To be fair with Bethesda moders, the game is being held together by patches and the hope of the community so even a small change can break a lot. It can be really infuriating when there is an update with very little content and coming after years of no changes.

Right there with you. Mods are supposed to be just that: modifications. Lets see what the new base game will play like before we go off the deep end about mods, shall we? This is especially true for mods that mess with the game's balance one way or the other. Immediately having access to those mods right after a major update that significantly alters the challenge structure of the game could make the game unplayably hard or boringly simple. Getting a feel for the new "normal" is imperative to actually experiencing the game properly. After that, each person can apply mods as they need/want in order to still have an enjoyable gaming experience. How much you wanna bet that many people will complain about the game's balance immediately after the patch without realizing it is broken because they applied mods without testing?

B42 also changes how mod content is handled by the game. Once it drops each mod can contain changes for specific versions, meaning from then on updates won't break mods for older versions. A modder just adds a folder for the new version, copies the content from the previous one, and makes the necessary changes.

I honestly wonder how Bethesda makes it so mods don't break on updates, seriously Skyrim, Fallout 3, Fallout New Vegas, Fallout 4, mods made for them using the regular mod tools never need updates unless they use a script extender. The problem with mods is that behind them, there’s a person like you or me, who usually works or spends most of their time on other things, and the little free time they have is dedicated to making mods. What I mean by this is that the more updates a game gets, the fewer mods there will be-whether it’s because the modder has decided to stop making mods, their life doesn’t allow them to, or they’ve simply lost interest in modding. That’s why I hate companies that are fully aware their games are 90% mods and 10% the base game but still don’t hire anyone or commission the modders to officially add their work to the game. I just hope that, out of the 300 mods I use, all of them continue to receive active support. We should be far more grateful to the people who willingly invest their time in giving us 100% free content, no matter the game.

My issue with the next update is not because a update is happening. It would be because the mod authors do not make a new copy of the mod on a new page leaving the previous version for 41 separate. That would break old saves with modlists.

Doesn't project zomboid allow to pack several version of mod into one workshop page? For example Anthro masks addon have 3 versions inside of it, and Firearms Maintains and Cleaning have 5 - standalone, and 4 addons for different weapon mods compability. So I'm sure that you can just put both b41 mod and b42 in the same download, and just enable them in your game separately.
@Dezkoi8 күн бұрын
@@Jedai_Games issue is those modders can take collections down via steam tos. Many don't mod pz anymore or simply don't respond to requests, or do not have previous versions available when modders update their mods, not all but enough to cause issues (fun police on steam love reporting this stuff too, not always the modder)). Same issue "space engineers' has for its workshop. Not everyone makes a new workshop page for new dlc updates. So even tho PZ can swap, the mod lists per version, the mod itself might of been updated to 42 only. Hard locking b41 worlds or severely damaging them when the mod is removed either forcibly by steam workshop side deletion, or by the user. Many mods made to update old one too, for example mods by deceased users that were updated by a 3rd party, have been removed even with full credit and links with a explanation of the situation.

Reapplying those edits can be anywhere from "nontrivial but doable" to "completely impossible, requiring a full rewrite." My own roleplay chat mod, Commandeer - Roleplay, was designed to not require duplicating or replacing any base-game code, making it compatible and hopefully update-safe... but even then I can't be sure how much they'll change the chat code. I had cut thousands of trees and began placing floors down through the forest southwest of Ravenscreek to make a road for all players on a multiplayer to drive through. one exception to the unupdated mod thing is with maps. It's not currently possible to modify public-facing maps without using a special non-publicly-available tool, so any map makers who have left PZ and are unreachable will likely have their maps be inacessible indefinitely.

Fallout 4 updated in this year, a sort of next gen update to make the game run better and look better, and this broke many mods, some of them i loved like visually seeing the weapon you have holstered (including modded guns). The majority of the mods are fine, and the mod community added tags for mods that don't work, so it's really easy to create your modpack and enjoy the game with mods with zero problems. In any case, each mod needs to be updated by the creator, depending on the thing the mod does it's going to mean remaking the mod, or just updating a few things, the mod creators can link the fixed mod so that way people are able to switch organically when someone else takes the mod. It's really that simple, The best people can do is try mods and leave normal comments, saying they liked the mod but it doesn't work in a certain version. The worst the community can do is leave negative reviews and demand modders to update the mods, because modders are going to see that and they have all the rights to hide or delete their entire catalog of mods.

Most Paradox games (Hearts of Iron IV or Europa Universalis IV) have this every year. They bring out a new DLC that makes most mods not compatible for a week until they are updated again. Also I think this is just a good way to clear out alot of mods which have not been supported for a long time.

Thanks for making this video. It does help to answer alot of questions, especially about the maps. I do still worry though. Iv been playing zomboid since around 2015/16 and just like rimworld when a major update happens inevitably some mods will be left behind. Its a shame, but this will mainly only have long term effects on people like myself running 200-400 mods at any given time. The vast majority of popular mods will be updated in time. Usually first 3 months. A big issue you will run into are mods that require other mods to work that aren't updated yet. All this being said ultimately im glad to see another major release for zomboid. Ill update and try it out for a bit, and probably downgrade back for a couple months till things get sorted on the modders end. Though project zomboid is an amazing game vanilla and genuinly may be the best zomboid game to have ever been created once you have modded a game to a certain point its really hard to go back.

Adds a quasi-goal to long term play. 3. Handlebar's Preppers by Handlebar - Adds a nice risk/reward to taking out zombies for rare/uncommon items. Honorable mention to Bunnysuits Enhanced by Lily. It fixes the clipping and inventory texture issues.

Some mods will not be updated. That always happens. However, many times other people step up to replace the mod in questions. There was a library for Stardew some years back that was used by everyone. The guy that owned it had a mental breakdown on the forums and just up and left taking the mod. No one had a repo or anything, so the community got together and recreated. I expect we will see the same for Zomboid. Unlike Stardew or Skyrim there are Many! Duplicate mods on the workshop that do the exact same thing.

There's a lot of mod creators that have stated they are preparing for 42 and have put a temp halt on 41 updates. Really a non issue. I'd actually like to start 42 as plain as it comes then later add mods anyway to get used to the new mechanics. I believe you can play 41 still anyway by selecting the build from the steam options. Go to options, betas then select a build from the beta participation options. 3 mod choices is hard. Maybe proximity inventory, britas and the auto ones like auto mechanics, auto reload and auto tailoring. That's like 6 but yea, I can cheat a bit by lumping them together. :) k15's vehicles deffo need to be brought over. I'm sure some mods will become redundant as they will be incorporated into 42 but it will also open a window for new mods for the new mechanics and areas that we just don't know what we need yet until we play the game.

2:02 HEY THATS ME! HI! LOL I've been watching some content of Zomboid and I want to start again, seeing SOOOO many insane amazing and polished new mods come out since the last time I played, but yep, just like Cyberpunk, I know the moment I spend a week getting 300 mods sorted out and tested for the perfect full-fledged experience, that Build 42 is finally going to come out after like ten billion years, and said pack is gonna be a broken mess. Don't get me wrong, I know obviously 1) there may be some that will work, as always out of the box (amazing!), but 2) a lot will obviously not since its such an expansive update. And because it's been SO long, there's (already many I can see) a huge chance that a lot of wonderful mods will just be in "mod graveyard" abandoned and never relevant again. This generally wouldn't actually be much of an issue, as it could be like Minecraft where if you have something you have you just sit on that version/modpack and play. But because it's all tied to STEAM .... Even if you set "Build 41" in betas instead, it'll be totally borked as steam auto-updates the mods and now you've got like half for B42 only, and half outdated for B41. It's just FOMO really, at the base of it all. All the new things to come & be updated to version match, but all the abandoned greats of past that might not see another author take the reigns and update it.

There is a main issue with the maps, the cells size changed from 300 tiles to 256 tiles, so the actual vanilla map will increase in size to 20 cells more, which will change every modded map not only origin cells, but it will need to be reworked cell by cell due the change of the sizes.

I am genuinely afraid of losing some niche mods with low subcriber count, but I'm hoping that they will be updated sooner or later. As for my favorite mods, I won't mention the more obvious ones such as Weapon Condition Indicator or BetterCarPhysics, because those are loved by everyone and will obviously be updated. I also cannot mention just 3, I am subscribed to close to 600 mods and there are many that I can't live without. The ones I'll mention are small mods that add barely noticeable QoL changes, but I really appreciate them and want to let their creators know it. 1) Add Fuel Faster!: My favorite mod. It does something so small, yet, it saves you so, so much time. It makes adding stuff like ripped sheets or small tree branches to campfires way faster. 2) Metal Convert: Lets you turn metal pipes into metal bars, small metal sheets into scrap metal, and viceversa. I hate there not being a way to get metal pipes quickly, but metal bars being everywhere. This mod solves it. 3) Desterilize Rags: Ever had 100 sterilized rags that you can't use on anything else? Don't want to just delete them? Want to give them a better use? Problem fixed. 4) Fencing Kits!: Lets you build wired fences much more easily than in vanilla. This mod hasn't been updated since 2022... 5) Irrigation pipes: Lets you automatize farming. Last update: 2022. 6) Lingering Reflexes: A mod inspired by Lingering Voices, this adds rare zombies that can talk and open doors. It was also last updated on 2022. 7) Better Vehicle Repairs: Lets you repair certain car parts that cannot be repaired in vanilla, such as heaters and lightbars. 8) Undo Mask Exclusion: This one is kinda op? Or at least it breaks a bit of immersion. But this lets you wear certain head clothes and accesories that otherwise you can't in vanilla. It's like "The glasses stay on" mod, but expanded. When I say it breaks the immersion, I mean that sometimes masks will clip through each other, especially when they're from different mods. And I also see this being somewhat op in B42, as it will let you wear glasses and masks at the same time, nullifying the new short sighted trait. 9) Known and Collected: Another GOATED mod. It can be confusing at first, but when you get used to it, it's impossible to go back. It basically tells you if: you have already found a book/vhs/cd, if you started reading it, if you have read it, and best of all, it will tell you if said item will give you any xp. No more watching tapes expectint to gain xp. Also, it lets you get rid of all of your duplicated maps. 10) Driving Skill: I don't really know if this mod works, I haven't had the opportunity to reach past level 3. But it was last updated in 2022, and I'd like to see it available for B42. 11) Standardized Aiming XP and Standardized Reloading XP: Must have mods in my opinion. Know that xp gain reduction you get (for no reason) when you reach aiming and reloading level 6-7 (don't remember which one)? Well, these mods get rid of that. It's not op imo, as you still need a lot of grind, it's just more fair. 12) Vanilla Vehicle Enhancer: Not a small mod by any means, but it was last updated 2023 and I'd love to have it for B42. 13) NoirsAttachments Attach Guncases: For some reason I don't like Authentic Z, and prefer Noir's Attachments. This mod adds something that the base mod misses. It was last updated 2022. There's also another one called "Addon_Noir's Attachments for multiple backpacks" that adds compatibility for a bunch of mods, but since it was last updated two weeks ago I don't think it needs its own spot here (though it deserves to be mentioned). 14) Use spears and baseball bats as fuel!: If only the title gave us a hint of what this mod could be. Last updated on 2022. 15) Sleep on it: Lets you get rid of boredom and depression by simply sleeping. Makes a lot of sense. Last updated on 2021. 16) Easy Laundry: Yet another absolutely GOATED mod. Instead of manually putting every clothe, you right-click on a washing machine, pick either worn or carried clothes and instantly everything is inside. It's like the cherry on top for when coming home after a zombie massacre and being too tired and lazy to decide what to wash and what not. 17) Fashionista: I think this one is pretty popular, but it lets you create a character using any clothing you want from the start. Also "Even More Everything Colors". With these two mods you'll be able to expand your character creation by a lot. 18) Tree Chop Bug Fix: Not sure if TIS will fix this bug, but if they don't, this mod already does it. 19) Save Backpack Attachments: I take off my backpack with 16 expanded slots, each with its own item attached to it. Imagine equiping the backpack again, and then having to attach everything back again... 20) Nutritionist Magazine: WE NEED THIS FOR B42!!! Basically lets you become a nutritionist after reading its magazine. 21) Reorder Containers - Backpack Orders: The game is unplayable to me without this. 22) Container Tooltips: ANOTHER GOATED MOD, I LOVE THIS ONE, I CAN'T PLAY WITHOUT IT. Basically tells you the name of a container when you hover the cursor over it, even if you're are moving items. Helps you organize inventories soooo much. 23) Make Paths: Pleeeeeease update this one. Helps a lot when you don't want trees growing in the middle of your path through the forest. 24) Smokers Have Cigarettes and Drop That Cigarette: Not sure the way B42 will rework the smoker trait, but these two mods make it more immersive. The first one makes it so you spawn with a few cigarettes as a smoker, and the later one overhauls the smoker trait, by making it worse. You'll cough loudly and will need to smoke more often, but you can lose the trait if you stop smoking. 25) Descriptive Tooltips for Skill Levels, More Descriptions for Traits and Clear Description for Moodles: Very popular ones, but I'll still mention them. 26: Auto Reload, Auto Sewing and Auto Mechanics: Automatize these boring tasks so you can actually hit level 10. 27) You drive, I sleep: Lets you sleep in a car that your apocalypse buddy is currently driving. Last updated in 2022. 28) Knives are not made in China: Makes most short blade weapons have better durability. I recommend this one specifically because there's another one that modifies the screwdriver, which ends up screwing (pun intended) other mods that require the screwdriver. 29) Sleepy Moodle and Monkey's Out of Breath Moodle: Lifesaver mods. They add a moodle for when you're about to reach the tired/exhausted moodles. Instead of going all-out against a horde, you'll know beforehand that you're about to feel eepy sleepy so you don't get that -50% damage penalty midfight. 30) Reorder the Hotbar: Everyone knows this mod, but if this isn't in B42, I'll riot. 31) Backpack Borders: What can I say? Must have for me. 32) Axe Overhaul: Lets you gain Axe skill xp for chopping down trees. Makes sense, right? 33) Ammo Logistics: Lets you put ammo boxes in stacks, saving a lot of space. It just needs 3D renders for the stacks and it will be perfect. Last updated: 2021. 34) Manage Containers, Nested Containers and Rename Containers: Perfect, must have mods. I'm getting tired of explaining what each mod does, just look it up yourself lol. Though I'll say that Rename Containers pairs extremely well with Container Tooltips. 35) Stack All: Combine all your thread and other consumable items so that you make a lot of space. Last updated in 2021. 36) Faster Hood Opening: Sometimes you just don't have the patience to wait for the hood to open again after closing it accidentally. 37) Open Ammo Boxes While Walking: This should be vanilla tbh. 38) Replace Bandage: Save time and lives with this epic mod that lets you either replace or replace and disinfect a wound in one click! 39) Better Hand Wash: Consumes less water according to the type of item you wash, even your body. 40) Better Towels: I absolutely HATE that I dry my sweat ONCE and then my towel gets FULLY DRENCHED. WHY??? This mod fixes that so that towels last around twice as long. (Honorable mention) Cerberus Pack: I love that mod, the most badass-looking equipment ever. And there it is, my list of mods that I want to have for B42, but also that I'd just like to share with you. I hope you find use for some of these mods, or at least that someone will read this monstrosity of a walltext.

1. Firearms B41 2.More Traits 3. Skill Recovery Journal. All 3 of these easily extended my playtime into the hundreds of hours ive spent alone and with friends. They fundamentally fix parts of the game I have an issue with, or rather the things vanilla lacked. Firearms B41 made figuring out where gun stores are worth remembering, gave way more flavour to probably the most essential weapon type for late game survival and made it more believable that you were truly in a rural Kentucky where the second ammendment would be like the gospel. The fact that it also uses weapons that would be period accurate to the time is a huge bonus as i kinda find mods that add things that would be anocronistic to 1993 to be less appealing. More Traits takes the kinda bland traits vanilla has and significantly expands on them, and actually allows you to falavour you character more with more specific skills and advantages you want for you character rather than getting an extra point or 2 into a skill. The negative traits are also way more punishing and allow you to really create a more flawed and human character, its honestly great, and it also works with dynamic traits which can make the character creation possibilites even more expansive. While Skill Recovery Journal is a bit cheap and can kinda remove some of the punishment from death in the game, which is a pretty huge tagline for the game i know. But IMO its kinda essential for multiplayer games where the game can take a significant amount of tweaking to begin with to allow for a better experience when you cant just fast forward a la Sims style. Allowing your friends to record their hard earned skills so that the experience doesnt devolve into grinding a new character cause you got bit, has allowed me and my friends to sink longer playtimes into the game without that frustration. And in singleplayer, i think it can still allow for a fun in depth world building moment since you can name your journal. Finding your journal packed with your previous survivors knowledge is kinda like giving your new character a survival guide of how not to die the same way the last guy did. And the fact you can tweak the settings means you can decided how helpful it actually is to your new survivor, so with all that said while for some it may cheapen then experience, i think its essential to my enjoyment of the game in both SP and MP. So i hope these ones are easy enough to bring into B42, cause these 3 would probably be the bare minimum for me. While the game is an amazing foundation for a survival game, the incredibily talented modders are the unsung heroes for keeping this game limitless in its scope of enjoyability. TLDR; If i didnt have these 3 mods on launch, i would wanna Bleach > Drink > Drink all

Rimworld gets updated around every 1.5 years at this rate with DLC, and Rimworld has a very large backlog of mods. Whats great about that modding community is it has become standard practice to let your depreciated mods become adoptable and a handful of people go in and update it. I’m talking about tens thousands of mods being adopted every update and years after, it’s truly a sight to see. The infrequency of updates is actually both a boon and a curse as earlier in the Rimworld days the game would update every 3-4 months, mod makers got burnt out and the community got pretty annoyed so it was eventually extended until 1.0 and subsequent DLC/free updates. The downside is there is a greater opportunity for mod makers to drop off the face of the earth (and possibly not put their mod up for adoption) between the long periods of time between updates. Some people still get frustrated by game updates on heavily modded games, to those that complain about having to re-make your modlist you are weak and have low sperm counts, deal with it, wait a few weeks, play vanilla to explore the update. The real problem is all of those mods that will never get updated, some talented work out there will forever collect dust and be forgotten about because they will never be updated. The best and only solution is to spam and annoy the hell out of the modder to update it or put it up for adoption. Spread the message to every modder out there to have an end-of-support plan and have it available for adoption. Lastly, this is especially prevalent to PZ modding, don’t make them comment locked. You are not helping anybody. More than likely your description is lacking information that could be addressed in a comment. If you don’t want to get spammed by people then don’t mod. I plan on making a map when B42 drops and I’ll be accepting the spam because I will likely make mistakes, need to add compatibility, or just get recommendations. The communities that inhabit these mod-heavy games are genuinely nice and understanding even if a bit illiterate at times.
@Tom-pu3ks5 күн бұрын
This is a big reason why I think that, not only should all mods be developed in open-source (thus making forking after inactivity easier), that PZ or other developers should in fact mandate open-source as a prerequisite for modding on their games in the first-place. Modding communities can have really toxic obsessions with their creations even though what they made isn't even possible to begin with if the original game didn't exist. I remember a fairly prominent mod on another game where in order to actually download it, you had to go and ask for permission from the creator on their Discord. This mod was also a dependency on other mods, which was just absurd that one weird personality who demanded some sort of fealty was seen as a beneficial thing for the modding community. Open-source should be the default. The point is to get working mods out there, there's no monetization here and IP that you need to hold on to that makes it anywhere necessary to be closed-source.
