Agree but it will be a dream for two reasons. 1. People like him will not contest elections for various reasons. 2. 80% of population are rural folks who know nothing about economy and will vote for crooks for selfish reasons. So you and I will die dreaming for a developed SL

Thanks Mr Mahendra Jayasekera. When I listened I didn't realise that this speech is 6 months old. It was sent me by my Belgian neighbour, M. Jacques Huyghebaert who has been in SrI Lanka for twenty years, but understands no Sinhalese or Tamil, but does understand Lingala (a language of the Congo with 20 million speakers) and English (his first language is French). Since he uses about five languages fluently, and about fifteen languages in all, one has to acknowledge that he has done his share to overcome the chaos that followed after God destroyed the Tower of Babel, I spend a lot of time listening to Sinhalese KZbins to find out about Lanka. My better language is English, but I know only those two languages - no Tamil at all. This is a bold and honest speech by Mahendra; the video, together with the introduction amount to clear identification of the speaker, although I hadn't heard of him. What is important is the content, and that is presented very clearly. It is the politicisation of every aspect of social life that is to blame. That this speech has not had the impact that it ought to have had must be clear from the fact that I'm submitting the very first comment on it on 11/05/2023. Not Mahendra's fault; how could he actually name the politicians involved? And I appreciate that he doesn't castigate them as monsters. As an obscure retired village English teacher from Banadarawela it is my practice to stick my neck out much more. About values, Mahendra is very clear. We have to do the right thing. He elaborates, but what he says amounts to affirming the "Categorical Imperative" that Immanuel Kant wrote about. Jacques has read it in the original German, where it is difficult because of Kant's long sentences. I had ploughed through it in English. Mahendra may not have even HEARD of Kant. That doesn't matter. He affirms absolute standards which are identical with what I hold. So, a wonderful speech which I shall try to publicise a little!

True but people like you should contest elections. Take a step back and ask a question. What is the purpose of a government? Run commercial establishments? No, they need to enact laws, run defence, education, judiciary, health, tax, customs etc and create competition among private sector businesses so that people buy goods and services at reasonable prices. Privatise all these and save billions of tax payers money each year and our living standards will improve
