About Mr. Queen (철인왕후):

Bong Hwan’s soul inhabited her body and gained some of her memories but So Yong herself was never actually an active participant in the story. Cheolong fell in love with his strange queen that walks like a man, speaks rudely, cooks amazingly, and has endless knowledge about the future. He fell in love with the soul in her body: Bong Hwan. Before returning to his male body in the present, So Bong fully embraced being in a woman’s body, accepted their feelings for their king and their pregnancy. Bong Hwan is pushed aside and in the end, his journey and growth were just the means to someone else’s happiness merely a stepping stone to So Yong and Cheoljong’s happily ever after. the writers just wanted a safe heterosexual couple

Simple fact is that Cheol Jeong loved the chef. They fought with each other, slowly started to tolerate each other, forged a tentative friendship, then a very strong bond and then fell in love. All these things happened with the chef.. not with the queen. It doesn't matter if there were 2 souls in the body.. the King made the Queen's dictionary to understand what? To understand the soul who baffled him and attracted him. And ultimately, we all fall for the soul. I'm so mad that he wasn't shown in the future. The King and the Chef should have met again, both as men this time so that they would have had a chance to openly explore their true selves while being with their soul mate. But nooooo tv won't give us that. 😒😒😒

That's why they gave us that "connection" with SY in the prequel segment in Bamboo Forest and then followed it up with the last segment with SB where the king makes a wish upon a falling star that he be allowed to be reborn and find his "strange" queen again. They were hinting that it was the same person, but the execution of their vision was absolute crap. I felt nothing for SY - everything about her from her voice to her laugh and the weak copies of SB's mannerisms just irritated me and had me wanting to point at the screen and scream "fraud"! The ending broke my heart. I agree that they should have just stuck with the way the novel and the CDrama went with it and had the queen die before the playboy's soul entered. Just muddied the waters with this nonsense...not to mention the bad characterization. CJ has a near photographic memory but can't tell his queen is no longer Mr. Queen? Same soul or no, he should have noticed the differences.

So Yong had the same personality as Bong Hwan. She was always different, but remember the times she lived in. In Joseon era it wasn't easy to just be yourself, she had a lot of fears. Bong Hwan gave her the courage to become her true self, to not hide her true personality. That's why the King fell in love with HER. Bong Hwan helped them to see things they couldn't see because of their misunderstandings and fears.

I'm happy to read the comments section 😭 I was so frustrated after watching the ending that I needed to see what other people think. The king fell in love with the chef and only the chef. There is this thing where the king told Unbin *"I never liked you just because you saved me from the well"* Reinforcing the fact that he wouldn't have loved the queen even if that well situation would have cleared up. The King started falling for the soul in the queen's body and not the actual queen. It is sad to see that he lost his love and never even realised it. It is sad to watch how they casually brush off the chef aside like he wasn't the main character 🥺 It's sad that the creators who showed so much development of love and care between the King and the chefs soul take it back with this type of ending 😀 I do not want to accept this ending 💔

Looking at the comments, I feel the pain. It's what I felt when the series first ended...I was so mad, and I'm still not 100% on-board. However, I've come to understand the intention is that BH and SY are the same soul, with SY being his previous life. Look back at episode 5 for the hint as well as the explanation of why time is flowing at the same rate in the past and present. I don't like it because it muddied the waters in both character development and fan attachment (would have preferred the novel version and a more linear story the audience stayed with from beginning to end), but it's what the writers went with. It explains why BH had to leave. He can't spiritually evolve through the process of reincarnation by living out SY's life because his soul already is...it would be an endless loop. However, by preventing her from dying with out of resentment/despair/powerlessness, those grudges were not carried to SY's next life as BH, which accounts for why his personality is less selfish and uncaring in the altered timeline, even before his accident. Also, due to their choosing Cheoljong as their king instead of fictionalizing one, they had to stay restricted to certain historical events. As such, in the book BH looks at, it still lists CJ dying at age 32, and to make way for the historically important and beloved Queen Min and her husband, his and SY's baby could not survive either. Having BH able to stay only to suffer those tragedies would have been as heartwrenching as the ending we received. However, I think the writers should have had BH meeting CJ's reincarnation either in the main drama or the spin-offs. Not only would it make it clearer that he and SY were the same soul (thereby lessening the emotional divide fans felt between those characters), it would have had the audience feel the story had more closure for him and therefore for the SB that SHS made us all fall in love with. There are other small changes I would have made at the end to make it not deviate so much from the characterizations they built up, but this response is already lengthy, so I will stop here.

The reason why a lot of people don't like this ending is because the chef is a much more compelling character than the queen with motivations that align with the king. We don't know how the queen was before she came here. Hong Yeon says she was kind and intelligent, but the thing is we don't actually see any of that. It was the chef who fought to survive, who was kind to Dam Hyang, who cared that the ministers were corrupt and who understood what cheoljong was trying to achieve, go so far as to ignore his own safety, actually supporting and fighting with him to make it happen. All we know about the queen was that she was manipulated by her family and that she loved the king. I mean in the end we see she tried to change the internal court, but she was blind to all of it before she saw it through the chef's memories. Did she care about the people or anyone else? It really doesn't come across like that or that she was a person with any other ambition except being the proper queen and being loved by the king. Now i understand that's how women were forced to be back then, but it doesn't make her an interesting character in this show. She had no purpose except being loved by the king in the show, no other ambition, which I actually don't like at all.

For you you saw 2 guys falling in love but for me I saw two people falling in love that just happen to be guys. I do however know without a doubt that had BH been a guy, the king would have never ever gotten any love feeling for BH and likewise BH would have never fallen for the king. The King is shown to be clearly Heterosexual and would have dismissed BH from the get go had he show up as Male-BH. The most that could have happen is a bro mance and even that is kinda dicey. It would have turn into a show about a modern chef in the Joseon era. BH being in SY body gave CJ the chance to fall in love with BH, and likewise, BH- no longer feeling threaten as much about his masculinity if he had been in aguy felt that it was okay to be have sex with CJ since he had the "right" equipment. Its a complex situation as under normal circumstance, CJ would not have cared for BH as much and BH wouldnt even be in the same sphere of influences as CJ. The only way that i see this actually being a legit BL series was if both guys had shown inkling of being Bi in the first place.

i feel like the writer confirmed that to us in some way. kim hwan was always accurate whenever he makes a guess like in ep 2 (i think) or in that episode where he was talking to detective hong about lee saeng mang and the "incident" and when he "got" the person who has the ledger (minister jo)...at the last episode, he says that jong cheol is a woman so that could be it🤷🏻‍♀️ thats the only thing he could be "wrong" of but on the rest, hes always right and somehow always nearby the main thing

Bong Hwang went all-in for Cheoljong. Their feelings for Cheoljong were so strong they were willing to risk their life and sacrifice everything. They wanted to stay in Joseon, have a baby with the man they love despite knowing that history is not on their side and they’re basically doomed. Bong Hwan literally ended up being second lead in their love story, i hate this😭 So Yong swooping in last minute and taking So Bong’s place leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. Bong Hwan is pushed aside and in the end, his journey and growth were just the means to someone else’s happiness. Mr. Queen had the opportunity to push boundaries and take a risk.To tell the audience that love is not dictated by our gender or our bodies. Instead the writers chose to undermine their own work, erasing their hero and love story just to fit the heteronormative ideal.

I'm glad we're all on the same page that this ending was homophobic as hell lol. The writers really tried to jump through hoops and create plot holes in order for the King and Chef to still somehow be straight. In the cdrama, they gave us three endings, one of which was where they both reunite in their reincarnated forms in the hospital, and they're both men. The Chinese version was partially censored because it didn't hold back and try to excuse the situation by saying they're both still somehow straight. As campy as it was most times, it showed more consciousness on topics of gender and sexuality, and it's literally only supposed to be a parody of historical dramas. The Korean version could have been remarkable and groundbreaking but it chose to cop out and play out on a predictable trope to appease the people who aren't comfortable with anything other than heterosexuality.

@Ting-Ting Meng Yes!!!I felt the same way. I thought the drama was likable until the last couple of episodes because I could tell where they were going with the story. Like they were so many hints at Bonghwan being the reincarnated form of Soyong because of how many times reincarnation is brought up and the similar characteristics between the Queen and Chef. But when Byeong In tries to confront them at the mountains, suddenly there both very different souls, with different memories??? It doesn't make any sense. But it's a good way to make sure Bonghwan stays straight because he was "influenced" by the Queen's soul so the moments where he feels something are excusable for the audience as not being gay. The special episodes don't help the confusion either. I thought at the very least if they were going the "everyone is straight" route, someone in the Joseon era would at least acknowledge Bonghwan existed (besides Soyong) but nope, the writers couldn't do that either. Yeah, I'm not the big on the romance genre either anymore. I try to stick with thrillers with maybe some romance mixed in there because it's at least not the main focus.

was i sad o not satisfied about the ending yes to an extent. but we always had the question about so yong's soul and if it was 1 body and two souls and it was. in the two extra episodes when they make the wishes, at that time Mr queen was adapting and was happy with the king but he wishes to go back to his body and to let the king have a long happy life so he got what he wanted. did I want Mr queen to be able to say goodbye yes but he went back as fast and as unexpected as he got there.

Exactly, if they made a messy ending like this, it would be better to have a sad ending. Like let the queen die at the end, her role in the movie should be to help the king’s mission. Once it’s done, it’s okay for her to die, or she could give birth to the baby and die straight away after then. That way we know both the chef and the queen wouldn’t be with the king. Just make a sad ending man.

In the end both the king and the queen declared their son as the new king and left the capital to live a peaceful life but one day some soldiers came and killed them both... the reason wasn't mentioned. Then the queen woke up in the modern world as a guy. In the first ending he goes back to the same pool where the accident took place and reminiscing his time with the king but in the alternative ending as he wakes up in the hospital he searches for the king like crazy and then run into a doctor who looks exactly the same as king..... and it just ends right there... man I literally wanted it to last a few minutes more.

But because of So Yong's tragic past, she's unable to showcase her personality. As for Bong wan, his real life was tragic because as a successful chef in the present, he should've died when he jumped into the pool. Therefore, Bong wan and So Yong coexisted in the same body since they have the same personality. Now, So Yong is the person who was always concern with the king. When Bong was was drunk, So Yong's spirit was awake & talked to the king when they have sex. So Yong's spirit is the one who is passionate about loving the king and that made the King fell in love. As for Bong wan, he was the one who changed So Yong's life. At the end, So Yong thanked Bong wan because if not for him So Yong wouldn't have the courage to approach the king & tell him "hey. Although I belong to the Kim clan, you can still trust me because I love you." Bong Wan is the "frienemey" or "bestfriend" that the king never had. Bong Wan is someone who helped the king and So Yong as they struggled to fight for power. So yes! The king is missing something, someone. That is Bong Wan, his friend. As for So Yong and the king, both of them are happy because they truly love each other but that wouldn't have continued if Bong wan didn't help So Yong. :) Ask me a question if you want to understand it.

I wish, but it will never happen. Can't have him go back b/c of the historical roadblocks, can't have a female CJ come forward as a drama based on that would be a risk as fans might not want to see the romance played out between two other actors (KJH and SHS made this drama shine), and can't have KJH and SHS reprise their roles as reborn souls b/c then you'd have to have BH die and even more time pass before the next body is old enough to start a romance...filming like 40-60 years in the future would be complicated. like maybe a one-shot but too complicated for an entire season 2. They should have done that in the spin-off, but instead we get a bunch of funny but ultimately useless scenes play out for entertainment value.

I’m kind of curious…. So if there was no pandemic, would Choi Jin-Hyuk have shown up more in the series somehow? He was only really there in the first and last episodes. It’s one of the weak points in the series: We don’t see much of his character at all as a guy. Jang Bong-hwan is supposed to be the main character in this whole show, but we don’t really know him. It’s one of the odd things about this show-it’s where the writing kind of fails.

If you realize it the king eventually fell for both of the souls not just one the indifferent Mr.Queen and the normal queen who gave Mr.Queen her feelings, eventually the chef felt bad and started to have feelings. The way they changed the ending is kinda frustrating they could have kept both souls together in one body. Each one could have taken a turn that way the ending wouldn't mess with our feelings. One way or the other I felt happy though because the king got to understand how much so yong loves him, eventually he fully gives her his feelings back. I felt sad and angry but I was happy the queen finally had the courage to be more bold, Mr. chef fell for the king you can tell but in Korea they tend to not like BL hence they ended it with Mr. Chef changing his fate along with the king's. Great Drama can make you cry at some point but a little disappointed at the ending overall it would be a 7/10.
