Welcome to the dark side. We have airflow, an amazing intake port design, an incredible aftermarket. Coming soon, to a swap near you - the Honda K20 and K24

So first, a bit of history. The K20 first appeared in 2001, very soon after Honda's F20C engine that heralded many of the amazing technologies we would see in the K20. The first cars to get the K20 engine in 2001 were the JDM EP3 Civic Type R and the Integra Type R. Europe got the K20 in the same year in their version of the Civic Type R. Australia and New Zealand got their K20 in 2002 in their Honda Integra Type R. USA got it's first K20 engines in 2002 as well, in the Acura RSX and the Civic Si. The first K24 engines also appeared in 2002 in the Honda CR-V and the JDM Accord Type S. Very soon after this the K20 and K24 engines spread like wildfire throughout the Honda model range, powering much of it's vehicles (anything from the Honda Odyssey to the Honda FR-V and many cars in between)
Today, 19 years after it's introduction the Honda K20 and K24 engines are still as popular as ever, surrounded by an incredible aftermarket, enthusiasts, tuners and racers all around the world seem to be creating ever more impressive builds. This is likely the greatest testament to the brilliance of this engine's design.
But not all K20 and K24 engines are the same. They differ between each other substantially and can be divided into performance and economy versions on the K20 and K24. The performance and economy versions are different from the very core. Inside a k20a3 engine for example you will find a forged steel crankshaft, while inside a k20a2 or a k20z1 or k20z3 engine you will find a forged steel crankshaft that is also fully counterweighted, something that's important if you want so spend a lot of time in high rev range. The connecting rods and pistons are different too. Performance k20 and k24 conrods are beefier with a higher tensile strength. Pistons are cast and have molybdenum coated skirts in all k engines, but they feature noticeably larger domes for higher compression in performance k20 and k24 Honda engines.
But perhaps the biggest different is in the v-tec system of these engines. Both performance and economy honda k20 and k24 engines feature i-vtec, which adds intelligence to v-tec. In reality it adds camshaft phasing, the ability to advance or retard camshaft timing based on various inputs given to the engine's ECU. Now performance i-vtec features has three two different camshaft profiles, a mild one for low rpms and an aggressive one with higher camshaft duration and lift for higher rpms. In addition to this it has VTC, which is the variable camshaft timing we already explained and described. In contrast to this economy ivtec functions in a different way. At low rpms in opens just one intake valve fully and the other only slightly to prevent fuel from pooling behind the valve, this saves fuel and improves emissions. At higher rpms both valves are opened, but lift and duration remains unchanged. Also, economy i-vtec doesn't have VTC and has nothing variable on the exhaust valves.
Another important feature of the Honda k20 and k24 is a narrower valve included angle, compared to older Honda performance engines such as the B16 or B18. This enabled engineers to design an optimal intake port shape and maximize airflow. Stock K20 heads are capable of flowing 290-300 cfm, which is more than impressive. The other reason why k20 and k24 heads flow so well is the size of their intake and exhaust valves. k20 engines come with 35 mm intake and 30 mm exhaust valves, while in some k24 you will find 35 mm diameter intake and 31 mm diameter exhaust valves on some k24 engines.
The potential of the k20 and k24 means that k-swaps are everywhere now, and people have ventured well beyond the usual k20 / k24 into ek, ef, eg, civic or da integra. Nowadays k20 are often making into rwd chassis cars too.
When it comes to naturally aspirated tuning, the k20 and k24 engines are one of the few engines capable of reaching 300hp with relative ease (it's not easy) and can generate as much as 500 NA hp if you're crazy enough. But of course everyone's into forced induction nowadays and turbo k20 and k24 as well as supercharged ones abound. Bolt on kits are everywhere and you can build pretty much anything, the only limits are the thickness of your wallet and the sky. "Safe" turbo power for a stock k20 or k24 block is around 300 hp, but many people have gone beyond that, whether it's on borrowed time or not, really depends mostly on your tuning. If you're willing to spend on forged pistons and maybe even reinforce the block with some block guards, upgraded fasteners and ductile sleeves the k20 / k24 is ready to take you beyond 1000 hp.
A very special thank you to my Patron:
Daniel

After all the s2000 f20c engine had the highest hp\l until Ferrari 458 came on the market
4 жыл бұрын
Well obviously as at the point of that interview, it was the highest HP NA 4-cylinder ever made.. But the K-series is very similar in design only it was built for a different platform. Had the K20 or K24 been in the S2K, it would have easily been able to achieve the same HP numbers. The K20A out of the ITR or K24A2 can make 230whp with just bolt ons, and that like 260-270 crank HP. Im making 265whp with a ported K20a2 head with ported RBC and 74mm TB and k24a2 stock block. Stock Pistons, Cams, Supertech valvetrain, 40*VTC.. Bolt ons are just full 3 inch custom exhaust with custom big-tube 4-2-1 header and 4 inch custom CAI. Im running RDX injectors.. I have a 8600 redline more for safety reasons and reliability as I could probably go to 9K if I really wanted to.

@@nerfinator465 Depends on your location and how much of the work you can do yourself. The States people say the K20 swap in-and-out-the-door for an MR-S is almost 10k USD, but that's with the owner picking their nose and having everything done for them. If you source a rear-end totaled RSX from an auction, have a garage, an engine hoist, tools and know-how etc, you could get it done with around 5k. If you don't have the tools, but have time to source the engine and transmission, wait for good deals on swap parts etc, but pay for labor, it's probably between the two ranges at like 8k.

The plain old high-revving K20 gives the most traditional Honda feeling of chasing the redline. :) K24/K20 Frank is a lot more torquey, but I didn't feel it was actually more fun to drive. (Plus you "should" really lower the rev limiter to 7500rpm on K24/20 engines if you want the engine to last -- it has a MUCH longer stroke after all. Where a K20 is quite happy at the official max 8600rpm or even 9000rpm... Whereas Revving a K24 to 8600rpm is equivalent to revving a K20 to 10,000rpm!)

You should swap a k24 into your mr2. Hux racing sells mounts and has a service to merge the the wiring harness.. I just bought an aw11 mr2 with no motor for 1k. .... right now I'm going through all the suspension bushings adding some WAT coilovers rebuilding the steering rack.. basically just follow your suspension series and repairing any rust I find along the way. I'm gonna use a K24A2 and a 6 speed k20 trans with an lsd.. :) all you need are the mounts and some slightly shortened and welded Honda b series axels.. they have the same exact spline and diameter as the toyota axels...:) This is a super balanced strong and cheap totally underrated swap for aw11 mr2s in my opinion.... and I'd love to see a build series on it!

the k series is very affordable now, most people would seek the k20, but i prefer the k24 from an acura tsx. i have an 06 accord 5 speed manual with the "economy" k24a8 and an toyota ae92 with the 4age. the accord is my daily beater and i took it anywhere , i took trips to sf and back which is 420 miles from me. car never give me any problem, run smoothly like a charm, mpg was fanstatic once i got on the freeway( average 33-35 mpg at 75-80mph), in town around 22-24. i did a couple poor man mod for the motor, swapping the intake manifold, throttle body from an acura tsx k24a2( i think), exhaust header from dc sports and cai( not short ram). and it does give it a very noticeable throttle respond. the ae92 is my toy, i drive it on my days off, and i can go anywhere with it also but the accord is the best car interm of comfy,mpg and also fun ( with my poor man mods) to drive. maybe the ae92 give me a little bit more smiles while reving it up but the accord really give u that comfy and torquie feeling on a long drive.

The reason you want a shallow valve angle is because it allows a flatter combustion chamber. This in turn offers a better compression ratio for better thermal efficiency without needing to have a large piston dome (just look at the B16B pistons, some time). A wider valve angle increases combustion chamber size and in turn makes room for larger valves.

I fell in love with the K series when I found out it had a timing chain. The timing belt in my 94 Prelude Si snapped twice destroying the head and valves both times (69,000 miles and 120,000 miles). Then it happened in my 91 CRX Si on its original engine and the B16 I had swapped into it. Both were around 120,000 miles.

u should always do ur timing belt before it is due every 60k miles. so u should have done ur timing belt at 58k instead of 69k, and 115k instead of 120. do ur maintenance on time and u wouldn't snap any belt. i've always done my timing belt 5k miles before it 's due and i've never break any belt. just because it use chain instead of belt doesn't mean the chain doesn't wear.my accord 5speed hasn't hit 100k mile yet but when it hit around 120k mile i will get new chain and tensioner . those tensioner tend to fail as the miles go up with the k series.

9:25 And another error, K24Z3 and K24Z7 are performance motors, defined by three lobe vtec, which is what all performance motors have in common... doesn't matter what the exhaust manifold design is. Sure, it's a step down from having a 4-port exhaust exit, but that's not what differentiates a performance 3-lobe vtec motor. The others are meant for economy, meaning they have 2-lobe vtec, which works to save fuel by reducing 16-valves down to 12-valves below 2200rpm.

The problem with k20 in beginning was a few reasons: fuel system didn't have a return. Bottom end was weaker than B16. Also, they weren't compatible with older cars since they spun same direction as most manufacture (unlike previous hondas that spun opposite of most manufactured engines). They didn't have converted kits (such as engine mounts) to stick them in older civics. Few people understood how to tune them with VTC (alot of early tuners disabled the system) Now the plus side K20A2 ( usa Rsx-s) head breathed incredible well.(port and polish only to be done in extreme tuning cases). Timing chains instead of timing belts (no longer had to be afraid of timing belt breaking and completely trashing engine). Once tuners figured out how to tune using VTC. You no longer had to adjust cam phase via loosing bolts on cam pulley, adjust it and tightened bolts. This variable cam phase via Vtc made a high tune engine run better through out the range of rpms. Also, because the head breathed so well on K20A2, a simple cold air intake could give you over 5٪ more power in mid to high rpms.

Amazing video, you explained the differences and what the K series engine is capable better than anyone with no glossing over any finer details or wrong information. I used to have a FD Honda Civic sport with the economy K20z and I was quite disable with the performance but I know it's because of the differences in design. I currently have a Honda Jazz with then L15A which was a single cam VTEC engine that replaced the D16 engine in the previous generation. It's a lively engine that makes the same power and torque as the D16 with less capacity but much better fuel economy. It has also responded well to mods and sound great with a full exhaust. But it's very hard to find any tuning information in English about it as most tuned versions I see are in South East Asia where it's more popular.

Great video! I can see why people would think the k24z7 engine is an economy motor because of the ivtec only on the intake side. However, the motor is beast when adding a turbo kit to it. Most if not all k24z7 motors make over 400whp on ~10psi with something like a 6262 turbo. N/A wise, yes, they aren't the greatest; however, you can always do a k20 head swap on these motors (little known fact).

I like that variable intake, I ran a Offy split port four cylinder manifold 4 barrel holly on a highly moded lima engine, ( 2,3) stock bottom end the motor was a turd at 85, milled the head to 11-1 crane stage2 cam kit, hooker headers and adjustable cam sprocket ( you have to do that when you mill the head, the lima 2,3 is a non interference engine until you start messing with domed pistons and milling the cylinder head, when I ran a 390 Holleyj jetted by looking at the plugs, the four primary ports would freeze when acclerating, dual points, accel blaster coil and split fire plugs, it made around 140 hp

The whole "most power per liter" statement is accurate, as long as we aren't going to mention motorcycle engines. Just off the top of my head, the first gen Hayabusa debuted in 1999 and had roughly 133/liter. There are others as well, but everyone knows "the Busa". Still, the F20C was/is an impressive platform nonetheless.

In America at least the K series is the LS of four-bangers. The answer is in aftermarket products. Some engines are obscure and have very little aftermarket support. Some engines have decent support: you can get headers, cams, intakes, and rebuild kits. Some engines have really good after market support: turbo manifold options, crankshaft options, oil pan options, turbo kits, supercharger kits, and swap kits. Then there is the LS: if it is out there, you can get it for an LS. Crankshafts/camshafts that change firing orders, any type of power-adder option (including Roots supercharger), any type of exhaust manifold, HUNDREDS of off-the-shelf cam options and dozens of off-the-shelf cylinder head options. Don’t get me wrong, they are good. I helped someone build a 300hp NA K24 and it rips.

26:28 I'm sorry, I just had to correct this. The RBC (AKA RRB) gives 8-12whp [throughout the rev range compared to the PRB], while a few mm larger runners (the RRC) gives 9-13whp gain [throughout the rev range compared to the PRB]. Just 1hp gain, as Hondata as proven time and time again, that porting a manifold larger by 1mm for an internally stock K20/K24 adds just 1hp. The same exact thing was seen with the PRB, going to the PRC, which is the JDM version of the PRB and adds 1hp. So, don't go out and pay three times for an RRC, when you can get the mass produced USDM version RRB and only miss out on 1hp. If you are going to build the engine for high compression, or go for boost, then buy a great big manifold like the Skunk2 which is not good for internally stock [compression]/non-boosted applications. Also, don't confuse the RRB with RBB, which is a TSX intake manifold, and that's only good for low end power. Again, the PRB is from the USDM DC5 Type-S, while the PRC is from the JDM DC5 Type-R AND, the RRB is from the USDM 06 Civic Si, while the RRC is from the JDM Civic Type-R Same thing here, USDM is just a slight step down from the JDM version. 1hp step down, but about 3X less in cost.

Sections I will watch three times, and I stop the video frequently to study the provided examples of hardware. On the subject of the direction of rotation, isn't this also the reason you don't see B series engines swapped into RWD applications because they spin the wrong way? Also on tuning the K20 realistically you can get up to around 250hp peak power with bolts ons and a tune at a reasonable price and although thats not a huge jump at the top end you will gain 50-60hp in the mid range so the power becomes much more accessible and at a much earlier point in the rev range, now if you're aiming for 300hp the cost of CNC machining the head, RRC inlet manifold, cams, ITB's etc... you are knocking on the door of FI setup cost so not a lot of people go there and you are actually much better off going for a K24 block with K20 head which you can put together mostly out of parts from a junkyard, the trade off is lower RPM but you can hit 300hp NA for less money.
@lucysmith4242

Not a honda guy, but i'm wondering why you would use the k20 head on the k24 block if the k24 head has larger valves. Does the k20 head flow better than the k24? Or is it something else like the chambers are smaller or something of that nature?
@421hondathatswhatsup
@421hondathatswhatsup 4 жыл бұрын
Lucy Smith yes k20a2 head would flow better. And has more aggressive camshafts. Unless you have a k24a2 from tsx then I would leave that k24a2 in one piece. Any other k24 (a1, a4, etc) is more economy based and would benefit from a type s (a2), type r (k20a), or 06-08 si (z3) head.

I don't know why it would be lower redline, just upgrade the pump. Then you can do 8k revs all day. With stock cams that's all you'll need anyways since power level won't go past 8100 or 8200 Rev. More torque always feels fast tooo
