In general there are a lot of things to consider when putting two different brand boxes against one another. First, you have to realize that when you put one speaker at unity or 12 o'clock, it doesn't necessarily mean you are at the same volume level of another box by a different manufacturer at 12 o'clock. You would need to test the boxes and 1/4 level, 1/2, 3/4, etc.. up to full out to really get an idea of how the control knob is adjusting the "actual" volume of each box,... and always good to determine where each box begins to distort. You could work backwards from there in terms of comparable volume levels. Also, a bigger cabinet will always seem to have more low end, if the amplifier section is comparable. It actually takes a bit of distance for low frequencies to develop so the best place to really hear a sub is out in the room, not close to the box itself. Preference is always going to be somewhat subjective and it depends on what you personally need. I often look for the best bang for the buck, and what will fill the room but not take up over half the van space or brake my back! Cheers!

vjt418 exactly which is why this video is stupid at face value. Duuhhh uhhh dat one soundths better. Duh. It’s louder.
@TimpBizkit5 жыл бұрын
"It actually takes a bit of distance for the low frequencies to develop" no they are intact right out of the cab. Depending on where you place the subwoofer you may be getting a cancellation off the back wall that prevents you hearing much low bass if you are standing right over the woofer but from further back the ratio of distances changes between direct and reflected sound. This is why you should always butt your subs up right by the wall unless your dancefloor area is really far from the walls anyway. For those two they could fire the subwoofer into the corner and use it as a seat, making sure the top end of the subwoofer and the kick range of the tops are in phase where they cross over to avoid weak kick bass. I have a DBX Driverack PA+ with time delay but if you just have a basic crossover, experiment with the polarity to see which is louder at the crossover frequency.
@modernbassheads50512 жыл бұрын
Bro please stop spreading misinformation lol 1. Bigger boxes don’t always mean lower bass, you can have a huge bandpass with a small sealed chamber and high fc which means ittl roll off quick on the low end, bandpasses are always bigger but don’t always play lower than ported

I had the Eavey ETX 18" sub but sold it....not happy with ETX brands and they are definitely not what they say that they are rated at. ETX clips too early and when it does you notice the bass drop....plus is a huge box and weights 120lbs. Yamaha is nice too and is a bandpass so the bass is different but yet is also a big box and has no casters (is optional) and also harder to carry around for a mobile DJ cause of the size. So I went with the KW181 and I am happy with my decision cause I love how it sounds and at the end of the night i didn't have to carry a big speaker back to my van/truck/trailer etc like the Eavey or Yamaha or Yorkville or Jbl. Many times us DJ's are not satisfied with how are subs/tops sound (and yeah it's happened to me too) so we tend to go with a bigger box which means more weight and harder to carry around. Each DJ has their own taste which is nothing wrong with that but for me the kw181 are just right....not as big as other subs but still great and loud enough. So my DJ sound system is all Qsc for that very reason 4-k12s and 2-kw181.
@djlobb8 жыл бұрын
And you're happy with the K12's? I sold mine, when they get near limiting they sound harsh and abrasive, whereas the Yamaha DXR's sound smooth and keep their composure, especially with heavy music like rock and electronic/dubstep etc. The KW181's are great though.
@CarlosGonzalez-mq7ex8 жыл бұрын
+djlobb I sold the k12s and went with the kw12s and also bought the Yamaha dsr112. Dsr112 are very loud...louder than the kw12, so I prefer the dsr112 over the kw12 although the kw12 gives out more bass.

These subs aren't really apples to apples. The Yamaha is in a band-pass box and the QSC is a bass reflex encloser. A bandpass box is always going to be more efficient than a bass reflex enclosure but it has some negative tradeoffs. Bandpass enclosures are well suited for hip-hop, rap, and heavy hitting dance music. A bass reflex sub is kind of an all around performer that will work well for jazz, rock, or pretty much anything. Bandpass subs tend to be muddy for those types of music.
@djlobb8 жыл бұрын
Yamaha's bandpass subs are very good for a bandpass design. With input from Nexo's engineers and clever DSP the DXS subs are actually very musical sounding subs.
@djmannyleon92047 жыл бұрын
Actually, Bandpass subs are a huge NO NO for large venues! Because they are short-throw, meaning they only sound good up close. Once you walk away from them, they will lose SPL very quickly. Sure they sound awesome, but only in close range. In contrary, folded horns can be heard from far-away and don't lose their SPL when walking further away from them. They are very punchy sounding but don't sound as deep, hence the large and heavy cabinets. Regular front-loaded subs are just in the middle, but waste a lot of power.
@dickfantastic79087 жыл бұрын
Yup, folded horns are the big dogs. Something like the Orbit Shifter Pro, if you throw it's recommended 4000watts at it, you will crack the walls and shake the ground.

Improper testing method, different cabinets/, size so not quite apples to apples. That being said, you have to know your clientele and gig needs. Choose the one that best fulfills these requirementsQsc all day long for portability and durability. I'm guessing the Yamaha has more bass wave due to box size, so larger event may be a good fit for Yamaha. All in all both top notch under $1500. Otherwise go Danley , Dynacord or Funktion. Oh and the proper or best case scenario to test these is put them at their highest level and see what they do with the same input level.

I know this comment's a bit late, but speakers are built as part of a system; units that work together to achieve correct sound & balance. Not as (INDEPENDENT COMPONENTS) mixed & matched together. If you were to add a Yamaha DXR 15 (which is the top for that sub) & a QSC KW115 respectively, listen to that, then decide which system sounds better. I can guarantee the choice will become clear very quickly

The QSC doesn't have a built in crossover. So were you using a crossover? If not, you were running the QSC full range ;)
@djsoo8 жыл бұрын
neither does the yamaha - both QSC and Yamaha speakers rely on the tops having a high pass filter to cut off the lows.
@damienlobb858 жыл бұрын
The QSC has a Low-Pass for the sub itself, it just doesn't have a high pass, which only affects speakers plugged into the subs XLR-out. The Yamaha has a Low-pass and an adjustable High-pass (80hz, 100hz, 120hz)
@djsoo8 жыл бұрын
+Damien Lobb yea, point is that neither Yamaha nor qsc subs have an active crossover like JBL, RCF, or Mackie subs. So in order to pair with tops, you need to use tops that have a high pass filter built in - something that some tops don't have
@damienlobb858 жыл бұрын
+dj_soo The DXS18 has an active crossover, you can set the output HPF to 80Hz, 100Hz, 120Hz or Thru, the latter of which sends full range to tops.

Looking at the manual and it's not actually an active crossover - it's a low pass filter that you set to match wit the high pass filter on your tops.

Qsc wins, well controlled, big fat sound, handles lower frequencies better. The yamaha sounds a little bit to boomy for my taste but sound a little bit more punchy than the kw181. And hands down reliability goes to Qsc! Both are good options, but at two diffrent price points. The test could be more professional, but i mean it was just 2 guys having fun, donf bash them on how they did the test. If you are looking for more proffesional test or comparisons go look at other channels. But from experience id take the qsc any day and especially right now with the newer Qsc Ks118

Yamaha, nearly 10kg heavier .. too heavy Yamaha, no wheels Yamaha looks very dated DJ audio is getting lighter, leaner and looking fresher with the shift towards column array systems. Both subs are effective, whether bandpass or bass reflex. The guests won't know the difference I chose the QSC. Simply because It is SO MUCH easier for one person to manage and transport with the wheels incorporated. It's also lighter to carry when stairs are an obstacle. It doesn't look dated like the square boxy Yamaha. The QSC warranty is also a winner
