I was making notes from this - but due to my own drowsiness I wrote 'storm on the Ireland' rather than 'storm on the island', and this made me realise that 'island' sounds like 'Ireland'... and this was screaming out deliberateness to me! So maybe Heaney is relating his title to the conflict, or in this case the metaphorical 'storm', in Ireland

Yeah, I think the title has something to do with the government in Ireland, its context to the poem.

My personal thoughts on the essay: The introduction was good, holy shit it was good! The idea about the Seamus Heaney's voice in parliament was also really good, however the rest of the analysis was just overwhelmingly long with too much in them. More than half of the quotations were never analysed even though there were plenty to talk about. Too many ideas in the sentences. Sounded like the person was trying to dump all their ideas for marks.

Storm on the Island VS. The Prelude ( I COPIED THE INTRO 😢) the power of nature and humans is represented both complexly and proactively in both William Wordsworth's work and Seamus Heaney's 'storm on the island'. between the two they represent nature as an unparalleled power, however, Wordsworth's poem is a philosophical revelation characterized by abrupt fear, whereas Heaney's poem is an illustration of uniform identity in the adversity of fear. storm on the island regards the struggle of man as he sits in the await of a merciless storm, a 'bombardment' and 'salvo'. the poet points out that fears are small in a rather grand scheme. the prelude relates to how man viewed nature as a beauty but his judgment was evaluated when he was exposed to something bigger than him; a mountain 'black and huge'. the prelude, written by William Wordsworth who wrote poems based on ideas that challenged the way people thought and lived this would be regarded as being a romantic poet a contrast of what we might consider. storm on the island, however, was written by Seamus Heaney who lived and grew up in Northern Island most of his poems were based on homely subjects. his poems use natural and agricultural images as metaphors to explore human nature. however, Storm on the Island, however, is a complete contrast to his previous poems. the first 8 letters of the title of the poem stand for STORMONT which in disguise is a pun. STORMONT castle is a mansion on the Stormont estate in Belfast as the capital of Northern Island linking it to the IRA attacks on Britain which could be deduced as an attack from different Christians factions. IRA and Northern Island were amongst the protestants sect whereas the British were mostly Catholics. surprisingly the poem was also written in 1966; the year the IRA attacks took place. the prelude is a romantic pantheism which in disguise explores the fact that 'Did God create the world?' or does nature just cease to exist as it is too powerful as the 'huge black peak, black and huge'. both poets consistently use language in their poems to a desirable extent in order to achieve their desired effect. in 'storm on the island' the language used is rough and rural giving the speaker a more agricultural tone. the third line, 'the wizened earth has never troubled us' the poet describes the earth almost like an old friend, personifying it like an old friend. similarly, in the prelude, the boat is a metaphor of man's influence, still anchored by the tree representing nature. there is a further metaphor used the term 'elfin pinnace' can be translated as 'fairy boat', a metaphor for the now heated mood of the poet. Elves were often viewed as sexual and lustful. in the closing stanza of Storm on the Island the final verse, 'Strange it is a huge nothing we fear' the oxymoronic effect suggests man's fear is a paradox, we fear the nothingness of the invisible wind. the prelude, however, ends with how 'by day, and were trouble to my dreams' the poem has overall changed from Euphony to Cacophony. both poems are written largely in blank verse.in 'storm on the island' all 19 lines are written this way. there are 5 feet (10 syllables) in each line. both poems have no rhyme scheme and therefore their poem has a very controversial tone. seamus in his poem includes the use of asides to help the reader enter his conversation and become a means of comfort against the merciless storm. seamus also uses a great deal of enjambment to add to the controversial tone. Wordsworth's poem, however, uses iambic pentameter to give the poem consistent pace. overall both poems use nature as a tool to explore their desired emotions and thoughts. in both poems, nature is shown to always be the more powerful in the end as its ruthless mercy stands for no-one. in Wordsworth's poem, the poem symbolically uses the journey on the river in order to mirror the poet's own journey of reflection. The poem is structured to show the contrast of the serene and peaceful start where he works with nature, to the dark and disturbing battle with nature shown from when he tries to control his journey through rowing. in Heaney's poem, however, The cottage represents safety and calm and behind its walls, the violence of the weather is undermined. It reflects a conflict between nature and man. The poet is able to communicate a sense of calm friendliness using asides and very recognisable imagery to describe the attack of the weather.

Could you also say that storm on the island uses nature as a metaphor for the power of man, suggesting gratin some ways man could be seen as more powerful than nature (or as powerful as nature), whereas extract from the prelude suggests that nature has complete power over humans, that we rely on it "tied to a willow" and that it can easily overpower us?

These two poems are way to complicated. They are by far the worst in the whole group. Why can't poets just make their feelings clear instead of hiding them under layers of meaning?!
