August 1978, I was doing preacher curls at World Gym in Santa Monica, and Frank Zane came over and asked "May I work in with you?". (Such a gentleman - Can the reigning Mr Olympia 'work in with me?'... Duh! ). I can hear his distinctive voice in my head 45 years later like it was yesterday "let your biceps do ahhlll the work.". Frank is such a bodybuilding icon! I have been following him for years, and he is one of the reasons I have started my fitness journey. I gave my best and trained hard for years, but I was hardly getting any muscle, only to find out that my diet was nowhere near as it should’ve been. I have always eaten ‘just enough’ thinking it would be sufficient. My first real diet plan taught me the lesson. I remember getting it from Next Level Diet, but somehow it helped me gain a few pounds in my first month of using it. Surely it wasn’t all pure muscle, but I was happier than ever. Great interview with Frank Zane. A lot of excellent information from Frank for bodybuilders as well as those wanting to live a long healthy life. I was fortunate to live near the original Gold's Gym, and that's where I worked out from 1970 until it was sold and turned into a private home in the late 70s. It was an everyday occurrence to see Arnold, Draper, Columbu, Drasin, Robinson, Metzer, and so many others during my morning workout. And, while I didn't see Zane as often as the others (if I remember correctly he was working out in the afternoon after he was done teaching Math at Mark Twain Jr Hi). Frank was not the biggest bodybuilder, but I always thought he looked the best, and still does compared to his contemporaries. Many of the other bodybuilders from that era that are still alive have had serious medical issues. Whether it's from working out to failure, unhealthy lifestyle/diet, abuse of steroids, or something else, I'll take Frank's advice over the others. Thanks again for this excellent interview.

Of all the things Mr.Zane said the thing that I personally found most interesting was ((and he came back to it time and time again)) was how important it was to get actual "fotos" of Your body to be able to know what ACTUALLY look like. And that looking in the mirror will NOT suffice. The reason that I find this interesting is that I've so often experienced "dysmorphia" both negative (people thinking they are to fat or skinny) and ""positive"" people who clearly think their body has "properties" that it doesn't, that I've come to believe that we are all inherently unable to look at ourselves objectively. And that generally speaking our underlying mental state will always "interfere" and influence our perception to such an extent that what we "see"(or more correctly perceive) is more dependent on an "inner image" than what our eyes "physically register". Now I believe that this goes for both "mental properties" and actual "physical ones" (i.e. body image) but here I'm mainly concerned of the physical appearance. And so in order to have any chance of objectively look at our own bodies (when that is what we want) is to do it in such a context that we can ""fool ourselves"" that we are looking at someone else, and this can never be done when "watching" (or more correctly evaluating, critiquing) yourself "live". Ideally I would even go as far as to argue that it's better if You can not even see Your face (or more generally speaking identify Yourself, in contexts where we are not talking about just physical appearance). All in order to to decouple Your "ego" and avoid all the "instinctive mental processes" that "looking at Yourself" unavoidably evokes. At least those are my "longwinded 5c's". Best regards

I've always admired Frank Zane. He was just an amazing athlete who put in the work and it showed. My absolute favorite body builder. No questions asked. I still revere this man.

That was some fantastic information! There is nobody in the World like Frank, his unique way of looking at things is very helpful and his calm and cool manner is really inspiring. He is one of the few people in the industry who speaks from genuine experience and intelligence.

Buddy needs to relearn some of his beliefs. Lol roid rage is proven to be a myth and doesn't change your personality... Second, trt will lower your chances of prostate cancer. Low testosterone makes you more likely to develop prostate cancer. Also he clearly has lied about his protein intake. The food he listed does not hit 240g of protein a day. Not even close and if you hit 240 g of protein a day without wating over 2000 calories I'll give you 5k cash. He was definitely taking taking protein even know he said he didn't.... doesn't add up.

Arnold took up the headlines but Frank Zane possessed something special that every guy wanted. Seeing an elderly Zane is making me feel some sort of way.

I'm Asian and I was a great admirer of Zane from afar, the man with greatest body shape, calm & hardly spoken bodybuilder of all time. I almost can't recognised Frank Zane now. I believe it's all Sheer Hard work to come this far.

Loved this interview never even knew of this guy....one thing that was a jewel to me was" work out at a tempo" Make "light weight feel heavy" and work at your goals and be about you and not others.

Thank you so much Frank Zane! Inspiration to me I so many ways. Not only in respect to your accomplishments, but who you are and what you represent. I met you years ago in Portsmouth, Ohio. I was a competitive body builder and we spoke of your vacuum and that I was able to do as well. You invited me to train with you and regret that I couldn’t financially do at that time. I’m 54 now and reflect on your inner montra, getting me and my body back. Thanks again and sure you know the impact you have made on many individuals! Randy H
