The ironic thing is that sending criminals into the Phantom Zone is what replaced the death scentence on Krypton.

They were offering to free them, but not unconditionally. They basically had Superboy as a hostage. The Phantom Zone is just a horrible prison though and completely unethical.

Even after all was said and done, they still were going to free them from the Phantom Zone ,but place them on Trombus aka a world with a Red Sun so they could rebuild, but not get maniacal with the power of a yellow sun all the while keeping tabs on them... Too bad, Vandal Savage intervened, and now they are his yet again, prisoners in stasis aboard the War World...Man, they really can't catch a break.

That was during a horrifying run-in with Durin's Bane (a giant flaming demon of Morgoth called a Balrog) at the bridge of Khazad-dûm in Moria during the Fellowship of the Ring from which that terrible battle nearly costed Gandalf his very life. But permitted the Ringbearer Frodo and the Fellowship to escape from those dark and dreadful halls that were once a proud ancestral home to the Dwarves, seeking refuge in the woods of Lothlorien for rest and recovery. After defeating the Balrog, Gwailhir the giant eagle found Gandalf and brought him to the Elf lady Galadriel for recovery and gave him both white wizard robes and a new white wizard rod(staff), making Gandalf more powerful than ever before. And at the same time, Galadriel gave him the news about Boromir's death (right when he tried to take the Ring from Frodo and almost got him killed due to it's evil temptation until redeeming himself), the abduction of both Merry and Pippin's at the hands of Isengard's Uruk-hai of Saruman and the Fellowship being broken apart on different paths (Frodo and Sam were journeying to Mordor alone while Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli went chasing after the Uruks to save Merry and Pippin).
