Two of many reasons why I love Honda’s so much: 1 I’m a full time mechanic for over 20 years and work on everything from golf carts to fire engines and 2: I purchased my 2002 Acura RSX Type S brand new and still driving it daily now with 455,000 miles, original water pump, oil pump, good compression and no engine lights, synthetic oil changes every 3k and valve only two adjustments needed, yet it still runs like a champ and no I’ve never ever babied it when driving it but strict with maintaining it, Honda is the power of dreams with no doubt

I think the haters are just annoyed that a manufacturer managed to produce an engine that combines everything - huge tuning potential, simple construction, doesn't leak, and it's unkillable. I bought an 05 Accord Euro Luxury Sport about 10 months ago. The thing is 15 yrs old, but still feels like a new car. No rattles, no squeaks. 147kW, one of the best 6spd manual boxes you can get, and double wishbone suspension on all four corners. I've paid $5k for a car that beats so many other cars hands down. This is one car that I can't see myself ever selling.

@@dadigitechman Not in particularly large numbers, and a K-swapped plane is going to be considered an experimental. There are also LS swapped and Yamaha swapped planes in a similar situation. All fantastic, but niche and legally restricted. The most successful auto engine for airplanes is a Mercedes V6 diesel, which is offered as stock in Diamond brand airplanes. There's nothing wrong with car engines, except that the aviation world is RIDICULOUSLY conservative and it costs unholy amounts of money to certify an engine for a tiny market. Even a small company like Mazda moves more engines in a month than the entire general aviation industry does in a year. It's just not worth any company's time. Diamond went through certification on the Mercedes engine (originally rebranded as Thielert and now Austro) because they wanted their million-dollar airplanes to be ridiculously efficient. They achieved that with the Mercedes diesel, but it came very close to sending Diamond to the shadow realm. Most of the time it makes more sense to just use the old 1930s-tech airplane engines that got certified back when aviators weren't all golf-playing lawyers. They work, they're light, and if Ferrari prices for VW Bug tech bother you, then maybe you're too much of a poor-people for aviation. IMO we'd all be better off throwing the lawyers out of helicopters and putting K24s into the planes.

As a mechanic of nearly 25 years who has worked for GM, Ford, Toyota, and now Honda for the last 15 years, I have long argued that the Honda 2.4L I4 (especially the K24) is the best made I4 in the history of the automobile world. If maintained this motor will never brake down. I have seen Accord's come in with this motor having 300 and even 400,000 miles and tell me they've only ever changed the oil and done regular maintenance. It is an absolute shame Honda abandoned this power train and went with the horrific 1.5L turbo. In my 15 years at Honda I have never seen so many issues with a motor and they're not getting better. When you see more new cars with the 1.5L than old cars then you know you have made a dud. I cannot recommend the 1.5L to anyone. I will recommend the 2.0L turbo though. That motor is much more robust and does not have the same issues. With that said, you cannot beat the 2.4L nor the 3.5L V6. They are simply the best.

That's the oil pump with balancer which was used on the K24 & certain derivatives of the K20 (that's why it is such a beast of an assembly). Most performance builds delete the balancer assembly. Some use a modified version of the pump used on the F20 engine if it is a super high rev build. They are a nice bit of kit, amazing they made money selling them!

Well done video... One omission: You neglected to mention that the neatly designed oil pump assembly also incorporates the balance shafts, using the same drive, all in one compact module.
@Samqdf

I noticed that. Another thing of note is the integrated steel / iron supports located in the underside of each of the main bearing caps. They can be identified by the darker colour than the rest of the bearing cap assembly at 27:45

Great engine design and way ahead of it's time and today. The ribbed block also contributed to rigidity. Oil jets were also introduced to lubricate and cool the pistons. Coolant jacket also kept the cylinders nice and cool. The VTEC VTC system had four different valve timing modes for engine performance: idle, low rpm economy, low rpm torque, and VTEC high rpm torque. The FD2 Type R K20A was extraordinary for a factory performance engine with racing upgrades on almost every component: pistons, rods, porting of manifold + ports, flywheel, oil pump, exhaust header, etc.

Just had to jump in here to make my first comment to thank you for the Honda love. It's been evident to me in the past decade+ that there has been a lot of pop shots directed at Hondas by the internet forum community (including that other KZbin channel that mod cars mightily) that Honda sucks this, Honda sucks that, and I see it actually deceiving or misleading the younger generation that are newly getting into the car enthusiast scene. With videos like this and your passion showing in presenting it, I hope the younger crowd get a little more educated and are properly guided in the right directions. Thank you.

I wonder if the overly sturdy construction of especially the bottom end is the result of Honda coming from sports bikes and a long history of formula sport, where the engine is used as a stressed member (gearbox and rear end hanging of it).
