Want a bike that goes fast but don’t want all the modern plastic looks. This may be the perfect choice! It’s quick, it’s magnificent and it’s a joy to ride.
The bonneville 1200 engine is a fantastic bit of kit, it’s makes a wonderful sound and in the speed twin it certainly goes!
In this review I tell you how this motorcycle feels to ride, the essence of the bike, how it handles, power, performance, stopping power and more. This really is the sports bike for the gentleman. It’s a respectable motorbike that would be welcomed in many circles.

Can't tell you about how the others square up, but I bought an R NineT over the Speed Twin. There wasn't loads in it, but the BMW felt more premium and was a more comfortable riding position.

I've had the Thruxton R for seven years, a BMW R9T/5 for two years, Z900RS SE for a couple months and rode a FTR 1200 about 100 miles. The most comfortable is Z900RS SE by a bit with the BMW , FTR, and Thruxton in order. Engine smoothness is Thruxton, Z900RS SE, BMW and FTR in order. Power and quickness I'd say the Z900RS, BMW, FTR and Thruxton. Handling on curvy roads the Thruxton is the best by a bit followed by Z900RS, BMW and FTR. I haven’t taken the Z900RS to the drag strip yet but I expect a 11.5 to 11.6 ET in the quarter mile with at least 140 mph top speed. The BMW was unexpectedly quick, the Thruxton unexpectedly smooth, the FTR looks a little better than it runs, the Kawasaki Z900RS SE may be the best overall but the Thruxton is still my favorite.

@@alganasanugentiran8358 I mostly do long distance roadtrips now so personally spending 200km a day on the bike is pretty normal (about 400km a day is what I usually plan for). However, it does get tiring battling the wind at 120+ km/h (for me it's about an hour and a half before I need to take a rest). At anything below 100km/h I find it quite relaxing. Depending on your height and preferred sitting position you may or may not find yourself leaning a bit forward in a more sporty stance so do go get a test ride if you're interested. Good luck!

I had this same bike (2020). Very nice and refined. People would stop me at stores to have a discussion. I rode it 1,600 miles from Burlington, Vermont to Miami, Florida two years ago. This is where I learned that a naked bike is just fine in most cases and it kept my speed down. One flaw in the 2020 was that in sport mode it would stall! Very imperceptibly just shut-off. Quite dangerous many times as I would go to accelerate and then nothing there! I read in the forums that this is a known issue. I then switched to any other mode and no longer had the problem. Otherwise, a great feeling of quality, solidity and class.

Have owned both the 900 and 1200 ST and would like to put this 5 speed/6 speed gearbox thing into perspective. The 900 ratios are wider than the 1200. The 900 in 5th at 70mph is doing 3750 rpm. The 1200 in 6th at 70mph is also doing 3750rpm (give or take) This is because the motor is slightly detuned thruxton lump with short ratios for a sportier ride. I swapped the front sprocket on the 1200 to a T120 one (up 1 tooth) to chill things out as 1st gear felt really short.

I agree with you once again about the stupid front mudguard. And I''d prefer to see the mudguards painted gloss black to match the rest of the bike. That said, it's good to see that Triumph have dialed back a bit on the brushed aluminium components, which I always thought looked cheap and a bit industrial. Deep gloss painted tinwear looks so much better.

I have a 2022 T100 gold line. A lot of people consider it a “naked bike” but I reserve that title for the Speed Twin 1200, Trident and of course your Japanese offerings. The T100 is just a sweet bike to cruise on with no particular place to go and to ride to work. It will accelerate and go as fast as I need it on the freeway and it’s just a nice, easy going engine. This weekend I rode a couple hours to a very small town a couple hours away from the big city to go eat at my favorite Mexican restaurant. It’s a bike that gives me peace.
@taylodl
@taylodl 7 ай бұрын
@@MrSpeed-lt8gr For me it came down to the ST900 and T100. The T100's tank was hitting my inner thigh in a weird spot and felt like it was bowing my legs out. The ST900 fit like a glove. It's not a bike meant for riding on the US interstate highway system for any length of time, where people are cruising 80 MPH - 90 MPH, but for riding in town or taking rides out to the country on the weekend on two lane highways? It's perfect! Like you say, ride for a couple of hours outside of town and enjoy a meal at your favorite restaurant. That's what these bikes were meant for.

Great review, interesting to hear your views which echo other reviewers who seem to prefer the 900cc engine unit. Also as a Street Twin (900cc) owner who came from a 6 Speed Yamaha, I've never found the 5 gears limiting as the engine has a wide spread of torque across the rev band and is very willing at most rpms. Just love these bikes.

I sat on the speed twin and the t120 back to back at the dealership. The t120 felt better for me. It felt lighter and my feet touched the floor better. The speed twin felt heavier even though it is lighter and the foot peg was right in the way of my leg, when I put my feet to the floor. I actually preferred the T120. If you are going to buy a retro it seems to be more of the look of a retro. My retro's are my sportster and Heritage now. My modern is my 2023 ZX4RR.

Great looking machine , the 1200 Speed Twin is a hooligan to ride , puts a smile on your face every time you throw a leg over it, the only negative is Triumph should offer it in more colour options (it's a bit bland in black, grey etc) would look awesome in the metallic British Racing Green paint scheme seen on the Thruxton.

The best looking Triumph in my opinion in this color scheme. The brushed aluminum (or stainless steel?) mud guards look fabulous. The black with the brushed metal makes it stand out. Everything black (gloss or matt) would seem very cheap to me. The mud guards look short but that simply fits the great style of the bike. Fabulous. I would even remove the back mud guard because it would make the bike look even better. Just don't ride in the rain or worse if you are reluctant to clean it. I am a nice weather rider and prefer looks over usefulness.

I was talking to a mate of mine on this very same subject only a couple of months ago. Our conclusion was that if you buy the Thruxton and modify it for comfort, you've got all the "good" bits that go with the Thruxton for not that much more money. We also reckon that they're going to hold their value better now that they're discontinued and recent sales volumes haven't been high.

@@davidbrayshaw3529 I'll have to ride one first to see if I can live with the clip-ons. I rode the original R but it was a few years ago and I only did a few miles on it. I know the top yoke on the RS isn't drilled for risers and bar clamps so it might be a case of aftermarket extended clip-ons. Definitely going to look into it though. A nice '20/'21 black one can be had for 10 grand and most of them are spotless. I think it's going to have to be done..

@@user-mf1ur7zp7h For some reason I thought that the more recent Thruxtons had fork top mounted clubman style bars. I just had a look and you are indeed correct. Interestingly, it was fitted with risers that might just suit your needs. A friend of mine has an '04, which I really love. The riding position on that is certainly "sporty", but it's not ridiculous. The engine, while not ridiculously powerful, is characterful and has enough berries for road riding. The stock suspension on his was pretty basic, and that's being polite. He upgraded both the front and rear and it was like riding a completely different bike. I can see why you would want to go for the full Ohlins package. It's a lot of bike for the money. Probably a bit too much bike for me, but I can certainly see the appeal. It sounds like you've convinced yourself of the decision. Good luck tracking one down and enjoy!

@@davidbrayshaw3529 I was looking last night and British Legends do a flat bar conversion kit for the RS. Not that cheap at 480 odd Euros considering you only get the top yoke with risers and clamps. You have to supply your own bars and depending how wide you go you may need cable extensions. But it's certainly doable. I'm sure with a bit more looking or some engineering the clip-ons could be extended upwards. I do like the look of the clean top yoke that you get with clip-ons. I think it's well worth the money to get the freer spinning engine and the Ohlins suspension. The RS has better brakes than the R too. Roll on spring.

Beautiful machine! Apart from, again, the mudguards. The front one does look nice but does not quite do its job. The rear one... well, if it is necessary to fit all those plastic prolongations they could rather have fitted a proper mudguard instead, in my personal opinion. I have not ridden any Triumph since 2016, but remember comparing the T1200 with the Speed Twin 900. The T1200 felt massively impressing in every way, although I experienced the 900 a little snappier and better suited for my type of riding. Great video! 😊

I think I'd have custom made replacement mudguards. Much longer for the front, slightly longer on the back and a bit more deeply valanced (though not as much as the T 120) so the plastic number plate hanger could be done away with and replaced with neater tail-tidy. I can think of a couple of good sheet metal workers who could make those probably for not much more than Triumph's original parts. Then I'd have them painted gloss black to match. And while I was at it I'd have the heel guards and maybe even the yokes painted gloss black as well. I know someone who did this with the crinkle-finished cycle parts on his otherwise gloss black Harley and the end effect was stunning. Made a 20 grand bike look like 30 grand. If a bike's a keeper I think it's worth making these investments and a properly functioning front mudguard will save the front of the engine from a great deal of dirt and corrosion.

Fantastic bike to ride what lets it down IMO is the styling and attention to detail. Overall it's a great looking bike I just hate the very fake looking engine - yes I get its a retro but the fake carbs and hiding the radiator and pretending its an air cooled twin is almost insulting - I much prefer the honest approach in the Z900RS. Also it just didn't feel quite "special" enough with little design details like Moto Guzzi does. Hopefully with the axing of the Thruxton they will release a high spec version of the Speed Twin.

The 1200 Speed Twin is a beautiful bike indeed. I own a t120 which overall I prefer except for the rims. I had two rear punctures this year and the spoked rim, while attractive require tubes. Dealing with that miles from anywhere is a nightmare. Not so with the Speed. When it comes to wheels I'll take function over form all day.

No question about it, it's a beautiful bike. But I'm still partial to my BMW R9T Scrambler. In my opinion, better looking bike. It's got a rugged character about it. I get compliments all the time and head turns. But the sound of the BMW Scrambler is just fantastic with the Acropovic twin exhaust as well as the torque and the maintenance free drive shaft. Just my 2 cents... But again, the triumph is also a very beautiful and well crafted bike. Wouldn't mind having one of those too! ;-)

I rode one for a weekend, last summer. I find it to be really mean, compared to my 900 as it is constantly in a higher rev-range than the smaller one, and the power distribution of the engine is really brutal if you open it up. I was honestly scared by this thing. (Might be too old for a proper sports bike meanwhile) Also, i didn't enjoy the front brakes too much, as they needed to be warmed up to work properly. But what really killed this machine for me was the cost of ownership: In my country it costs three times the insurance fee of a 900, and parts like tyres, brakes etc. are quite expensive.

It's as good as 100 Bhp! That is 80's superbike territory! If you're not "scared by this thing", you're either Valentino Rossi or a 20 year old from 1985.

'Begging for ace bars.. ..and swapping those mounting brackets around to raise the headlamp.. (what's the deal with shortening the rear mudguard and then adding an extender? ..And let's hope the rear pillion's jacket doesn't obscure that poorly placed minimalist tail light). - I do love it though, the whole package, it *looks* fast, you just *know* it'll not disappoint. Damn, that's a fine looking Motorcycle.

People harping on about the mudguards. If this bike had the T120 mudguards it would ruin the looks of the bike, imo. If you want long mudguards then buy a T120 and not a Speed Twin, like I did. Then cut them to look like a Speed Twin! 😂👍

Really good motorcycle that I want to buy, but I'll wait for the next generation model. The world is advancing with huge leaps, and I think there should be more innovations implemented in this motorcycle, starting from the instrument panel, for example, a TFT that would provide more information. Even conservative BMW motorcycles already have that. Of course, maintaining the Triumph style is always necessary, that's why we admire them.
