Travelogue adventure with Timothy West and Prunella Scales.
Episode 3. The Llangollen Canal
Veteran actors Timothy West and Prunella Scales head to Llangollen, Denbighshire, where they spent their honeymoon. The trip includes the mystical hills of the Vale of Llangollen and the extraordinary Pontcysyllte aqueduct, the longest and highest aqueduct in Britain, and no place for the faint hearted.

A documentary featuring two senior citizens who are still in love is much more romantic than any Hollywood movie showcasing a skinny model and a callow young man. West's tenderness towards his wife, and Scales's fondness for her spouse, are palpable. Thanks for posting this.

Oh what a treat! Canals and steam engines, who could ask for more. I went to Ysgol Y Berwyn in Bala in the 1960s. My best friend at school caught the train every morning in Carrog to come to Bala. She had to get up so early in the morning to walk a mile from her house to Carrog station and then the train ride which was quite long, when all I had to do living just outside Bala in Rhosygwalia was get taken on a five minute car ride by my mother. This all brought back such memories. When we were about 15 my friend got the bright idea of walking across the hills behind Carrog over to the main road to Wrexham, walk along there until we got to the turn off for Vale Crucis Abbey and then come to Llangollen that way. The only problem was she vastly underestimated the distance involved and it took us all day, we limped into Llangollen after 5 pm, in time to get some fish and chips before everything closed. We couldn't walk all that way back and by then the railway had been closed so she went and asked to local vicar, whose youth group she attended to give us a lift back to Carrog. I guess he couldn't in all conscience leave two 15 year old girls stranded in Llangollen. Such memories. Some time during the 60s my mother took us all on a rowing boat trip to see Horseshoe Falls. My only memory is rowing along the canal, I have no memory of actually seeing the falls , though we must have. It made me so happy to see a train now runs between Llangollen and Carrog. It was my father, George Barnes who built the Bala Lake narrow gauge railway on the old track bed along the side of Bala Lake in the 1970s. It still runs today. After his death in 2000 they put up a plaque for him on one of the stations along the lakeside.

While I am half a world away from narrow boats, not really, I'm just on the other side of the Atlantic, I am becoming a narrow boat addict! With hopes that this feeble comment finds it's way to Mr West, I am thoroughly enjoying your adventures narrow boating and please permit me to say; your lovely wife Prunella Scales had the most beautiful blue eyes I've ever seen.

Chris thank you very much for taking the trouble of putting this series up for people who would otherwise have no chance of seeing them,my missus and l have thoroughly enjoyed watching them all. It is through the wonders of modern life that we watched these over the last month in one of the remotest places in the world in the Australian outback in Arnhem Land, something we guess Pru &Tim never would of dreamt of when they made the series. Thanks again and all the best from Australia

Brilliant! I was a bit concerned about Tim standing in a trad narrowboat rear. Danergeou for a senior I would think. Too easy to slip and fall off. That nit-picking aside, these two obviously enjoy each other and this whole series opened my eyes to the narrowboat fraternity, and I now follow "Cruising The Cut", The Narrowboat Experience" and "The Narrowboat Chef". A pleasant change from all the sex, violence and foul language that passes for TV entertainment these days.

Having seen him so often playing very rotten characters, and so obviously enjoying it (see: Pocket Full of Rye, a Miss Marple mystery, where West was beyond superb), his gigantic smile at the steam train makes me endlessly happy. What a glorious series. I've never seen nor heard of them before. Thank you so much for sharing them, Chris Cole!

another wonderful episode in this delightful series. For those from other parts of the world, the steam train, tracks and stations, as with the canals, were rescued from oblivion by the hard work and determination of so many volunteers and enthusiasts, determined that these aspects of historic culture should not be lost forever - brilliant isn`t it ?

Amazing they are doing that at their age. She's (Pru sounds like crew) kind to the horse, and puts up with him, does the lock work, etc. Sorry about the mild Alzheimer's, but remembers the past, only short term for now. Bumper canal boats, and other issues...

Ah, trains! Just started then paused to comment. Yeah, I'm not a big fan of things like being so close to the edge of that aqueduct; put a towpath each side and I'd be cool with it -- heights themselves don't bother me, it's only their edges I have issues with.

susan webb Hi Susan, the advert of support at the end is regarding Pru's mental health issue. She is suffering from mild form of Alzheimer's and Tim mentions it a few times during the series at the beginning of each episode, it basically is a pointer to a website to find some possible help for anyone suffering from Alzheimer's or mild dimentia caused through age, like Pru 😕
