Mr. Causey discusses how to use significant figures (sig figs) in your measurements and calculations. It is important to maintain the integrity of your data when performing calculations. You are limited by your least precise measuring device and your calculations should reflect this limitation. Therefore, when performing addition or subtraction use the measurement with the least precise place value for the number of sig figs. When performing multiplication or division use the measurement with the fewest digits for the sig figs.

Do the multiplication and sig figs, then the addition and sig figs. 5.6 x 4.2 = 23.52 so 24 (only 2 sig fig) 24 + 8.99 = 32.99 so 33 (least precise place value the ones place)

This is better than some college courses. Thanks. I realize though, if your taking a math course while taking a science course, the science calculations are some much easier. Math helps with everything.

do we convert the answer to sig. figs regardless of the units? For e.g. if im given 278.5K, would it be 5.5 degrees C or 0 deg. C (because least specific would b the hundreds place?) or 6???? and how about 80-6? would it b 74 or 70?? thank u
@mrcausey
@mrcausey 7 жыл бұрын
Okay, 278.5 - 273.15 = 5.35 = 5.4 w/S.F. The sig figs would be determined by the measurement not the conversion. 80 - 6 = 74 = 70 w/S.F. The 80 determines the sig figs. 80. - 6 = 74 =74 w/S.F. both the 6 and 80. are to the units.

+E Ninety nine I feel you, but when most folks aren't confident in their math skills, the smallest of errors throws them for a loop -- at least, this is what happens with my chemistry students, so I understand the correction, and I'm sure Mr. Causey does too.
