Mr. Causey explains the importance of significant figures and demonstrates how to determine, recognize and write significant figures or sig figs. Also learn the rules for determining the significant figures in calculations. Using sig figs in your calculations helps to maintain the integrity of your data. As you begin to add, subtract and multiply you also introduce error. It is the significant figures that help maintain the balance.

What if you will round off 5654.7 to 3 sig. Figures? Will 4 turn to 5 then 5 will turn to 6 or since 3 significant figures is ask, will I not consider the 7 and so, 5 wil stay as it is? What would be the answer? 5660 or 5650?
@mrcausey
@mrcausey 4 жыл бұрын
If you only have three sig figs the answer would be 5650

In measurements and data collection there is an important difference between an assumed decimal point and a written decimal point. There is always an assumed decimal point but when collecting data a written decimal point means that the tool being used to measure has a certain precision. 200 means that the tool was not very precise and not very useful. However, 200.0 means that the tool could measure to the tenths place and allowed for a certain amount of precision.

If I understand correctly, your tool is divided to the tenths which means you can make an estimate in between the tenths. Sig figs are all the numbers you can read plus one estimate, in your case the 100ths. Therefore, 26.55 or 26.53 are both correct.

Could you please explain this to me? The smallest division of a measurement is 0.1, maximum precision is 0.05 and 26 is a certain number of the measurement. The safest measurement is 26.5. Why would the maximum measurement be 26.50? Could it also be 26.55 or 26.60 or does it have to be 26.50? I hope the question makes sense. Thanks.

I'm confused as to why: In the sum of 54.34 + 45.66, the number of significant figures is 6. Isn't 4 sig fig the least precise used in the addition?
@mrcausey
@mrcausey 9 жыл бұрын
The rule for addition is based on least precise place value not number of sig figs. Thus in 54.34 + 45.66 the sig figs would go to the hundredths.
@timbruse
@timbruse 9 жыл бұрын
Would that have 100.000 as the answer, and therefore, 6 sig figs?

+Darrell Causey (Mr. Causey) If there was number after the zero. example 3.0005 would it be 2 significant figures since the zeros are place holders or would it be 5 significant figures? Also would 8200 be 2 sig figs and 8200. be 4 sig figs since there is a decimal?
@darrellcauseyjr.8595
@darrellcauseyjr.8595 8 жыл бұрын
Five sig figs because zeros in between significant figures are significant. In the second example twice sig figs and four sig figs
