Absolutely loved Big Brother back in the day. you were amazing, and absolutely deserved to win. Level headed and a true gentleman. If only BB had stayed with the same format... and I hope the new BB reflects on those years gone by and realises the early ones were the best, with normal people off the street instead of the wannabe famous people... :-) x

In the annals of UK reality tv show moments this one really was momentous, when you watched it live for the first time. As a viewer watching week after week and knowing things that the other housemates didn’t, it really was a dramatic moment when Nick was finally called out.

I remember that there was a task to write a song about the housemates as part of the weekly shopping budget, which had to be completed and performed in like 24 hours. While Tom was on his own in the bedroom with a chalkboard writing down lyrical ideas, Nick walked in and wrote a name or two on his chalkboard. With that Tom simply said “I know what you mean Nick” and wiped it off.

I remember when this happened how outraged everybody was at the time. I guess it showed the integrity of people back in the day. I also remember wondering at the time was Nick a plant for Channel 4 to spice things up if needed. Like how did he even get a pencil into the house and how would you even think a pencil would be useful going into a house full of cameras. Craig is a guy of pure class. As someone with a brother that has downs syndrome it really touched me the story of this prize money. Anyways great video thanks for posting!

I remember during week one when all the housemates were called to The Diary Room to be briefed on the voting manipulation rules, only for Nick to sit there raising his eyebrows looking all shifty, only for Big Brother to say “Do you have anything to ask Nick?”, only to say “No” and leave. I thought nothing of it at the time, but when the highlights were repeated later that year, I then thought “He planned it from the start!”.

It was so great to see how well you did after Big Brother Craig but even Nick did kinda well after (obviously not in your league but still) He now had a UK reputation as a pantomime bad guy and i remembering him in shows playing up his Nasty Nick persona. In regards to him having the pencil then i wonder if he had an incareration in his past? He was certainly experienced in the usefulness of a Prison Wallet!

Actually I have another question, I know you subsequently took part in Channel Five’s Back to Reality in which you were reunited with Nick. I watched that show and thought it was brilliant how reality took over and the producers , it seemed, were struggling to keep control! Nick escaped and locked himself in an office on the set, and I remember the rebellion against the producers. It probably wasn't much fun to be behind the scenes on that show but it made great viewing! I'd be interested to hear your recollections of that, and specifically I'd like to know whether it was as strict as Big Brother, or whether you were allowed internet access and communication with the outside world?

Remember this well.... I think this was a more innocent time when Big Brother was a new and unknown TV show and at least in part a social experiment, and you and the other housemates went in there not knowing how big it was going to become, or that it would turn you into celebrities. Nick was in a way more in tune with what the show was really about, i.e. that it was a game show,and his behaviour pales into insignificance compared to how subsequent housemates behaved. At the same time I totally understand (from my own experience of group dynamics) the sense of betrayal that the rest of you felt in a situation where you all felt exposed and vulnerable. A couple of questions: do you think the show itself became too nasty? I was reading just yesterday from a former housemate on one of the more recent versions, about how the producers deliberately induced distrust and paranoia, and how the experience has affected her mental health since. Nick also gave a talk in 2005 to psychologists and students at Glasgow University, about how he was, as you have mentioned, adversely affected and the dangers of taking part in these shows. I'm interested to hear your take on this issue? What advice would you give to somebody thinking of entering? What made me switch at the time to feeling sympathy rather than hatred for Nick, was when he showed his vulnerability and also owned up to having made a mistake, and attempted to apologize, but at the time none of rest of you appeared to be able to forgive him, based on what was shown, and were still so angry with him even after he had apologized. Maybe to do with how you felt you'd been made fools of for being so trusting in the first place? I'd be interested to hear your thoughts looking back...
@MrandMrsDIY

Yes definitely! I think because it was the first of its kind, nobody knew the long term impacts of fame or anything particularly from a reality tv point of view. But after almost 25 years of a variety of reality tv formats they should hopefully have a good handle on what to tell people applying about long term psychological effects the shows may have
