I still remember, as a teenager, I was playing this for the first time on my little stereo in my room and my dad, who was schooled by nuns in his small town education back in the 40's & 50's, stopped by my door because he recognized the words "Kyrie Eleison" because it was an old prayer they had used back in his childhood. That really changed my view of the song.

@@wjcorrinne4052 well not every Christian. It would be the liturgical denominations. For example, you wouldn’t find the Kyrie (in whatever language) at a Baptist or Pentecostal church. I know I can go to a Catholic baptism, wedding, or funeral and know I won’t be completely lost.

Saw Mr. Mister in concert in the 80s. They were the warm up band for either Heart or Boston, I can't remember. None of us had heard of them, we were joking outside that we were there to see this Mr. Mister whatever he was and not the main act. Then they opened the set with this song and literally brought the place down. When they finished the last harmonized line, the entire Seattle Center Coliseum was dead silent for about 5 seconds and then exploded with cheers. People were just stunned for a moment.

Hello. Kyrie eleison (Κύριε Ελέησον) is actually Greek. the "e" at the end is pronounced (like in Spanish). The New Testament was written in Greek and then translated to Latin, so this phrase Kyrie Eleison is used by the Greek Orthodox Christian church and by the Catholic church

Latin - Kyrie - Lord - Eleison - Have Mercy Lord Have Mercy on the road I must travel! Ruach is Hebrew for Wind, so he mentions : The wind blows hard against this mountainside Across the sea into my soul It reaches into where I cannot hide Setting my feet upon the road So he is being filled with the Holy Spirit. The group got our generation into studying Latin, NT Greek, & Hebrew to understand this song!

Kyrie eleison is a Gregorian chant in Latin (Lord have mercy). 9 years of Catholic school with Mass in Latin. Monday through Friday & Sundays. Way back in the day. I loved Mass in Latin. It was sad when Mass changed to English. It lost it's beautiful feeling.

@@greek8goddess True--it was the only Greek used in the Latin Mass (Roman Catholic) which gives the phrase ancient respect. In Christian services, the "Kyrie" is a part of the liturgy--the order of the service--even to this day, though now it is often sung in the vernacular--ie, "Lord have mercy upon us, Christ have mercy upon us, Lord have mercy upon us."
