If anyone thinks they might need this: 25 Language Devices: Defined & Explained! 1. Pathetic Fallacy Is when the weather or the atmosphere describes the mood. For example, when the weather is rainy people are sad and depressed 2nd example, the dark night could symbolise something supernatural like 3AM Satan etc… 2. Personification Is when a non-human is given human qualities. For example, the tree is waving to John as drives away. 3. Simile When you are comparing two things using ‘like’ or ‘as’ For example, his facial vision looked like a falcon’s eye 4. Metaphor Is when you are comparing two things with is or are Example He is an orc 5. Extended Metaphor Pick a metaphor and explain how --- > turn in to an extended metaphor Metaphor --- > Life is a rollercoaster. Now turning into extended metaphor add explanation so, Life is a rollercoaster you don’t know when you will be at the top or at the bottom, it will all happen in an instance, at the greatest heights you will be at the greatest heights and at times it will crash, but every day is never the same, just like in a turn in a Rolle coaster is never the same. 6. Oxymoron 2 opposite words side-by-side Example, the small giant 7. Juxtaposition You explain an oxymoron. The small giant tip-toing trying to reach the top shelf, however, his small arms and puny fingers prevented him from grabbing the bar of jam. 8. Symbolism Is when objects represent a meaning. For example, moon and the star represent Islam. 2nd Example, if you get a priest you will think someone died. In Macbeth the dagger links to death. 9. Semantic field Is where words are linked to an idea. For example, PPE, 2m and Hand Sanitiser, Head of Year link to COVID. 10. Irony Is when events in the text surprises the characters. Something not expected! Mr Birling offering a 1000. Scrooge changing his nature. 11. Rhetorical Question Question does not require an answer 12. Hyperbole Is when you hype, when over-exaggerating. I am going to eat the whole restaurant. 13. Assonance Is the repetition of the vowel sound. I am too cool for school. Oooooo 14. Alliteration Words in a row begin with the same letter. 15. Sibilance Is when words in a row have the s letter or the s sound Example: the snake was slowly hissing 16. Euphemism Is when you say something in an indirect manner. He is not with us anymore. 17. Emotive Language Is when the writer makes the reader feel emotional. By making them angry. 18. Onomatopoeia Words describe the sound Boom bang skirr pop 19. Ruel of 3 / Power of 3 / Triplets Words or phrases in a row describe something (3) The table is black, hard and wide 20. Facts/ Stats Uses evidence to support their facts. 50 % of the students prefer using email rather than social media . 21. Plosive Reptation of harsh sound Words such as 'P' 'D' 'B' 22. Zoomorphism Is when you give a person animal features. Example John barked at me / John shouted at me. 23. Opinion 24. Repetition Language Device and Structure. Is when the writer uses the words repletely to create an effect. Where is being repeated and why is that important 25. Noun, Verbs, Adjectives, Adverbs Structure Flashback - when you go back in time ,3 days ago etc.. Foreshadowing - when the writer gives clue about future ‘my heart was beating fast’ Zoom in - focus on one thing for example ‘pen’ , ‘specific character ‘ Zoom out - normally used to talk about setting Dialogue - when the character speak ‘hey there !’ New character New setting Change in tone Short sentence - to build up tense Long sentence - add details and slow down the narrative Short /long sentence - may show importance in both Shift in focus - talks about object then talks about another object for example ‘pen’ to ‘table’ Cyclical structure - similar stuff happening with beginning and ending Juxtaposition Extended metaphor Pace List Pov Overall tone Chronogical order Climax Repetition Links Mood , pathetic fallacy 1. Abhorrent/Heinous (means bad) 2. Euphoric/Jubilant (means happy) 3. Melancholy/Morose (means sad) 4. Indignant (means angry) 5. Swift/Rapid (means fast) 6. Colossal/Gargantuan (means big) 7. Minuscule/Microscopic (means small) 8. Bemused/Befuddled (means confused) 9. Astute/Shrewd (means smart) 10. Feeble/Decrepit (means weak) 11. Dash (means run) 12. Plunge (means jump - may not always fit so be careful how you use it) 13. Cordial (means nice) 14. Lackadaisical (means lazy) 15. Paradoxical/Outlandish (means strange)

when you open the paper. spend 5 mins reading the text. spend another 5 boxing off seperate parts of the texts for specific questions and then write sub headings for each paragraph. this allows you to have a good idea of what each paragraph is about. also mark the points of where the exposition, rising action, climax and resolution are. then write the time allocated for each question above the question u are answering. so if im answering question 2 i will write 10 mins from above that question and if you want to write the exact minute you want to fiish the question make sure you dont go overboard. also remeber to always pick write a story AND NEVER pick write about the image because thats wayyyyy harder.

I hate this question so much😪 how do you explain how someone makes a text sound interesting?????
@michaelluder46705 жыл бұрын
Simple - the commenter, mma, uses first person perspective to give the reader insight into the protagonist's feeling by opening with the powerful simple sentence "I hate this question so much," which effectively shows the mounting pressures and difficulties faced by the impending exams. The text ends with multiple question marks to express their innermost toil and puzzlement. This leaves the reader with a clear understanding of the bewildering challenges faced by the gutsy student. Also, the clear pseudonym choice of the writer, "mma", may hint to their outlook that life is a battle, regardless of the arena. (The psuedonym point might be a bridge too far! 😁)

Here are some useful questions to ask: What is the first thing the writer wants me to think about? Does this create a specific mood? How does the beginning of the text prepare the reader for what is to come? What initial impressions are established regarding mood, setting, and characters? In what order are events or ideas presented in the text? How does this order influence the reader’s understanding or engagement? Are there any noticeable shifts in time, location, or perspective? How do these shifts impact the reader's interpretation or experience of the text? How do structural elements contribute to the build-up of tension or focus in the text? How does the structure of the text reveal or conceal character development? How do structural choices impact the reader’s empathy or understanding of characters? How does the text conclude, and what is the impact of this ending? Does the ending leave the reader with questions or is it more resolved? What elements of the structure contribute most significantly to the text’s overall impact?

A good structure to use (separate paragraphs for each) “In the beginning of the extract…” “In the middle of the extract…” “Near the end of the extract…” Good things to talk about is focus. What does the writer focus our attention on and why? And zoom. Why does the writer choose to zoom in on this particular object?

You need to be careful with this approach. The November 2018 exam report stated: 'Students who did not do so well frequently used phrases such as 'at the beginning', 'in the middle' and 'at the end' but then narrated too much of the story, rather than considering not only what is happening where but the reasons why, and how reading about this at this point added to their understanding of the text as a whole.'

@@mrbruff My teacher was insistent that we use this structure as a way to signpost that we will be talking about the whole of the source. I would go on to say something like: “In the beginning of the extract, the author focuses our attention on the bizarre nature of the house by zooming in on the door “with no handles” “ Would this be fine?

Sir I have a question and I’ve gotten so many different answers I just need clarification. Is repetition a structural device? Thanks a lot
@tanyadsouza92305 жыл бұрын
yes it is

only if it is used throughout the extract, then it is known as a motif. Otherwise it is still just repetition.

also i literally do not understand how peiple write this in 10 minutes how do you have time to even come up with those points and write three separate paragraphs in the space of 10 minutes AND explain each of those points with evidence. i never ever get to finish the paper because time is such an issue for me. can anyone give advice?
@JE-iv8ge2 жыл бұрын
Well you are most like going to be rushing the first half of the paper because you are thinking about not having enough time for q5 so I recommend doing question 5 first then the others after (whatever order you think is best for you) this is what helped me not to rush and screw up my answers. then I found I had enough time to complete the paper because I wasn’t panicking about not the whole time, does that make any sense? Sorry I’m not very good at explaining things

when you open the paper. spend 5 mins reading the text. spend another 5 boxing off seperate parts of the texts for specific questions and then write sub headings for each paragraph. this allows you to have a good idea of what each paragraph is about. also mark the points of where the exposition, rising action, climax and resolution are. then write the time allocated for each question above the question u are answering. so if im answering question 2 i will write 10 mins from above that question and if you want to write the exact minute you want to fiish the question make sure you dont go overboard. also remeber to always pick write a story AND NEVER pick write about the image because thats wayyyyy harder.

William Donovan well remember to explain the effect it creates and if you’re really stuck just put the shifts in focus at the beginning middle and end. Remember to use quotes and don’t zoom in. Just explain the overall effect it creates for the reader. Hope I helped you a bit? Just stick to timings as well. Try and get three paragraphs done but if you don’t manage to if you have time at the end go back to it. Good luck tomorrow.

What paragraph structure would you recommend using for this question?
@mrbruff Жыл бұрын
I don't think there is any set paragraph structure you 'need' to use. Ultimately you must write about structural devices in the text and focus, in detail, on the effect they achieve.

Sir, in these 8 marker questions, is an alternative interpretation a must?
@michaelluder46705 жыл бұрын
No, not at all. The highest marks will only be given for "perceptive insight" though so if you want 7/8 marks you will need to write in detail, with some originality e.g. link quotes or features to themes or motifs within the text.
