The first collegiate folk wrestler I had to go hand to hand against in the Army, a Sgt in my platoon, he scooped & dumped me on the ground and I defeated him with a leg triangle combined w/an arm bar across the outside of my hip. He yelled out and I told him to tap. The platoon members broke us up. A college wrestling champ in our platoon excitedly asked me afterward, "What was that?!" I only responded that it was a triangle choke with arm bar. Noone in my platoon had seen that before, in the 90s, so it was like having a superpower back then.

Nobuyuki Sato trained under Mitsuro Kimura ′′ Mr Sankaku ′′. I worked at a University in Japan that he was the president of. He introduced judo to me, by bringing an extra gi to my office, putting it on my desk, and inviting me to train with the university judo team. I was very fortunate to have him personally give me my first judo lessons. I still have the gi with his name on it.

If Kosen Judo was open to the world from the beginning...the world of grappling would look much different. It probably would be decades ahead technically than now.

I would have loved to have done Kosen years ago. I do enjoy jiu-jitsu or as Robert Drysdale calls it "Brazilian judo", but unfortunately I've always felt that there was something missing. To bad it never thrived outside of the Kosen system.

Kimura the legend! A phenomenal martial artist who led a difficult life! Thanks for the video Chadi, more people should learn about him. I've always loved Judo even though I never formally trained or graded in it. I've always trained the basics though because it's so solid, it goes really well with our English Freestyle Kickboxing / Dutch Kickboxing mix. The first real fight I had in school a bully jumped on me while I was sat down, we went rolling down the hill and at first I was surprised and scared but the rolling and tumbling felt so much easier than being thrown on mats for hours lol! By the time we hit the bottom he was dizzy and I took his arm and slammed on an arm bar, I'll never forget it, it went on so easily. I expected him to fight back and then I'd transition to triangle or something, but it never happened lol, just slapped him in the face and shouted at him to give up while people ran down the hill the break it up! Osu Mr Kimura!

I have been doing Bjj 13 years, and I have never done Judo. If you have kids start them off with Judo first trust me. I once told a student that Judo is the best base and he looked at me cross eyed. From my years of training a judoka can add wresltling and Bjj techniques faster then either of these disciplines can add Judo. The reason why it's not used in MMA more its because you can't just add those skills in a single training camp. Both Akiyama and Hector Lombard beat Jake shields in MMA with Judo. The same Jake Shields that beat Demian Maia.
