It was my first radio restoration and I knew the alignment was off from the beginning but didn't want to tackle that so I put it away. (Sorry Paul, once I need to try something. Remove this if you find it unfitting:) Hi Fran, do you know what shadow banning is ? Some are treated like that for years on your channel, for no reason. I can see my reactions there, but no one else can, including you. I found out after two years. THIS reaction on Paul's channel is the closest I can get to tell you, unless I open another platform account (Twitter, Facebook), which I refuse. Maybe check your e-mail accounts, I wrote to one of them to tell you. Hope to solve this somehow, Erik.
@erikdenhouter4 жыл бұрын
Well, no reaction at al. It seems that there are corners build into KZbin that just don't 'exist', but I still found one after being misled for two years. And Fran is in it; I can speak, but no sound is coming trough, I am only allowed to 'watch the Fran community', while there is clearly a text field that says: "Add a public comment...". But as soon as I watch Franlab trough another computer, all my comments there are gone. Weirdly misleading. Thanks Paul, in any way a great channel here :)

Mr. Carlson's experience with tubes and tube equipment really shows. Not many people could look at the tubes and immediately know that they weren't in the right place and then know which ones to expect in the various stages of the radio.
@hestheMaster4 жыл бұрын
I always go by a schematic to make sure stuff is where it should be. Here the components were replaced by substituting modern replacements but failed to note where the tubes went and bodged the radio up in a failed alignment. It also helps to take lots of photos before and after of the work while progressing with a shotgun job of component replacing especially around the tubes. Sure way to solder a part to the wrong place.
@pneumatic004 жыл бұрын
There is a subtle, but very important lesson involved here. Imagine how long you could spend troubleshooting that radio with the tubes in the wrong sockets? What would you do, knowing that it had been worked on? Even if you didn't have the back-story, you would see those bright yellow caps underneath and know the set had been worked on. *Once you know that, you have to know there is literally NOTHING you can take for granted*--but again, does that mean you have to check every wire, every solder joint...? I myself have worked on plenty of AA5 radios (mostly the 7-pin tube versions and this was 30+ years ago) but still, there for sure was something odd about the audio out tube and rectifier right next to the tuning cap. I will admit, it didn't jump out at me right away. I *think* I would have tried to get a schematic online which would probably have the tube layout and etc; etc; etc
@hestheMaster4 жыл бұрын
@@pneumatic00 Never assume anything! Just because someone worked on a radio and you see new parts in the underside don't assume they replaced a part with the right replacement part. Go over every circuit in the schematic to make sure it is right, make sure parts are where they should be and wired correctly to tube sockets. I give you an example of something I found in a newly acquired radio from 1948. A resistor was going into a solder joint and I wiggled it. It was just loose going through the joint of solder !

This takes me back to my days on the farm in the 1950's when I used to watch my father as he overhauled engines to make extra money from the neighbors. He taught me a lot about mechanics, and, of course how to farm. One thing he always drilled in about working with farm equipment was to insure that all the screws and bolts were tight before you began a days work. So, for example, if you were going to mow, you went over the mower with a wrench and screwdriver and tightened everything so it would not work loose as you mowed the fields. When I first began tinkering with radios in the early 1960's after we moved to town and got electric power, I transferred that learning and messed up the radios I worked on by doing the tighten the screws thing after opening up the cabinet. I quickly learned that this advice does not transfer to electronics. I guess it takes a few screw ups, especially if you are working, as I did with no advice from anyone in the know such as is available today with the many how to's available on KZbin.

RCA model 65X1 from 1948. Tube compliment : 50L6/35Z5/12SA7/12SK7/12SQ7 . From the label that was on the bottom, " For Finest Performance USE ONLY GENUINE RCA RADIO TUBES" I found Mr. Carlson's ability to find tubes put in wrong places fascinating and I hope whomever did that never turned the radio on! But that person did mis-tune the radio and screwed it up! Definitely needs an alignment. Work was only half way finished. It would make sense to put in a polarized plug, switch the "hot" side to the on/off switch, and add a fuse on the hot wire coming into the radio. Make it safe!

When tens or hundreds of thousands of people watch a video its an absolute certainty that a small but significant number of them will be one or more of: in a terrible mood, not very bright, clicked by accident, completely or partially misunderstanding something that is said, actually clinically mad etc etc. In short, when, as I write, the like:dislike ratio is around 200:1, there is no need to worry or even pay attention to the 1.

Yes Paul, I for one would love seeing you do a full alignment on that radio. Over the decades I’ve seen a variety of procedures - some appeared to have been unnecessarily longwinded, and others were direct and to the point. So, my reason for requesting a full alignment is to see your method, or procedure, so I might improve upon what I was taught some forty-eight years ago: that being, having fed a given IF frequency (here in the UK it is usually 470kHz for LW & MW), using a signal generator, and either a scope or VVM for measurement, I begin adjustment with the IF transformer associated with the IF amplifier valve. When the signal is peaked I move over to the IF transformer associated with the frequency changer valve and make adjustments to peak the IF frequency, and maybe move back and forth no more than three times whilst avoiding altering the bandwidth. My procedure for setting the oscillator to correspond with the dial is to feed in a given frequency (usually prescribed on the circuit diagram) to determine how far away it is from the printed frequency numbering on the station dial, and if is off frequency, make adjustment (also usually prescribed on the circuit diagram) so as to chase the frequency in so it peaks when it corresponds with the chosen, or prescribed number, or spot on the dial. That is what I was taught when I was a seventeen year old. It will be interesting to see what you do should our procedures differ. Thank you my friend, Phil.

I have changed filter caps in both radios but they still aren't acceptable. One more thing: The radio in this video has tubes like the 50s... that were put in to do away with the need for a power transformer. I have a Ward's Airline portable amp that I got at a yard sale that was built that way. It was a revelation to me that this was done to eliminate the power transformer. It took me a while to understand the reason. I wonder just how many of your fans have discovered this.

Enjoy these videos very much. I have restored a few myself and it brings back memories when I work on tube radio's and TV's when they were new(!). The sad thing is that the FCC wants to do away with commercial AM broadcasts and convert then all to digital (HD radio). So they all will become just decorative pieces instead of a wonder work of engineering. My 1950 Zenith has such a warm and wonderful sound that just can't be recreated without tubes.

Yes, it will be, nice to see this radio fully working again. So a BIG yes to a full alignment video :)

I’ve got an early 40’s GE 740 radio I want to restore. It hums so the audio amp seems to work! Time to test and recap, measure resistors, etc. thanks for the inspiration! My 35 year career was in electronics but I started after tubes were used so I have very little experience with them

Just for curiosity, how did you get started in electronics?

That would make a fascinating book and movie!!! The Life and Times of Paul Carlson!

How did you get started? My dad had a friend who was an engineer, he gave me an old radio and electronics handbook, I couldn't understand most of it at the time but I used to fall asleep reading it. Went on to become an ET.

On a previous video Paul mentioned he used to work for a company doing reverse engineering of electronic devices... ohhh maybe AREA 51 reverse engineering alien tech

I think Mr. Carlson was born with a SL6 in his mouth instead of a silver spoon. ;-)

Very instructive to me as a total novice to see the demonstration of the sequential physical arrangement of the tubes in the circuitry. Will be interested to see the full alignment. I have been given a 1932 Zenith AM short wave radio which I would like to bring to life.

Such a clean set, thanks for the reminder to taking notes. I find that some tube identification numbers rub off the glass envelopes so it's mine habit to pull one tube at a time and light mark the with a pencil.

Sometimes you can recover rubbed-off tube ID nos placing the tube(s) in the freezer.

I love your vids and when the alert popped up i was here in a flash (no pun intended). I really hope you'll tackle that AR88 soon, as i have two of those beasts that i want to service and align.

I need to reduce my notifications of other channels, I almost missed this! I wish youtube had a 'priority' button so we can have certain channels like Mr. Carlson at the top of the list

I vote for a complete tuning if you can. As always Paul GREAT! video, Thanks!

I spotted it as soon as you took the cover off! "That looks like an oscillator tube in the middle of the IF stages". Having worked on dozens of AA5 style radios as you mentioned in the video most follow the same arrangement v A7/K7/Q7/ Output. :)

Some years ago I rebuilt an RCA 16-X-1, which is very similar to the radio in this video except that the 16-X-1 has an RF amplifier and a high-low tone switch. The best part was that it worked right away, although it oscillates below about 800 to 900 kHz. Maybe someday I'll deal with that if time permits.

Yep love these old radios. A tune-up .Wipe the Dust off and it will run for another hundred years. And in the cooler weather it'll help warm the house up a little.
