1:05:01 This scene took my breath away; back in the late 90's, when I was a child, I lived near these houses. Of course it had been rebuilt, but it looked much the same. Almost all the houses had children living in them and we all played together in the riverbanks and rice fields and picked mulberries. In this movie, the driver encountered many people on the road, but nobody is walking on that road now. No one lives in those houses and there are no children playing outside. Nothing is growing in the rice fields. In the near future, everyone will forget my hometown, Yugashima.
It is May 2020 and I am here in New Orleans, still in quarantine, but great. And I really enjoy the wonderful black and white Japanese films that have been downloaded here. Thanks so much!!!

@@bettyledesma937 It's January 2021 here. Lovely movie when people's mind were not polluted by evil media brainwash and they had simple and clear thoughts like the landscape they crossed through most of them by feet.

I'm from Spain and I love these old Japanese movies, like Hiroshi Shimizu, Ozu, Mizoguchi etc.... Arigatoooo
Simple story line, yet well developed each character in each character. Each moment is a treasure. Truly heart warming yet sad movie. Thank you for the upload. Rare findings.
I saw this movie some 25 years ago in a Japanese Film Festival. I loved it so much. and then today this movie appeared here, what a surprise because sometimes I remember the movie, so well done and how good are the actors. Thank you.

Refreshing film. Since tyhe first two or three "thank you's" I knew this film was going to be relaxing and enjoyable. I was right. Thank you for downloading.

A beautiful "slice of life" film. Thank you

He's young, handsome, and very polite (and in uniform!), so of course he makes all the girls' hearts flutter. Wonderful slice-of-life that takes us inside the day-to-day concerns (and gossip!) of '30s rural Japan. High unemployment for the men, and much worse for the women. If they only knew what was on the horizon...

They indeed knew that war was on the horizon, and most actually wished for it, same thing in the US. They just didn't believe it would go that wrong for them since it was so much fun to hear/read/watch about Japan's military conquests in Asia at the time. Even this director would make a pro-colonialism movie in 1943, while Uehara Ken acted in many militarist films.

@@Steak818 Japanese had won a war against Russia and China earlier in 1904-1905 that is was not expected to win. Moving out of feudal lifestyle and into western industrial economy in the 19th century there was no turn back for Japan and by 1930 it wasn't going well. It's almost like colonial war was the best option for Japan. If they had not bombed Pearl Harbor, I don't think the USA would have cared about them invading China, they barely did even after. If Japan had played its card better, China would be part of the Japan empire.
Thanks for posting; fascinating to watch. Incidentally, I have an uncle named Hiroshi Shimizu.

1:04:49 " That's why they live long "! When that guy said that to Michiko Kuwano, she smiled and laughed with all of them. I felt goosebumps all over. Because Ms. Kuwano would die at 31, less than 10 years later!

The actress who plays the 17yr old girl (Tsukiji Mayumi) travelling with her mother died the following year (1937) from pneumonia . She was 17.
Hi ! Thanks for the film! I found it once but I forgot the 1930s jazz song that was used in this film. I found it once by accident and somehow lost it! If anyone knows let me know please!

good film, i hope to find more films about Japan pre 1945 (war related or normal life)...57:00 that part is very interesting
What a (forgotten?) gem this is. Thanks for the upload, modernrocksong. A most entertaining and educating coach ride through Japanese mountain terrain, with some interesting passengers. The film is filled with gentle humour - I laughed aloud twice - but also tinged with sadness in view of it being 1936 depression Japan. Overall though, it leaves you with a good feeling, not least thanks to the bus driver, Mr Thank-You. Very much recommended. | 9/10 (at least)
