dougster.m Thanks for your solutions, they may be useful for many viewers. For me each one adds a layer of complication to camping. I recommend the Propex HS-2000 its very small and can be tucked into almost any van or RV if the 6500 BTU output is adequate. Diesels require maintenance I don't care to do for the glow plug and carbon build up - you can find plenty of videos about how to do that. kzbin.info?search_query=diesel+heater+maintenance. In my case the deal breaker was adding another fuel to my trailer. My trailer is small and I already have propane. Adding diesel fuel was not something I was interested in. We are fortunate to have so many great choices available to us. Electric solutions are limited for me since I camp off grid 99% of the time. Thanks for your ideas. Chemical solutions are fine but my heater does not create moisture so I am free of that cost and moisture. Careful using calcium chloride to dehumidify spaces. While it's a great salt that will happily scrub every molecule of water from the air and can be recharged to anhydrous in an oven, it's so aggressive that it will dissolve itself into a brine and can potentially cause a mess. In a tray inside your safe at home, it's fine to have a pack that eventually becomes a brine. On the road, that sloshy stuff can be disastrous.

I have a different mr heater ,I have a hose that hooks to a bulk tank ,I use a 20 lbs tank, easier than refilling the little bottles. If I someday order a vistabule, I’m just getting the Propex and I’ll use the mister heater in the kitchen,but I’ve been looking for an enclosed canopy or a tent for the kitchen, and a tent with a stove jack for a small wood stove would be even better and cheaper,there’s a lot of wood in the state and national forest here in Wisconsin and that’s without cutting trees down, just a thought.

I love people who dont burn wood! I dont make fires. Vistabule Propex Hs2000 is a great heater. Many Vistabule owners use a clam shelter and have a door added to the side so they can put the shelter over the kitchen and get in from the side. The small wood stoves are a cool idea but anyone who uses one will tell you you will be up several times in the night to tend it because the box is small. They prefer it more for daytime use when it's no problem to refill it every 3 hours or so.

ya propane is tuff,,,, it costs a fortune,, as well,, and 20% is unusable so if you have a 400 lbs or a 20 lbs 20% of that propane will not be able two be used it will be lost in the process .. of use that is..

Can you please explain your knowledge about the ventilation requirements for the heaters? I was under the impression Mr heater and other buddy heaters couldn’t be used inside a tent or teardrop without the door open. That using one whilst sleeping was dangerous? Also, have you tried low voltage electric blankets running off USB or batteries?

jbaass As a person who is highly sensitive to radiation, I found one phone I had was causing my heart to palpitate when the phone came near it. As I'd had two strokes already the phone found home in the woodstove. Electric blankets emit large amounts of radiation so I just caution you to consider this.

Only special groups/people (Trevor King Aug. 25,2020 is an online free documentary 5G/EMF) will tell you the truth because all the other companies are making BILLIONS of $$. Most folks don't know how it is really affecting our bodies and how our systems work. Every night I unplug my router and anything that sends or receives information via WiFi. Heaters using fuel of some sort is the only way to go.

The Mopeka propane level reader has one major drawback for me. It requires a cell phone signal. I often camp in the middle of no where and there are no towers. Maybe Starlink will solve that.

The $200 Chinese diesel heater while efficient is total crap. Its a breakdown yearly. I've had mine for two seasons and ready to chuck it. Right now its not working again. Didn't pull it apart yet but pretty certain the glow plug went again. Would gladly pay double and stay with diesel if was american made.

Thanks I found so many complaints about them I wanted to open the conversation. I get lots-O-ccomments from from people telling me how great they are FROM PEOPLE WHO DONT OWN THEM!!! I found John Mck 47 to be an incredible resource for diesel heaters. He has information on every aspect of maintenance including a 13 part tutorial. Cosmo I think you've KZbind me into a Propex heater, but when I go to the Westyventure site you list it directs me to VanCafe.com. So the question is do you get any Brownie points from VanCafe or any other another Propex dealer? Robert

Hi Robert. Propex it tops. I know many who own it and none have had any problems. I will be camping near the Canadian border in Oct (temps are already in th3 20s at night) and the Propex keeps me nice and cozy at night. I dont get any points from either distributor. Do you have electrical consumption for the propex for 10hrs? My diesel uses about 11.4 amp hrs My Comparison of the two are Diesel Heater Pros Cheap Initial Investment

The Propex site says when the burners are running the unit draws 1.4 amps an hour. However at 20 degrees the unit only runs for 12 min an hour. I timed this. You an see this in my other videos about the heater. So I divided the 1.4 amp hours by 60 minutes and multiplied that by 12 for 0.280 amps an hour. Multiply that by 10 hours and I get 2.8 amps for 10 hours. Thank You for watching. I love the Propex furnace that came with my trailer, we ran the crap out of it every night for almost 2 weeks on one 11lb. tank along with the cooking we did during our trip so it is very efficient. 1 pound of propane produces 20 ounces if water when burned. It rains inside insulated RVs too.

Not with a vapor barrier. I have no condensation problems at all. None!

@@joec4871 A catalytic heater exhausts water vapor from combustion into the conditioned space. A furnace with a heat exchanger sends that water vapor outside rather than blowing it into the cabin.
