Just building my track layout and gathering all the tips and ideas I possibly can. This is a very good idea I’ve been experimenting with this type of banking and it does help the racing. The wood shims are brilliant thank you.
@stéphanemantovani-q3s5 ай бұрын
Hello Anthony, I'm Stéphane, a French collector who contacted you in 2023 for general information about the layout of your circuit. As regards the trick you use to improve speed in the bends...but it's an obvious one that I used a long time ago. I quickly realised that when the bends are all flat, the cars easily leave the track and you have to control the entry speed. So I came up with the idea of raising the outside of the curves I was using by taking what I could get my hands on and trying to have more or less the same height raised on the outside throughout a complete curve. The principle of your wooden shims is of course safer because you have calibrated these shims and the work is cleaner under the circuit, once it has been laid in its setting! It's a more "professional" and very useful trick... Well done!

You can also do off cambered turns using this method to add some realistic effects .
@MrAramsey49793 жыл бұрын
Steve I was thinking about this a few days ago. You are right. I just made a change to my layout recently by adding more curved track and I reversed the cambered turns and the impact was significant. More challenging turns for sure. Thanks for your comment.
@timlang71203 жыл бұрын
As a builder of wood routed tracks, this is the best idea I have seen for enhancing racing on a plastic track. FYI have you ever seen a perfectly flat straight on any real racing circuit? Put those shims on both sides of the track just before or just exiting a corner for even more excitement!!
@MrAramsey49793 жыл бұрын
You're right Tim...it makes for exciting racing. However, it wasn't my idea. I simply learned from someone else who was doing it. What I think is really cool is creating negative camber on curved track. It requires good driving skill. Your thoughts?

This is a great way to incorporate banking. Stacking and getting a higher angle would increase top speed through the turns as well. Putting some shims down the straights probably wouldn't add to the performance, but adding some elevation changes on the straights, including some cambered straights (one side higher than the other) would make the racing more interesting.
@MrAramsey49793 жыл бұрын
Thank you Paul...changing elevations is a great way of increasing the complexity of your layout.
@silentstormstudios4 жыл бұрын
Nice looking layout. Well done. And this idea of using the Home Depot carpentry shims under the curved track is a great one. I can't believe I hadn't thought of that as I used a million of those shims when I was building my deck. I also like the idea of insetting the track in foam board or homasote. I hate how the track looks just sitting up on the table. This provides an extra level of realism when using plastic track.
@MrAramsey49794 жыл бұрын
Hey Heath...hope you and your family are doing well. Thanks for the kind words. The shim makes a big difference. You're able to come out of the curves faster and it better represents real racing. Real circuits have gradient incorporated into the curved areas. Secondly, if you send me your email to aramsey4979@yahoo.com I'll send you a few pics of my layout construction. Oh by the way...I did a terrible tracing my track on the foam board. It was supposed to be 1:1 tight fit. So I improvised and used aquarium sand as run off to hide my poor tracing skills but it actually makes it look better. Thanks again.

Hey Jim thanks for the compliment. I didn't use a layout planning software but I hear that Carrera has a free software that others like. You might want to investigate it. My thoughts on the subject is as follows; determine how much space you have currently, tape the surface area so you can see it mentally, and start laying out different configurations until you find something you life. I know that's exactly what the software does but I like working with my hands.
