Had some training in the 80's with soldiers who never spent time in the field, never ate MRE's. Pulled out the cookie bar and went Oh yum. Pulled out the spoon (the short handled one at the time) and said what's this for. One guy says to help pry the cookie bar out tomorrow. We all died laughing.

Yay! MREs are always fun to watch people experiment with! Gonna pile up comments as I go. XD There's three companies that make the official ones, Ameriqual, Sopacko, and Wornick, and even if the menu is the same they pack them differently! It's pretty standard for soldiers to trade components in the meals, so good on you for swapping desserts. If the heater doesn't want to cooperate, add some salt to the water. That will usually cause the chemical reaction to fire up. Or just put the pouch into boiling water. For best results, make sure to knead the pouch well before opening, since the heaters work by contact. Only the side touching the heater is really going to get hot. So your best bet with the cheese spread would be to put it on the other side of the meal next to the heater. My tip for the coffee is to dump everything together all at once before adding the hot water. So your coffee, cream, and sugar all in the mug first. Less likely to get lumps that way. The "TFF" on the muffin top means Trans-Fat Free. For easy math in drink-mixing, 1 cup is 8oz. Your typical drinking glass is going to be 12oz, same with a bottle of water. Or a canteen cup. Most coffee shops 'burn' the coffee by letting it sit. The idea being that the increased bitterness will counter out the absurd sweetness of the various syrups that people put in their drinks. The wheat snack bread is pretty good with the cheeses. When you get the peanut butter, though, it can be a bit much. There used to be a chocolate hazelnut spread (nutella) in MREs but I think that's been dropped. If you can get the chance, definitely try to get your hands on a French ration. They're known as RCIR, Reheatable Combat Individual Ration. They're meant for 24 hours, so one will have plenty of food for both of you, and the food is incredibly good. French rations compromise on a having a shorter shelf life, but better quality of food inside. Thanks for an awesome video, and the shoutout to Steve was fun too! There's a bunch of really great channels, like gschultz9 and Kiwidude you can check out as well. :D

@@NatalieandTara depending on the menu that your MREs are from, you could get various spreads(two different peanut butters, various jams/jellies, and a few different cheese ones). Not every MRE comes with a hot/cold beverage bag so having a measuring cup with the graduated marks comes in handy. Getting the small bottle of Tobasco is always a win. To avoid the cheese coming out like that, just tear a smaller opening. As an Army vet, I get a kick out of watching civilians go through an entire MRE at one sitting. In the military world, not everything in a ration makes it out on a mission depending on your MOS (Military Occupational Specialty). An Infantryman taking out three days worth of rations won't have nine complete MREs because they have a lot to carry(their motto: ounces equals pounds, pounds equal pain). They are pretty good at field stripping (getting rid of unwanted items)rations to the point of being able to fit three rations into one MRE bag. That being said, the US version of the RCIR, the First Strike Ration is available but it's meant for use the first 24-72 hrs of having boots on the ground in any given theater of operations(I've known a few high speed individuals who have stretched one FSR out for three days). I could go on for days about this subject, especially the civilian MRE market, but I've rambled enough. 😇

It's a shame there's no time machine to compare mid 80's MRE's with the newer ones. Those are 5-star French cuisine compared to what they were when they first came out. Dehydrated pork or beef patty. Hot dogs. Most of it was disgusting. NO heaters, no hot sauce. If it was winter you had cold hot dogs, summer you got hot hot dogs. Our son cut all his teeth by gnawing on the crackers! Love you two! Even if you don't like Peanut M & M's, more for me! LOL
