I have been watching your videos for a while and they bring back memories of building my post and beam house in 1985, I used 8"by8" pine for my construction but used many of the same tools and joints in the construction. Loved the experience

Watching a piece being measured up and the cut and chiseled and the final of malleting in the timber and driving home the wedges must be pure satisfaction!

The leather strop is the key to a very sharp edge. Keep a piece of white pine for testing your sharpness. When White pine is cut on end grain with no tares then the edge is sharp.

Those are awesome sharpening stones! I have a set of 8 inch ark stones but they are too narrow to do my 2 inch in one pass

I heard you mention in one of the videos that if you make a saw kerf half way through a post, it will keep it from twisting and cracking? Did that work out? This would be incredibly beneficial to me if it works

yes it works, its a proven technique from Japan hundreds of years old. You need to go all the way to the heart of the tree along one whole face, then it should open on that kerf only, no cracks anywhere else.

What about axe sharpening? where did you get your 2-sided axe stone from? Is it better to buy stones and files new? Do metal files where down with time?

I find that some "sharping" oil is extremely expensive for what it is. So I use baby oil ... works great and your tools smell like babys ;) LoL .. If you look after your tools .. your tools will look after you! Great Vid .. keep them coming.

+L Gorman Yes, most honing oils are just a mineral oil with some thinner or solvent. I mix mineral oil and citrus solvent 50/50. Really smells great and won't gum up an oil stone.

where do you buy your stones. the ones I looked at cost $100 each. I cant afford that.

I think from Natural Whetstone. If you want a cheaper option, I would go with either a true washita (it can be used alone for sharpening) or norton oil stones, you can get a fine and medium and course norton oilstone for the price of one cheaper natural stone.

Great videos, very inspirational for a budding woodworker. I just noticed though, is it Chickadee or Chicadee?
