This was the hottest tune when I was in the 6th grade back at Bryan Elementary School in Washington, DC. I played my copy of this 45 until it turned chalky white but I never forgot that you CAN NOT remain motionless while listening to to this song. Funk is it's own reward! Thanks for posting.

The song went top 3 WJLB and WCHB and when CKLW the big 100 thousand watt power house pop station played it, it was on. Thanks

Totally awesome track. Lunar Funk is another band name for the Fabulous Counts, then just the Counts. First heard this back in 72 when David Simmons played it on BBC Radio London during his transatlantic hook up with an American RnB station.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for posting this song on You Tube. I was 16 yrs old when this song came out. I am now in my 50's. Do you realize that the song has been playing in my head for the last ten years, wondering where could I find it? It feels good to hear again and brings back pleasant memories. I wish I could buy it somewhere.

Try some of the oldies collections from that year on CD - one of them has to include it! This was one of my mom's favorite dance records...

This song was created because it was near Christmas and the group came to me and said they had know money for Christmas gifts. The record label said they had know money coming which was a lie. I said lets go into the studio and cut a record. We went into the studio and cut two masters Mr. Penguin under Lunar Funk (Bell Records) and Bad Smoke (Chess Records) under name Bad Smoke. I got on a plane and went to New York and cut my first and second major label master purchase deal. Bell Records wanted the Lunar Funk record so bad, their A&R head check me into a hotel and stayed in the same room. Leroy Emmanuel, Mose Davis, Demo Cates and Andrew Gibson.

I remember it. Its rare, and alot of people aren't familiar with it, even people who think they know music. There was a dance called Mr Penguin too...at least in some parts of the country.

I love this song! I have no idea what made me think of it today. I think you are right Marlin, The Big 8 CKLW, helped propel it to the top!

First heard this played during Wolfman Jack's last border blaster 1972 show on station XEPRS ( aka. XERB). The full last show is still available on line with great songs like this! Thanks for sharing!

My best friend and I used to "get down" to this one back during the spring of '72! I see your copy of "Mr. Pengiun" is on Arista's "Flashback" reissue label. My worn out copy on the original Bell label (Arista used to be Bell Records) is sitting somewhere in my basement in a box under the stairs. I just might go dig it up...

We were 18 years old, it was 1972 and the drinking age had just been lowered to 18! No more driving over to Windsor! What would three recent grads from Franklin High do? We went to the LaChambre' a local strip club and got some over priced beers and watched the strippers! And what song were the girls dancing to? This one!

You're taking me back to 8th grade when I lived in Detroit. Which Dramatic song was number 1 at the time? It don't think it was 'In the Rain." Refresh my memory.
