They made a huge huge mistake, fatal mistake by convincing themselves that their son's bizarre behaviour is completely attributable to his multiple drug abuse; they believed that he is behaving in this weird manner under the influence of narcotics. They failed to take into account permanent psychological damage he already had which was only further exacerbated by various drugs.

I used to take Ambien. I started sleepwalking, ended up outside in the middle of the street claiming a friend was picking me up (it’s 3am and I’m wearing boxer shorts, tank top, w/o shoes). I also started to believe my bedroom had a ghost. I bought loads of crystals and sage to try “clear/cleanse” the space in my room. Once I stopped taking Ambien, I no longer experienced these things. Smh 🤦🏽‍♀️

I am not surprised, I live in Ireland and our mental health services have failed people and society too many times. A guy in my hometown was clearly unhinged, a danger to society, and should have been sectioned/helped years ago but it was like Austen, ignored and brushed over. It too ended in a blood bath when the guy finally snapped and after our mental health services were harshly criticized for not stepping in earlier.

Sometimes, parents would rather have a drug addict than a mentally ill child. I think he was schizophrenic which was brought on by the drugs, mainly THC. That often happens to people at about age 17 or 18.

Austin’s family is outrageously irresponsible. If my kid was acting like this, and I was in a position of having to lock my bedroom door because he’s pacing outside guarding me from demons, I sure as hell wouldn’t be going on about normal life. And when his mother finds him chugging vegetable oil, she just drove him back to the restaurant?? I would have taken him directly to the hospital because I’d be thinking he’s either having a psychotic break or he has a brain tumor. When someone is truly insane, they can’t identify that for themselves and make a sound enough decision to seek help on their own; family and friends are literally the only hope in those situations.

I think that in this case, the difficulty is that the kid was in college. Not being around him on a regular basis by his family, where they could not observe his actions, definitely was an issue. His peers at school were probably just thinking he had gone off the deep end and just refused to associate with him. There is no doubt in my mind that there is more to the story and he was probably on some type of brain eradicator, but, obviously, those who sold it to him or gave it to him will never come forward. I wouldn't say that you are wrong, but you have a point. Maybe, it was the mother who made him into what he became. On the other side of the coin, many kids are traumatically damaged from their parents going through a divorce as in this case. The reality of the situation is that dead is dead and the dead are not coming back. In the old days, he would have had to pay for his crimes with his life. The justice system we are hovering under now will probably want to rehabilitate him. How, that would be unknown, but he certainly cannot be released back out into society where he could have the opportunity to do it again or even worse. The mind altering drugs were his downfall, along with poor self esteem. This is not an excuse by any means, but my comments are based upon the way this story is presented. It was definitely parental and a non communication issue on many levels. Once he was on drugs, some of these psychotropics, or compounds which act psychotropically, are so powerful you only need to take them once. I really have a deep sympathy for the loss the family had to go through. I understand where they want him to be completely lucid mentally, but you are dealing with someone who is loony tunes. His demonic story could be totally faked for sympathy. It almost looks as if he was possessed by a demon. He could easily be biding his time, acting like he is being rehabilitated, only to wait for the right moment to escape and continue with what he was doing. I do not think wishing him to have a clear mind is the answer.

I too, blame the clueless parents for not packing him up and taking him to the hospital. It just freaks me that she just took in back to the restaurant and dropped him off to his dad; at a public place. A restaurant. Drinking all that vegetable oil may not be poisonous but it certainly is abhorrent behavior. I wonder if his parents were so set on normalcy, not showing cracks that it compelled them to just not see what their son was going through right in front of them. "Here, you deal with him. He just drank all of my vegetable oil. I've had enough!" Thats one possible reaction. But what if it was more apathic? The parents just didn't ha c e the tools, didn't know who to turn to for help. Vyvanse is a drug prescribed to people with moderate to severe concentration issues. It can make a person feel very paranoid too if misused. Or in combination with prolonged lack of sleep and heavy caffeine intake. Being a parent and having made a few parenting errors myself, there's no way I wouldn't have taken my son to the hospital that very evening after I wiped the vegitabke oil from his chin. I'm sorry this family is suffering, so.

I was so frustrated with the lack of action Austin’s family took on their own son. They kept on ignoring his obvious signs of distress. The footage of them at the restaurant shows just how neglectful they were, especially when Austin’s friend was the one that chased after him and not his own father. When my sister had a psychotic break and was showing signs of schizophrenia, my parents didn’t hesitate to get her to a therapist and psychiatrist. It wasn’t long before she was put into an outpatient treatment center. She was released and put back about three more times before she finally got the right treatment to make a successful comeback. And even then she was heavily monitored. The house was clean of any knives, pesticides, etc. It disgusts me that Austin’s family did absolutely nothing.

Not everyone has had to deal with someone who was an addict or someone with such a high level of mental health issues let alone the dual diagnosis. The DID get him help with his addiction, they were going to put him in an involuntary 72 hr mental health hold at the hospital and they, from what it seems, didn't just abandon him. Stop trying to point fingers when we don't know what we'd do in that EXACT situation.

So many of his friends and family watched him spiral into madness and instead of getting him help, they just acted like he was fine. At any point they could’ve gotten him to see a psychiatrist or something but instead they chose to do nothing. If I had a friend or family member that acted that way, I would definitely try to get something done. Never underestimate the willingness of people to deny a person is mentally ill. Many people are incapable of sensing or acknowledging a loved one is mentally unwell despite the significant red flags. Mental illness typically starts manifesting in late teens and early 20’s, and often times the changes in someone can happen seemingly overnight. If someone you’re close to starts acting strangely (fine one minute, making odd or incoherent statements the next), do whatever you can to get them help. And if someone *IS* asking for help, take them seriously!

I am appalled with how Austin's family handled his Insanity. 1- They knew he was seeing demons at night and instead of trying to understand what was wrong or trying to help, even just listening to him, they locked the door leaving him alone with whatever was tormenting him. 2- They knew it wasn't the drugs and yet they waited a whole summer to consider getting professional help. 3- Once they were at the restaurant, Austin's family let him wander for half an hour without following him after he almost ran into traffic. 4- The mother saw him drink vegetable oil and didn't think to immediately take him to the hospital like, fuck it let's skip the formalities, I need to know what's wrong with my son, instead she brought him back to the restaurant with the same people who left him unattended. 5- I would be worried sick after all these signals and what did the father have to say? "What is wrong with you?". Like Austin could control his actions and he was doing all that on purpose, like he was a liability to them. The whole reason they were sitting around that table was to figure out how to help him, not blame him. . The whole crime took place because of the lack of support from Austin family. I hope that now, during his detainment, he will get treated for his illness. R.I.P to Michelle and John

He was brave, but still let Austin get back up and still ran away. So he was brave, but not smart. And the cops, they could have kneeled and shot parallel to the ground into Ausin, with the bullet trajectory never being in danger of hitting John, as he is flat on the ground. That's just basic middle-school geometry: a line parallel to a surface never intersects with the surface. Every human being over 12 years old should know basic geometry. I don't know if the cops couldn't subdue him or shoot him because they were also elderly (being in Florida) or they just knew they didn't have good aim. In the end, people tried to help, but were too incapable of doing so. The dog is the only one who was somewhat effective.

Drugs can trigger underlying health; AKA teens smoking weed can actually “triggger” schizophrenia. IT CAN NOT CUASE IT but can trigger it and cause more SEVERE symptoms at a younger age. There is also drug induced psychosis. Either way its CLEAR that he SHOULD have had help. I think; could be wrong; but i think a lot of times if someone doesn’t show signs of aggression and are more a danger to themselves and it comes and goes it can be confusing. I have experienced someone being a danger to self and appearing to be delusional but then they are fine and i questioned if i was exaggerating or triggering the behavior. It isn’t cut and dry. In my situation they got off drugs and only paranoia lingered. To this day idk what the diagnosis would be.

I’m a retired Mental Health Therapists. I retired from Western State Hospital, (WSH), which is the 2nd largest mental health hospital in America in Tacoma, WA. Years ago I had a patient who, during a psychotic break ate part of his victim. His victim survived but my patient was brutal. He was truly demon possessed. He will die at WSH. I had a total of three patients like what you’ve just listened to during my career. I was never afraid of my patients, but those 3 men were scary. I’m enjoying my retirement and though I looked forward to going to work everyday, I’m glad for retirement. WSH lost their Federal funding after my retirement so now it’s ran by a private company.

After retirement we bought 1/4 of a mountain 5 miles SW of Cashmere (between Cashmere and Leavenworth) and built a custom home part of the way up our mountain. Some good friends bought the other 1/4. The other 1/2 is National Forest. We don’t get near the rain as the left side does but we get a buttload of snow, 5-7 feet every winter so we have to plow and maintain our private road ourselves. @@cjmiller6741 WSH is a Mental Health Hospital. It’s NOT a hospital for a Sane person or to have a medical checkup or for a broken limb. It’s for people who are Mentally Unstable who are a danger to themselves or others and who have been sent to WSH because they meet the criteria and have been ordered by the courts for an evaluation of 72 hours. Then the patient has a “hold” for 90 days. Some of the patients came to WSH since they were 18 and will die there. On a few occasions we received patients who were 16 years of age, because they were previously at another facility for children. In those cases, they became mentally unstable while in grade school. When they’ve been at CSTC (Child Study Treatment Center) since childhood, when they turned 16, most of them go into a group home until the age of 18. Those few occasions when we received 16 year old children, it’s a special court case where the patient exhibits a very violent tendencies and are too much of a danger to themselves and others to be released into a group home.

Ive seen people that are threats to themselves (only themself - not even threats to others) get dragged kicking and screaming to the psych ward which helped them a lot get on track with their mental illness and theyre doing fine now, in this story he admitted he needed help to his family which is more than most people with mental illness can reason, so take him seriously, make the appointment, and take him there. take him to the hospital, call the cops and explain hes a danger to himself and others (especially since he threatened to kill his friends, and then attacked his dad), tell the cops hes acting bizarrely/dangerously. if drugs are ruled out, then assume mental illness and try to treat that. there are a lot of things they couldve done other than just locking their doors at night and bringing him back to a restaurant and just hoping hed return to normal.

It was about the same with me and my suicidal tendencies during my studies, which were out of town. I could control them and not follow up on them, but twice I was pretty close to going through with it. I broke down after a certain episode, which luckily didn't have suicidal thoughts, I decided to tell them I had something really serious going on, without specifying, and needed to see a psychiatrist. They would not believe me and tell me "how can you be so sad when you had a perfect childhood (not even close) and always had everything (we just had money)?". It took me going completely silent on them for a month (happiest period I had in the last 4 months) for them to still not believe me but at least take the stance of "well if it gets him talking to us again he can have it". I still kind of hate them for it, but at least I got the help I needed and I'm pretty much healthy now.

THE report is just like a fricking ghost story. So much happening the last week... He made a left turn and saw a white light from a garage. Mr harrouff ran toward the lighted garage to ask for help in getting home. He did not have memory of what he planned to say. But he perceived the lighted garage as an area of safety in his terror. Sadly, America has poor and inadequate facilities for people experiencing mental health difficulties. People usually only receive the help they need when in prison but by this time the 'damage' or harm has been done. Healthcare Insurance plays a huge part. Should abolish people needing to pay for healthcare because it should be FREE for everyone in this day and age. It should be a fundamental human right to receive healthcare. It's free within Canada and the UK and they offer and provide adequate treatment for people who experience mental health difficulties - frequently intervening sooner rather than later.

The family clearly witnessed Austin losing it and did nothing. The dad screaming “what’s wrong with you” at the restaurant was the only psychological treatment he got. Many schizophrenics are normal until early 20s then quickly deteriorate mentally. People tend to think drugs is the problem when it’s always mental health. Yeah schizophrenia doesnt manifest any symptoms until early adulthood, normally around the 20 years of age (Austin's age), and the family only noticed his bizarre behaviors in early August 2016... the murders occurred in mid August 2016, they didnt have time to absorb the changes in their kid and react appropriately, it takes a while!

Have some empathy. There is nothing in our society that prepares you to deal with insanity. There is little to no support or help or even a clear understanding about what goes wrong inside a person’s mind. Maybe try to put yourself in their shoes. How could they know? A similar thing happened in Sweden as well. A pair of married MDs had a love child quite in late age. They had kids who were in the teens or grown up when this child was born, he turned weird and agressive in late teens. Eventually he improved somewhat and moved to go to university. But he soon ditched his studies for drugs became homeless and such. His grown up siblings tried to encourage the parents to deny him to come home to them. They also locked their bedroom doors at the time he was at their home. Though they had sought care for him, he was hospitalized at a couple of times but as soon as he got better he was let out, and then he mismanaged his medicine, nutrition and sleep. Schizophrenia doesn't typically show up or get to the point it's bad enough to be diagnosed till the patients 20's. Usually around college age is when most schizophrenic patients are diagnosed. You're making the same mistake the parents made, the drugs didn't cause the schizophrenia, it was only a symptom of the schizophrenia. The drugs allowed him to temporarily feel relief from the symptoms of the schizophrenia. If you noticed in the story, the dude wasn't just smoking weed, but abusing all sorts of drugs. The schizophrenia likely made him brave or desperate enough to just start trying and doing everything. Remember, he wasn't an idiot before onset of symptoms, he would have known the dangers of the drugs. If he was on the up and up and mentally healthy, he would have likely never tried those drugs in the first place. Should also be noted, that a lot of people with schizophrenia have never touched recreational drugs. Source: In my life, I've personally seen the transformation from normal person to schizophrenic happen to multiple people. One of the more insidious things, the people this happens to are very often incredibly intelligent and of good heart.

I had a friend that was acting similar to this guy and I called his dad and we called the police. We thought it was drugs but he was 100% clean. He thought he was an angel and not human. He was diagnosed with multiple physiological issues and put on medication. I was convinced it was drugs but he was in a psychotic state. There are a lot of people that go through something like this and it’s scary.

I also had a friend who had some kinda episode like this. He just went really weird/borderline insane one day. He acted like this for a couple weeks, playing one note on a guitar for at least an hour legitimately thinking he sounded like “Hendrix”. He would tell us stories insinuating he was in the mafia, and would get really standoffish when confronted about his weirdness. Apparently it turned out ( according to his mother I dunno how true this is) he had a giant bag of b12 vitamins he thought was Ecstasy. I dunno if this shit was legitimately fucking with his brain or if he placebo effected the weirdness. To this day we don’t know what was really going on as the only explanation we got sounded fishy, this is the story of “Crazy Steve”

it seems like he wanted help but whatever he was suffering from did the opposite. instead of telling his family he's suffering from disturbing hallucinations, he said he was guarding them from demons. instead of telling his family he was suicidal, he said he was immortal and tried to prove it. it's sad to think that possibly because his father's side wasn't helping him properly, he went to his mother for help and she just dropped him back off where he started.
