In response to the "skipped leg day" comments: 3 years before starting training Bruce broke his legs in 7 places. Squatted 190 lbs. as a beginner. At his top weight he squatted 680lbs. He had long limbs, and in the "pre-Platz" days, few people had huge leg development. He was also rather tall for a bodybuilder.

I have that picture today..Bruce was a fine and humble Mr. Universe whom I idolized for many years.

Lucky you! I purchased a Sears 25 lb maroon vinyl barbell set with an instruction course by Bruce included. One of the best purchases I ever made (well, really my parents made as I was 12 yo, lol) That set started a lifetime of barbell and/or strength work of some kind that has served me well for many years. Bruce was my original bodybuilding hero. Later, I got sucked into the marketing machine of some of the better known bodybuilding entrepreneurs shall we say. Once I realized they were mostly sizzle and little steak, I returned to the tried and true methods of Bruce and guys like him. Would absolutely loved to have had a picture of him and myself as a budding weight trainee!

Update...guys, Bruce was no slouch ! standing next to me in 1960 ..he was huge ! Here are some of his feats, which were very impressive in the 1950's when they did not even hear of steroids for weightlifters .Strongest Lifts By the time Bruce’s weight reached 380 lbs, he was lifting impressive numbers in the gym. These were his personal records at the time; Military Press - 375 pounds Squat - 680 pounds Good Morning - 685 pounds (Bent knees, back parallel to the floor) Deadlift - 770 pounds Barbell Curl - 228 pounds Dumbbell Bench Press - 220-pound dumbbells x 2 reps Bench Press - 482 pounds (with a 3-second pause on the chest) Decline Dumbbell Bench Press - 220-pound dumbbells x one rep ¼ Front Squat - 1,320 pounds. He was quite a guy and lived to be almost 80 years of age. He was very humble and us teenagers thought the world of him ! Dana

Bruce's weight of 410 was something that was achieved for a purpose, he started at about 210 lbs. The weight gain was done by Bruce to try and break some of Paul Anderson's records. He fails to say that he never was able to come close, even with all his added bodyweight to Anderson's strength levels! I remember this because this was happening during my early years of weight training. 77 and still lifting.

+Mark Richardson Steroids speed recovery. Guys can work out longer, harder, & more often. Steroids speed up muscle-synthesis. 'Over-building' muscle after breaking it down with exercise is the foundation of bodybuilding. More & faster over-building = more muscle. Nutrition supplies the materials & the fuel. Exercise is the stimulus. Rest & sleep is the recovery. Steroids enhance all 3. Practically speaking, while drugs won't make just anyone into Mr U, on a good-responder they can add 40Lbs of muscle to whatever training & nutrition can. Add growth hormone & insulin, & we have some guys weighing 100Lbs more than they would as naturals.

He could do good mornings with over 400 pounds. A high school friend saw him at one of those department store demos and said he spoke very rapidly. Pretty smart and dedicated guy on the whole. Bruce Randall is one of my favorite classic bodybuilders, but let's not delude ourselves here. He almost certainyl was NOT natural. By 1959, PEDs were well known throughout bodybuilding. Bruce almost certainly was on some kind of PEDs by the time he won, as were most others; since there was by this point no way to win a major contest like Mr. Universe without them. Note that he did not even place in the top 10 the first time he competed in this contest, which to me suggests that he learned that he needed something "extra" in order to seriously compete. This is not to knock him or anyone else. He probably only took them for the contest, stopped taking them afterward, and didn't spend years abusing his body, like modern bodybuilders do today. PEDs were not banned substances. By all accounts, he was a bright guy and a honorable, decent man. I would have loved to have met him.
