My goodness. Thank you for making this simple! Other videos overcomplicate it tremendously. It can be complicated if it need be, but you first have to understand the basic concept of what normalization and optimization are. Then everything else falls into place.

Great video! Audio is an under-appreciated aspect of videos, so it’s nice to have folks put knowledge out there on how to do it right. I have a bit of experience handling audio for music, video, and more, but I still learned a few tips and tricks in this

I always master each track I use in fairlight by adjusting each track volume and set my LUFS to -14 for my meter. Then play it and see if it needs tweaking. I do this for each track (normally 10 tracks) and play the whole video to make sure it maintains around -14.0 to -14.5 LUFS. I tried doing the methods you mentioned and it’s not perfect for each track I use since I use music. I want my soft sounds to stay lower db because that is how the music is mastered. Since the music I use starts normally at a lower volume and builds louder towards the end, that is the desired volume goal. These methods might work for vocals, but not so much for my music channel. They are great methods to use and thanks for pointing out the tool that is available.

what's the best for background music in talking head videos? I used to set it to about -30dB
@OrchestralMusicMidJourneyArt
@OrchestralMusicMidJourneyArt 4 ай бұрын
@@Greinerdavid use music that fits the mood you are trying to create. Make sure it’s clear for copyright too. Keep the sound levels low enough to hear your voice, but loud enough to hear the background music. Play your vocal track and bring the background music to the point it can’t be heard at all, then slowly bring up the db levels to where you hear it. Remember your quality of hearing may be different than others, so use your track mixer visually as a guide. Finding a good balance is tricky, especially when the vocals dip at a lower db.

Very nice feature !! I don't now if many people know that KZbin automatically normalized the audio level when you upload a video to match there standard. You can see in when you right click on a video --> Stats for nerds --> Volume/Normalized. You can see how much KZbin turned down or up the volume to match the -14LUFS and -1dB. But it's still better to make a proper mix before anyway !
@MrAlexTech

It sure does but if I remember correctly, it'll only bring the audio down, it won't bring the audio up. So you won't get crazy loud videos on KZbin, but you will get super quiet ones

Thanks Alex! I know you've probably filmed it already, but if you've got time to address this in your dialogue leveller video and you haven't: - I have never used it because when I try, I find that it makes the dialogue track very choppy... Like you can very clearly hear it turning certain sections up, because you hear the noise level increase... and it also seems to work on a clip-by-clip basis, so unless everything within a certain clip is a very similar volume the whole time, it will actually make some peaks or lows WORSE because it sees an average and turns it all up, or all down, within that clip... I dunno, I can just never get it to behave so... if you could chime in on that, I'd LOVE it. Love what you do, thanks!

This is fine for many people who are pressed with time or don't know much about audio. However, there are better and more effective ways to ensure your audio sounds the best it can sound. One of the key things to do is to do gain staging using a VU meter (plenty of videos on KZbin on that subject) and then use a compressor, you might want to do some corrective eq (cut off frequencies below 90 or 100hz then do a notch down at about 1khz and a notch up at 350hz). Then again do some more gain staging before adding a limiter on the output (there's more than that that I do usually). Gain staging is crucial in order for processors like compressors, eqs and limiters to perform at their optimal capacity and should be done at every level of processing. This is actually one of the key techniques that separates the pros from the amateurs...

Great vid as always Alex. When I showed how I edit audio levels manually with keyframes (for videos typically 1-2 hours+), a "professional" chimed in and they were horrified that I was doing it manually. They recommended plugins like Izotope RX, Hornet, and Bute but when I started looking into them I quickly felt daunted. Would love a video from you on these but I know that's probably too niche of a topic

Personally I will never use this feature but you explained it really well. I prefer to use compressors and limiters on the master bus so you have more control and can preview certain sections (or the entire track) before render. Using the normalise or optimise feature is a bit hit and miss, and its not until you playback the completed render do you hear what it's done to your audio.

The Normalize feature is good for beginners who are not use to mixing audio. But I would still suggest users to learn how to use the EQ, & compressor & makeup gain to get the best audio levels. Or use any 3rd party plugins that help you mix audio as well. But I found the stock plugins in the Fairlight page does an amazing job overall.

As a music producer/engineer for 20 years who got into KZbin (and DR) in the past few years... Fairlight's tools are frankly- very limited. I always end up rendering my audio tracks out and mixing in Bitwig or Cubase. At least they added sidechaining with this recent update...

I've been struggling with my audio in my last few KZbin episodes where I've tried to use the KZbin Standard settings. When Publishing I discovered that my stuff was considerably quieter than all the other episodes in . Now that I know the difference between the Normalise and Optimise buttons this may solve my pain. I did learn a new trick with my current masterpiece of mixing music and dialogue which you may or may not know about. Not only do you lower the music levels but you push it out to sides of your headphones/speakers. You then get your dialogue and squish it into the centre of your headphones/speakers. You really focus the mono'ness of your dialogue. This way you create a little sound tunnel for your audio to punch through the music.

It is tempting to use these. But I tend to prefer to do things old fashionedly. And I use compressions and limiters on tracks and buses as I see fit to level things out and having my sound interface at a reference level (volume knob straight up in my case), listening through the track. If I don't feel like I need to adjust the volume knob during playback, I deem the mix to be good enough level wise. It is a bit more work and manual labour. But, it's like driving stick shift cars. I just prefer the control. I know that any mistake in the result is mine and I know what I need to learn for my next go around. But for folks with tight deadlines and who can't set up reliable listening monitors because of time and money and desk space, I very much understand the need for these automated tools.

If there are any birders out there, my suggestion is to not use Optimize. My experience is that it'll sound like you twisted the wrong knob in the audio compression settings. It will tone down the occasional bird calls and raise the background noise level in-between. Leaves rustling, you breathing, squirrels farting in the distance... you get the gist. If you adjust the volume between your clips (the "analyze audio" function is helpful) so they sound kind-of similar, and make sure the peaks of the bird calls are the same-ish, using the Normalize setting for KZbin export is the best option. The main benefit of this is that KZbin will not recompress your audio because it detects peaks over their threshold. YT just won't allow too loud audio and will normalize it automatically with whatever compression and bitrate it chooses. But it will not increase the volume of quieter clips. Preparing your audio will give you control, as well as making the upload processing faster.

This is exactly why I got into 32bit floating point capable recording hardware. Now I can be certain I will never peak and destroy my audio and I can go back and modify the levels without losing quality in editing. Since I tend to have lots of, let's say personality in my videos, I go from quiet to loud very often. So finding a good balance can be difficult. I am very curious about the dialog leveler video! But I will also be experimenting with upward and downward compressor simultaneously to keep whispers still audible without turning up the gain and keep screams from being disturbing. I am currently working on a sound isolation box for my computer to lower it's noise level for the upward compressor. I also use open broadcast software's noise suppression filter which can work very well but once you start using upward compressors or high gain it starts to lose its effectiveness and introduce artifacting.

Never used this function to be honest. I do my voice over in Audition and level it there to -3dB. Apply maybe some compression. If there are spikes I use a hard limiter. In Davinci I do my mixing to meet -16dB Lufs. -14 is for KZbin but I got 2 down so it is not so much in your face. My vo ends up being -12dB to -9dB. Music around -30dB. And SFX also around -30dB. That works fine and it won't startle people at 3 am in the morning. Pro Tip: Use a program like Rust Desk to live-stream your audio from your desktop to your mobile, so you can test your mix without needing to render the whole video first.

I found the other day if I selected the whole audio timeline - say the dialogue track, and then go to the normalize optimise as long as "independent" is selected and it will render each segment/clip to the selected level. and give a much better overall balance. Still need to look at long clips but it's pretty quick

Some really important caveats: -The audio levels Resolve is shooting for are targets, not guarantees. If you are delivering for a client project, you should check your levels after export and not just trust that it's right. I've personally found it to vary a few db and lufs from the set parameters, so don't just assume if you set it to -14 lufs it's going to land there, especially since going over parameters (especially TP) can get your files rejected. -If you are trusting the optimization or normalization to bring your dialogue levels up, it's going to raise the noise floor with it. In short, it's fine for youtube or personal projects, but don't trust it for professional deliveries IMO

is the normalization on the raw tracks or POST-FX on the main bus when rendering? as i need to do a decent amount of processing on my audio (de-noise/EQ/comp/limiting) normalization in the past has resulted in quite squashed sounding and loud/harsh audio, which is why i stopped using it and just using my ears to get levels on my video consistent and to where i think it should be, if it's normalizing the raw tracks before any processing that'd explain things better, as that would completely mess with compression/limiter levels great video as always Alex, learnt so much from your channel on editing

awesome video! thank you. Now what about normalizing the audio directly in the timeline? before exporting? if you right click the clip, you can select the youtube preset in there as well. You'll be given two options, relative and independent. I'm aware of what they mean, but, having done either of those, do you think it would be necessary to also do another normalization when exporting? Or it won't do any difference? Thank you in advance!

well not exactly the same thing, probubly close enough for goverment work. LUFS [Loudness units relative to full scale] measures all the audio excludes audio below 8 LU, and LKFS [Loudness, K-weighted relative to full scale] measures the loudness with out the sections below 8 LU, the differnce is between 1 and 2 LU over all. They differ in there use between the International Telecommunication Union [LKFS] and the European Broadcast Union [LUFS], for you youtubers it is mostly irrelevant but for you guys making movies, and broadcast they differ for a reason, LKFS are necessary for voice stuff like conversatins ECT and LUFS for well lets just say ROCK AND ROLL. Also the EBU suggested that the ITU should change the unit to LUFS, as LKFS does not comply with scientific naming conventions, Where a higher dynamic range is necessary it is all in the mixing, so no matter how you normalize you had better learn how to mix.. Savvy? The dynamice leveler is a very quick fix to you guys who run and gun, and are editing in the field and need to deliver quickly. However there is no substutite for compitent audio mixing that is why you see those large Fairlight consoles, make no mistake. compitent normalization practices are essential for good quality audio, so why not audomate it when possible, the one thing missing here is record it right the first time, some things are a lot of work to fix, if you clip the recording when you record it it is stil clipping when you bring it down and if too quiet you bring up the noise floor with it. so spend some time and record it right the first time so these tools are most effective. but i am sure that is more than you are intersted in < J

I've been mixing concerts for nearly 40 years and I've never heard of the LKFS loudness scale. Seeing that how a person perceives how loud something is not only is based on how well frequencies are balanced but is also subjective for every person for many reason, down to the shape of their ear canal, I wonder how they determined what the standard is that this scale is based on. I don't see why someone would normalize their audio during the render, without knowing how it's going to turn out. I always normalize as I edit, mostly manually, and a final time when I'm ready to render. The final time is when I'm more likely to have Resolve automatically normalize for me, and then it's when I'm on the Fusion page by right clicking on a track. But I suppose for someone who's not familiar with the process, having the normalize happen during the render is likely easier. Another very informative video. I had never noticed those options on the deliver page before. Thanks

Based on some comments the reason is If KZbin doesn't acknowledge your audio levels are within their standards they will process your audio and that will add a little time on the upload but most of all some randomness to your video's audio.

Does Normalize know when you've used things like thresholds in the dynamics in Fairlight to automatically reduce peeks? Or does it work based on the clip levels? I never used these features because it's not clear just what it's doing and I like complete control. If I have quiet parts that I can't hear I always find that the Soft Clipper in Fairlight is the best tool to boost it without affecting the levels at the top.

Remember they are kbps, "ps" being per second. How long are your videos? Depending on the changing pixels on your video from frame to frame you could get away with less kbps. For instance a talking head with B Roll with slow movement you could get away with about 5mbps, while on a sports clip with a lot of panning, people moving and transitions you would need at least 8mbps to let it work. Aquatic sports on detailed Sea waves could need even more. You would use a lot less bitrate the smaller your resolution, speed and detail. 720p would need a lot less to have detailed movement. When you are being limited on delivery size you have to do tests per video and specially watch transitions on movements so the image doesn't break. Take into account the perceived resolution public will watch. If they will project on a big screen far away from people you may not have any problem using less resolution so you don't end not having enough bitrate, because that would break the video on fast movements and that would be really noticeable. Also what format are you exporting to? If you are exporting to Quicktime (resulting in .mov files) try instead MP4. I have noticed non apple devices tend to work better with MP4 and maybe that fixes the techie's problem. I encountered a client who wanted FHD videos of about 15 min. of no more than 15 MB because that was the settings of previous videos they were supplied with. Told them if they knew how to do it they could do a fortune on youtube teaching everyone how to do it.Sent me the original video and was above 900 MB.

Maybe this is a dumb question, but... is this different from right-clicking the clip on the Edit tab & selecting "Normalize Audio"? I do that because then I can see/hear directly, while still editing, where I'm at & add further refinement with the mixer, compressor/limters, EQ & whatever - all before exporting. Am I missing something?

Same question as me below lol. Think we both do it same way. Seems you have more control then. And you can listen to the results before render, upload.

Sounds like compression. What if you're audio is for a horror film and has jump scares where the audio is intentionally louder? Not a good idea to use normalize or optimize?

Normalize only changes the gain, so totally safe. Also he mentioned that if you put work into the sound scape, you should not pick optimize...

Your version of Davinci Resolve 19 does not look like mine. It looks exactly lile the version of Davinci Resolve 18 that I used until a few weeks ago when I switched to 19. Also version 19 Fairlight page is so different from version 18 that I can't make heads or tails about it. I would go back to version 18 because it was fine for what I edit.

The audio band should be in a different color, sometimes it is not visible when the audio wave is high.
