A balance you need to fix: Creation vs. Consumption

Imagine a world where instead of people doubling down on consuming, they doubled down on creating. That's a world I'd like to live in. Maybe you're the same.
0:00 - My switch from consuming to creating
5:57 - The role model vs. the anti-role model
7:50 - Create for the 3 you's (past/present/future)
16:40 - Creations work for you. You work for consumptions.
19:20 - Opportunity = responsibility
23:05 - If your time was $1000 per hour, how would spend it?
1. The role model vs. the anti-role model
Who are the people you look up to? What do they have in common? Is it creating or consuming?
2. Create for the 3 you's
Make things to educate and inspire your past self, which bring your current self pleasure and pride and those which your future self will be thankful for.
3. Creations are nonlinear
One creation could change your entire life's trajectory. Except it's impossible to know which (they all do in some way). The only thing for sure is it will never happen if you don't start.
4. Opportunity = responsibility
Taking on the opportunity to create things which make your heart sing requires responsibility to let go of what's tieing you down and to climb over what stands in front of you (both of these are often only you).
Bringing change in the world first requires you to say, "I'm going to do this." and then doing it.
5. You're your own boss
Would you pay an employee $1000 per hour to spend time scrolling through a slot machine?
I wouldn't either.

Great video. When you consume more and create less, you doubt even the right thought. People consume things for fun because it's available,if they really create, they wouldn't have time to watch all day...

I found you one year ago because I was on my bed thinking "I should create more than I consume"... So what I did right after was to type on Google "create more than you consume" and you popped out. Cool, it was good to find you. After one year I could say that I tried, something is actually out, but yesterday night I was thinking the same. And you post this video, today. Cool, this is the last one I watch from you Daniel. Thank you, for now. I really appreciate your uniqueness in your content. Keep going!

This is a very cool video and an important message. I'm glad you didn't demonize consumption. Totally agree that the ratio of creation/consumption is totally skewed, but creativity needs consumption to work properly. At least in my head. I get my best ideas from watching movies.

Wow, I found this video after I started working out for my health (bad posture mainly). It's really is inspiring, and even when you consume a great product you want to create something great too. I know what I want but I never knew how to put it into words, your video was a perfect catalyst for that. I never comment on videos but I had to make an exception ! Gotta go learn deep learning to make models to help people :D

6 Months later, I stumbled upon this video of yours and I have to say, this was quite the insightful piece my friend. As a consumer of the red-pill, I have begun to realize that in order for things to actually change, I would need to put what I consume, into practise and in essence, just start creating. Thanks for the video Daniel, I look forward to more of these kind of videos from you.

Hey Daniel, Thank you for making this video. It is refreshing and inspiring listen to you confront the behavioral 'norms' our societies have adopted. I'm glad and relieved this video is getting is much support I graduated college today . During my whole time on campus I would constantly use my school work as an rational to postpone personal code projects (why waste time not getting the best grades possible if that's what you are paying for.Right?). It always felt like there was a specific 'right' time (required) to start an extracurricular project, but that time was always after my next test, then pushed after the next and so on... Luckily as i begun my senior year, I ran into some like-minded productive types that helped get me out of my procrastination rut. That year, I was able quit social media, started making my bed, taking real care for my things, and quit hesitating to begin projects. The best time to start a project is yesterday. Your worst work is an empty page. The worst failure comes right before the best success.

Hey W F, massive effort on graduating my friend. So cool to hear about the changes you’ve made. Nothing inspires me more than hearing someone getting after it. Another saying you might like: A person who doesn’t take risks makes about 2 big mistakes per year. A person who takes risk makes about 2 big mistakes per year.

You presented it in a very well thought manner. It's good to keep touch with our own ethics and philosophy and work on it too. And as you said at 28:09, it'll be great if you make these kind of speaking from the heart and mind, but it's best to keep it to the optimum required level, because philosophy is a life long thing. I personally see it is a really really helpful/ enlightening topic, but I try to bear in mind that it doesn't take up too much time and thought. Again, awesome video. Good luck!

Great vid. I go by ‘ Do your future self a favour’ and live by the compound effect...5 mins each day invested in a new skill (e.g. learn play guitar) over 12 months will get you closer to your goals than 5 mins each day watching Netflix.

I got a question for you Daniel, how did you manage to really commit to your blog and how hard was to focus on the topics you write about in it (I can imagine you have many interests)? Did it just happen as time passed by and you began writing about the things going on in your life or was it a preconceived decision?
@mrdbourke

I made a decision to start creating more than I consume. After that, I looked for the story in everything. If something sparks my interests, chances are, I'll write about it. Writing is nature's way of showing how bad your thinking is.
